Throughout the three texts we read, all three, different, authors developed a theme in their texts as “honor”. In Much Ado About Nothing, Claudio, a soldier, and Hero, a madden, quickly fall in love with each other; Don John, the “villain”, deceives everyone into thinking that Hero cheated on Claudio. In order for the city of Messina to stop talking about Hero’s reputation, Hero fakes her death. Claudio realizes Don John lied; and Hero and Claudio marry. The novel The Outsiders, is based on two gangs (the Greasers and the Socs), who have a rivalry. Bob, a Soc, tries to hurt Pony, a greaser. Johnny, a graser, sees Pony getting hurt and kills Bob. The two greasers have to run away so they don’t get caught by the cops. On the other hand, they …show more content…
Hinton, Tennyson, and Shakespeare, use honor in their texts, they also include Loyalty. Loyalty and Honor are different things; honor is a high respect of something and loyalty is a strong feeling of support. During The Outsiders, Pony is loyal to Johnny, because Pony went to the church with Johnny. Also during the rumble in the novel, Dally fights for Johnny. During the rumble Dally dies, when Dally pases away, he basically died for Johhny. Tennyson, author of “Charge of the Light Brigade”, shows loyalty in many ways during this poem. The captain of the british soldiers knew he messed up with his order. Since the british only had swords and horses, and the russians had bombs, the british knew they were going to lose. In stanza 2, it says “theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do or die”. That saying means the soldiers knew they were going to die, but they were going to die of courage, and be known as soldiers who died for their country/being loyal to their country. During Much Ado About Nothing Shakespeare includes a lot of loyalty. For example, Beatrice, Hero’s cousin, stayed loyal to Hero, because they are family. During Act 4 scene 1 everyone thought Hero was a stale because Claudio said she cheated on him, but Beatrice believed Hero, when she said she was not a cheater. Beatrice stayed by her side the whole time, and tried her best to prove Hero was not a stale. Another example of loyalty would also be when Beatrice tells …show more content…
Hinton use characters and tone to develop the theme, they also use plot. During The Outsiders in chapters 5-6 the church burns down. Since Pony runs in the church to save the kids, Johnny also follows because he doesn’t want Pony to get hurt. Johnny honors the act that Pony ran in to save children he didn’t even know. Also in chapter 9 Johnny dies. Instead of Johnny being known as a delinquent who killed a soc, he was known as a hero, because he saved kids from the church. This book, shows honor though the plot and the characters. Much Ado About Nothing has a very complex plot. Since it is a play plot does have an important role, but tone of voice and characterization has the most impact on the play. During Much Ado About Nothing, Hero is blamed for cheating on Claudio, which was false allegations. Hero has to follow the plan, of the Friar, that she is “dead” (not actually, it would be fake). When Hero “dies” Claudio realizes Hero was falsely accused, causing Hero to become “back alive”, which lets Hero and Claudio marry. The plot of Much Ado About Nothing further developed the theme of honor. Since it is a play the plot doesn’t develop the theme by itself. The tone of voice and the characters develop the theme, of honor, way more than the plot. “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, brings in the theme of honor through the plot because during the conflict in stanza 2, the british soldiers knew they were going to lose but they still
Another thing in common with the books is that in a fight between the gangs, someone is killed. In West Side Story, during the rumble, Bernardo kills Riff. Tony takes his revenge by killing Bernardo. He does this because Riff was like a brother to Tony. Similarly, in The Outsiders, Bob was drowning Ponyboy. To protect his friend from harm, Johnny kills Bob with his switchblade. Because of the situation the boys had put themselves into, they needed to protect themselves, and this was the only way they thought might work.
“And when I lived, I was your other wife, And when you loved, you were my other husband(Shakespeare 60).” In the beginning of the play it was overwhelming, steeped in love at first sight between Hero and Claudio, until Don John’s evil-manner took a role in ruining the love between them. And because of this a conflict developed between them, but was resolved when their vigorous love for one another overcame the conflict. In Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, Hero serves as the foil character of Claudio because of Hero’s dignified, well-mannered, eminent reputation is illuminated through Claudio’s insecure, accusing, and doubtful weakness; thereby, interminably influencing the conflict in the plot.
On example of this is on page 60, “...He handed us a gun and a roll of bills…” this shows that he is loyal because even though if he gets caught he would probably go to jail he gives Pony and Johnny money and a gun so that they can run away from the police after they killed Bob. Dally gave Pony a dry shirt and told them where to hide. My next example is on page 81, “I told him I didn't know, but he didn't believe me,” this shows that he is loyal because he kept where they are a secret because they did not want anyone to know where they are. He kept it from even his best friends. My last example is on page 154, “But I knew that is what he wanted...Dallas Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted,” this shows that he is loyal because the only thing that he ever loved was Johnny so when he died there was nothing left for Dally so he got himself killed by the police. Dally was very loyal to his
The Outsiders is a book about Greasers And Socs. The Greasers are the poor east side kids they would wear their hair long and greasy and they will dress in blue jeans, T-shirts, or wear they shirttails out and wear a leather jacket and tennis shoes or boots. The Socs are the rich west side kids that worn nice clothes, drove nice cars, and had all the pretty lady’s. They both was gangs in Oklahoma. The Socs they would jump Greasers, wreck houses, and throw beer blasts for kicks.
Honor is a trait few possess in the modern world. Cyrano de Bergerac, a play by Edmond Rostand set in France during the sixteen hundreds, discusses honor in it’s truest form. But honor is not simply a code or a way to describe a man, there are characteristics that make a honorable individual. The main character, Cyrano, lives what many in his city would call an honorable life. Rostand uses this character to explore what characteristics make a man of honor. Some of the prominent traits the author presents as honorable are possessing controlled wit, bravery on and off the battlefield, and the ability to love unceasingly.
William Shakespeare is known for his use of dramatic irony and complicated story lines. In Much Ado About Nothing, he also adds in the element of disguise to what the characters know, or what they think they know. There are multiple characters trying to ensnare others in different facades, whether it be for better or for worse. The deception and illusion in the play can either assist the characters or completely shatter the situation, but in both cases, Shakespeare advises us to infer about what we hear or see before we jump to conclusions.
When living sometimes we are faced with difficult decisions that affect our friendships. If you knew you were in a jam, what would you do? Who would you run to? Despite the greasers’ reputation as heartless young criminals, they live by a specific code of friendship and honour. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, there are many instances in which the gang members make selfless choices by putting the needs of others ahead of their own. Three examples are, when the gang has each other’s back, Johnny and Ponyboy’s friendship, and Dally risking his life for Johnny.
S.E Hinton’s realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the 1950’s. It’s hard for Ponyboy, the main character, to reserve his childhood innocence because he is in a gang, called the Greasers, and the Socs and the Greasers are always fighting. One lesson The Outsiders suggests is preserving childhood innocence. While some believe the strongest theme of The Outsiders is loyalty, I argue the strongest theme is preserving childhood innocence, as supported by S.E Hinton’s use of characterization, dialogue, and allegory. From the very beginning, the characterization shows how the Greasers have lost their innocence. S.E Hinton describes how Johnny looked like a “lost little dark puppy that’s been kicked around too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers,” (Hinton 11). This line shows how Johnny lost his innocence because of the way he looks
From looking at the two gangs, both the Greasers and the Socs. The book The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton is able to show that the Greasers were the true disgrace and a menace to society. The Greasers were able to show this from their looks, their behavior, and the choices that they make.
How is honour the driving force with the texts The Godfather and Romeo & Juliet?
With so many words making up the content of plays, it is difficult for one, single word to make much of an impact. However, the word ‘honor’ does just that in the play Titus Andronicus. Honor means different things to different people, and this is quite evident in the tragedy that is Titus Andronicus. The definition of honor has changed throughout the history of man. The character for which the play is named, Titus, puts his honor and the honor of Rome before anything else. In the play, honor is used as justification for wrongful actions. There are murders that happen in the name of honor. Honor is also lost by some and taken from others. Although small in size, the word honor plays a large role in Titus Andronicus.
With its entangled plots and eloquent use of words, Much Ado About Nothing is a story that has the ability to entertain the masses, both young and old. Shakespeare’s use of figurative language along with situation creates such vivid imagery that carries the drama from beginning to end. For example, when we look at Act 1 Scene 1 of the play, we are quickly introduced to the sharp tongued Beatrice as she verbally annihilates her unseen co-star Benedick.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Hinton’s novel “The Outsiders”, demonstrates how having both internal and external expectations impact the way you live and how you act on a day-to-day basis. In the text, the Socs and Greasers are put into roles with specific limitations, which impacted their lives accordingly. These standards for each group come from ideas relating to maintaining reputations. This could range from being the poor kids with turbulent, misfortunate lives to the wealthy kids who got to live a life of opportunity. In summation, the Greasers and the Socs dealt with conflicts that were related to living up to the expectations placed on them by the society they lived in and what they anticipated from
In Othello, the titular character is a visible minority who holds a high position in the army but falls victim to manipulation by his seemingly trustworthy ensign and friend. While the theme of jealousy remains the main reason for the eventual death of both Emilia and Desdemona, the preservation of honour and reputation also fuel the characters’ actions toward the women. Therefore, the men in the play act cruelly and unjustly in order to defend their honour. While the conflicts between the Othello and Iago seem to be due to jealousy, the play suggests that the men are scared of the women and their power to destroy their honour and reputation.
Most importantly, we can see how important honor is whenever Leonato and Claudio hear the rumor about Hero dihononing Claudio. During Shakespeare’s time a woman dishonoring or cheating on a man was just about the worst thing you could do. That is why Shakespeare makes such a big deal about how Claudio gets dishonored. By him showing Leonato and Claudio abusing Hero when the find out about the rumor, the reader can see how important honor really was especially to the men at that time. Another scene where you could see the importance of honor was when Beatrice asks Benedick to kill Claudio for publicly humiliating Hero. Claudio basically ruined Hero’s life by exposing her in front of everyone, so Beatrice wanted Claudio’s life to be ruined by him getting killed. Also, honor is shown through the use of dishonor with the events of the plot in Much Ado About Nothing. In each event of the plot they have to do with the theme of dishonor. The largest conflict and the climax of the plot revolves around the use of dishonor. By Shakespeare using dishonor in every aspect of the plot, he is easily able to develop the theme. The turning point of the story is actually when the rumor of Hero dishonoring Claudio goes around, and when this goes around every event from then on has to do with resolving the conflict of dishonor. Lastly, the use of honor can be seen as the theme with the
