How many times have you cheated in school? Was it on one of your peer’s papers? Did you really deserve that A you got? I wish the answer to that first question was a no from everyone, but honesty most people have cheated in school at least one time. A lot of high schools, colleges and universities tend to install an honor code to prevent this. An honor code is a set of ideals that were placed to promote honor and integrity throughout students as well as spread awareness of the consequences of violating these rules. Codes that promote integrity are what everyone wants. One high school, Lawrence Academy, had a discussion of issuing an honor code within the school. Most concluded that “we need an environment where students and faculty could live in complete trust of one another” (Source B). The only way this school could have trust was through this system. Trust and integrity is needed throughout a school to strive and keep improving as a school and as a student. Trust shows confidence in one another and that they are reliable. The code would help push this trust by enforcing honesty throughout the school with thorough rules and consequences. Another incident of mistrust was at the University of Virginia, Professor Lou Bloomfield. He was concerned with plagiarism when a student confided in him that she had copied a paper. When he decided to look into more papers, more and more plagiarized papers continuously popped up (Source D). This shows that without a strict honor code, people will steal writing of other students. The rules that lie behind this regulation are becoming outdated and more students are finding themselves punished for disobeying it. From plagiarism to dishonesty, many high school teenagers cheat just to get a good grade in a class or they simply are bad at that particular subject. They cheat on tests, quizzes, and even on big projects. No matter the circumstance, if you are ever to be caught, you should be served with the toughest of consequences. You should not be trusted. You should have any second chances. After all, even if you don’t get caught for cheating, you are not learning anything the class has to offer.
Studies have shown that, “…many schools with academic honor codes allow students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control cheating…a more important factor seems to be the peer culture that develops on honor code campuses—a culture that makes most forms of serious cheating socially unacceptable among the majority of students” (Source F). By using peers to uphold the honor codes, students are embarrassed if they are caught cheating. Therefore, they are less likely to defy the honor code at their school. However, if they break the honor code they should be punished by the same students and teachers who revised the honor code. Honor codes will be revised and enforced differently. For example one school’s, “honor code is strictly enforced, and the enforcement is handled by an all-student court. Students convicted of lying or cheating can expect to receive punishments ranging from suspension to expulsion” (Source C). The Honor Code system is the moral expectation of trusting students to confront and report their fellow peers when they see that he/she is not obligating the honor code policies. The Schools should eliminate all honor code policies. By eliminating the honor code policies the high schools and colleges will accept that the non-reporting of lying, cheating, and plagiarism is inevitable whether or not the students sign the honor codes. The schools will gain back the trust and respect of the students by changing the overall atmosphere. Not all schools have the abilities to prove these honor codes effective.
Every culture in the world has its own unique set of values that they adhere to in life. The most important value to people is their honor. This endless pursuit of keeping honor can causes both positive and negative effects to a society. Also, if a student has cheated their whole way through high school, their life would be much more difficult. An honor code not only gives a school a better name, but it also shows that the kids that come out of the school are honest and hard workers. We need honest hard workers for several important jobs, such as a doctor, etc. If people were cheating and did not learn what they were supposed to know for this job, that can become very harmful. Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
Everyone has cheated on something at some point in their life, whether it is in a game, on a test, or in a relationship, everyone has done it. Cheating is anything that involves breaking a rule, or getting an unfair advantage. Schools are one of the most popular places people cheat. Many people down play cheating and use excuses like, “He shouldn’t have let me see his paper,” or, “I am just using my resources wisely.” But, what causes people to cheat? From a young age we are taught the differences between right and wrong, but as we get older the line between moral and immoral is often blurred. Academic cheating is a terrible offense because it is unethical, self-degrading, and can be detrimental to the learning environment.
