The Necklace
“What! You can’t mean it! That’s impossible!” (Maupassant 173)This quotation from the character, Loisel’s husband, shows the utter panic with a look into the inciting action. “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant is a short story which will teach the true meaning of honesty, is a brilliant read with an elaborate setting. It also carries out an intense truthful theme with extremely interesting characters.
The theme of the story, is to show honesty and be yourself and not someone that others expect you to be. Maupassant gives a very clear picture of this in his tale. In “The Necklace”, a poor couple are given a chance of a life time when a message arrives from Ministry of Education. This message asked the Losiel’s to “…. do them the honor of attending an evening reception at the Ministerial Mansion….” (170) Even with this rare occasion invite, Mme Loisel was very ungrateful as she had nothing to wear and throws the invitation to the ground. At this time, her husband decided to allow her to purchase a beautiful gown for this event. This still is not good enough for Mme. Loisel's she has no jewels to wear, and she make a selfish decision to borrow something that she feels is nearly impossible to replace. Loisel, for example. In the exposition, we learn of her snobby lifestyle, worn appearance, and no social class, however, she is a lady of charm and grace when she choses to be. Mme. Loisel was a woman of appreciation of the little things in life and “…grieved…feeling she had been born for all the little niceties and luxuries of living.” (169) Even with the help of a Brenton girl to do her daily house work, she still takes everything for granted.
