Homicide detectives go to the scene of the crime to talk with witnesses and to check for evidence. It takes hard work and dedication to become a homicide detective as it is not a job that you can just apply for- you have to earn it.
In order to become a homicide detective, you have to first begin as a police officer for at least 3 years- getting top marks for your work. The commanding officer also has to put in a request for you to join the homicide division, so prospective applicants would have to work extra hard in order to be chosen. Many people assume that what they see on TV, like CSI or Law and Order, is how it really is, but it is actually nothing like it. On TV, the police officers and detectives find evidence the fairly easy and are able to convict the criminal within days. In reality, suspects are not that easy to find. There are times where the criminal is never found. Some of these end up as cold cases, or unsolved murders.
However, just because a case isn’t solved does not mean that it is not being worked. Every year detectives solve anywhere between 60-70% of the cases, but only about 30-40% are actually from that calendar year.
Because homicides take place at all times of the day and night, homicide detectives need to be on call and prepared to leave at any time. Through forensics; a type of science which revolves around the solving of crimes, there has been an increase in undeniable evidence throughout the world. Regardless of the evidence, though, there are some crimes which have remained unsolved. The case of the Zodiac Killer is one of the most famous of these.
Detective fiction always ends with a successful resolution because law and order is restored. Once moral and social order is restored this impacts the reader as they are still trying to figure out how it happened and how did Holmes solve the crime. The reader also feels relieved when a crime is solved especially if it was Victorian readers.

When choosing an occupation, one has hundreds of different opportunities that are available. Throughout childhood, every person has had some form of a dream job they wanted to reach. Some people wanted to be astronauts, others firefighters, and yet some wanted to be police officers. The lifestyle that is portrayed of a police officer on the television looks glamourous and action packed, with high speed chases all the time and frequent doughnut stops. But this is not necessarily the reality of the situation.
Cold cases are the hardest and most frustrating cases to solve due to lack of evidence, witnesses and the time that has passed. Another reason why cases go cold is because there are more cases coming in as the number of crimes goes up, which makes less time for investigators to work on each case. When cases go cold there is no closure for the family of the victim or victims, and a criminal is still on the street potentially repeating the offense that he or she got away with.

Crime scene investigators collect evidence and pass it to a forensic scientist who uses the items in numerous ways to help catch criminals. Forensic scientists must also record the evidence and any tests run on it in detail to prove the truth in court. A forensic scientist also has to be able to present his or her physical evidence verbally in court, so a strong communication background is important. There are several things that CSI shows get wrong. A few of them are that blood doesn’t always splatter everywhere whenever someone is hurt or killed. When you are watching the CSI television shows, they are always able to find some kind of amount of splatter blood at the crime scenes. Also, blood doesn’t glow under the ultraviolet light, but it does turn dark black. You can make blood glow to try to see it, by using a chemical call luminol. In the shows, they make it seem like the crime investigators are always doing something exciting. In reality, they spend a lot of time in an office. Imagine pulling into your driveway and seeing your neighbor’s house surrounded by police, flashing lights, and caution tape with bodies covered in white sheet on the lawn. It was a drive by shooting. Next, a van pulls up and a Criminal Investigator steps out and starts assessing the crime scene. She begins taking photos, marking shell casings, packaging evidence, documenting tire treads on the pavement and inspecting and collecting DNA evidence from the bodies. Criminal Investigators are highly trained college graduates that are a vital part of bringing criminals to justice.
Further research shows that, there are no specific education requirements to be in the profession. It wouldn’t hurt to have a criminal justice degree, but by no means is it a requirement. Because there are so many niches in the industry and the industry changes so frequently, it’s critical to get on-the-job learning by being a practitioner in the business.
Being a police officer sounds like a good job to have for anyone who wants to do good things for their community. To begin, the daily routine as an officer is always changing; it does so because the central goal of law enforcement is to serve and protect people and their property in addition to keeping the public as safe as possible. Also, a typical day of a police is not that of a normal occupation. There are also requirements that need to be met in order to an officer of the law.

Although these requirements may vary slightly from state to state they are pretty basic and not to difficult to meet. First an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or at least a permanent resident alien who has applied for citizenship. The next requirement seeks that an applicant be 21 years old by his academy graduation date. Agencies also have an education requirement, which can vary from department to department. Some departments will accept an officer with a high school degree or at least a GED; while police departments require some form of a college education whether that be a bachelors degree or a minimum number of college credits. Agencies also ask that the applicant has a valid drivers license and there is a minimum fitness requirement to ensure that an applicant will be able to keep up with any obstacle that he or she may face out on the field.
