How Cheating Can Be Stopped One student at a college decided it was a good idea to copy and paste his entire essay in order to attend a frat party. However, he was caught by his professor and was punished according to that schools honor code. An honor code is a series of rules that are put in place in which the students are trusted to follow and to uphold. If the codes does not change, students can find new ways around the rules to cheat and not receive punishment if they are caught. Philip Altbach, a scholar at Boston College, said, “’Plagiarism is more common now…It’s just easier to do’” (Source D). Cheating has become simpler with the new and updated computers and phones. In a matter of minutes a student can find the work and answers for their classes using the internet that is on their phones and laptops. At Harvard 125 students all cheated on an exam using their laptops and phones to cheat on an exam. (Source C). Lou Bloomfield, at U.Va, has a huge class and found out, “A few of his students had simply copied from earlier work. Others had lifted at least a third of their papers from someone else” (Source D). Without updating the honor code at the school nothing is stopping these kids from going online and stealing others work. These scholars believe they have found a way around the honor codes because it is not being addressed by the rules. By revising the codes, students will be discouraged to cheat or plagiarize on their work. Revising provides a way to prevent those sneaky students from thinking of ways around their honor codes. However, the students are the ones who understand the current problems. By revising an honor code with both teacher and student input, there is a higher chance that new rules would by accepted and followed. Research conducted by Professor Donald L. McCabe at Rutgers University shows that “…students at colleges with honor codes—typically student-enforced—cheat less than their counterparts elsewhere do” (Source C). By having fellow students working on the honor code, other students will less likely go against it. Mostly this is due to the fact that students do not want to get caught by their peers . Colleges have come to realize that, “T he success of the honor code, then, depends on the expectations that students have of their peers’ behavior…” (Source C) . The students are the ones who follow the honor code and they know what they expect from their fellow students . By having the students with those high expectations on that council, the honor code would be more successful. The rules that lie behind this regulation are becoming outdated and more students are finding themselves punished for disobeying it. The Honor Code system is the moral expectation of trusting students to confront and report their fellow peers when they see that he/she is not obligating the honor code policies. The Schools should eliminate all honor code policies. By eliminating the honor code policies the high schools and colleges will accept that the non-reporting of lying, cheating, and plagiarism is inevitable whether or not the students sign the honor codes. The schools will gain back the trust and respect of the students by changing the overall atmosphere. Not all schools have the abilities to prove these honor codes effective.
Part of the code says that if a student witnesses cheating or plagiarism they are to report it. In a survey, only 8% of students said they would report these actions (Source E). Honor codes are useful, but only in students are willing to help and report these dishonest actions. Another problem that Source D addresses is doubtful feelings that by signing a piece of paper it will change a cheaters ways. Every school, no matter its ranking, faces the possibility of plagiarism. As a result, honor codes have been implemented as a solution. By definition, these codes are established to ensure that each and every student develops and executes a sense of integrity. These codes could alter the environment of a school, whether it has more severe punishments than another. The integrity of these codes solely depends upon the actions and influences of the students. Schools, including my own, should maintain their honor code if it presents fair expectations and illustrates a positive way of developing stronger morality.

Plagiarism occurs by not citing a source correctly or by not putting the proper quotation marks on a quote that you borrow to state your point. Some students don’t even know what plagiarism is, and they do it using the technology that we have today. Therefore, Julie Rasicot states, “High schools and teachers should make clear what constitutes plagiarism, how to avoid it and what the consequences will be if students are caught.” If students are not informed about plagiarism, then they tend to use technology as an easy way to do an assignment, which prevents them from learning. An honor code is necessary in the school life. I believe it makes a difference in students; it provides a foundation for them. If students do not have an honor code, they will not know what is right from wrong. When students do something wrong they cannot be punished or corrected because they have no rules. Students are the way they are because of how they behave while growing up, so adding an honor code that students can follow should influence them greatly. Honor codes also makes students establish a sense of professionalism and can divide the students who deserve to get good grades and the kids who do not deserve to get good grades.

They not only make sure that the academic integrity of students is held to a high regard, they also help to build and maintain a more trustworthy environment. ...Almost every student nowadays can admit to cheating at some point in their educational career, but motives as to why they cheat vary and can’t be narrowed down to one reason. There are many excuses as to why all levels of students chose to cheat no matter how wrong or unexpected it is. Cheating is a large problem, but members of universities and schools can discourage it and try to prevent it as much as possible. Not only should it be frowned upon, but it also should be a priority to make it next to impossible to do. Advisers can reduce the temptation of cheating by significantly decreasing the amount of true and false and multiple choice questions on exams and quizzes. Also by understanding the students social and parental pressures in a person at that age’s life is important and contributes to decreasing the amount of students cheating in schools and universities.
