The life of a homicide detective using step by step techniques
In the United States homicide is a very important and touchy subject. What is homicide? Homicide is when someone decides to take the life of another, regardless of their intentions or other details surrounding the incident (Reuters, 2017). Surprisingly, poverty often links itself with homicide, giving it a positive correlation (Bailey, 1984). It is very apparent to know that not all homicides are crimes; however, they all involve the killing of a human being. The main three types of homicides are murder, manslaughter, and legal homicides.
A first-degree murder is a more serious type of homicide that is premeditated and intentional. Manslaughter is under murder but there may not

The person who initially pronounced the individual dead should tell the detective the time, date, and location of the body at the time of determination (National Justice of Institute, 2011). Once the detective has officially confirmed the death, the medicolegal jurisdiction needs to be established (Kirwan, 1952). After determining all of that, the investigator would need to conduct a scene walk-through to prevent contamination of any evidence. While communicating with other detectives, an entry and exit point should be talked about to help with contamination. Conducting a walk-through would give the investigator an overview of the entire scene. The determination of a search warrant is important in cases where someone else is still living in the home (Geberth, …show more content…
It is very important that everything is documented for all persons that have had any contact with the scene. By having everything documented, it helps prove that there was no planting and contamination, theft, and tampering with the evidence (National Institute of Justice, 2011). After doing an initial walk-through and establishing a chain of custody, it is very important for the detective to take photos of the entire scene (Centrex, 2006). The importance of taking a photograph is to have a visual form of documentation of what happened. The photo needs to be taken from various angles to give different perspectives and to help with additional evidence. Some of the photos would need to include scales so that it can be as specific as possible. If evidence has been moved prior to taking any photographs, it is essential that it is documented. According to the National Institute of Justice (2011), “The body of other evidence should not be reintroduced into the scene in order to take photographs.” Not only should there be photographs of the scene, but a written documentation is important as well. Especially with each photograph taken, there would need to be an adequate description of each picture (Lothridge, 2013). The written portion is also to describe some of the evidence and its relationship to the victim. Anything that looks weird or out of the ordinary would need to be documented including; lights,
These forms of murder are some of the worst kinds and will ultimately lead to your death or your life in prison. All litigants will have to appear in front of a court. The final decision could be acquitted, which means the defendant would be considered not guilty. 1st degree murder is murder with malice aforethought. This crime can be classified as manslaughter and murder as well. The first type of homicide is "first degree murder." First-degree murder is premeditated and planned. Premeditated is the mens-rea of the crime, or the vital intent to commit the crime. "Premeditated" means purposely or knowingly thus “lying in wait for the victim”. The intent of first-degree murder is that murders must have the specific intent to end another’s life. Investigators using the practice of criminal profiling follows a process throughout the investigation. This commences with an evaluation of the malefaction scene and the malefactor act or acts itself, then an evaluation of the specifics of the malefaction scene/s. An analysis of the victim and preliminary police reports are then conducted before an examination of the autopsy report. Ending with developing a profile with offender characteristics, suggesting possible suspects utilizing the profile constructed and last possible apprehension of the suspect ("What Is Criminal Profiling And Why It Is Important | Twisted Minds - a website about serial killers", 2017).
What drives a person past insanity? What drives an individual to feel no remorse, but rather a psychological relief in murderous acts? Consider all the different types of people on Earth as well as the lifestyles and situations these people are raised up in. As much as it’s desired to think the world is filled with people who carry no such thing as a bad bone in their bodies, that thought process is simple deception. The fact is that psychopaths and sociopaths hide among others in everyday environments - neighbors, teachers, family members, doctors, friends, or even the local mailman. Psychopaths are declared as people who suffer from a mental disorder causing aggression and abnormal behaviors such as their “lack of
Many states today categorize murder into two degrees: first and second, but others have even more degrees based upon motive, intent, or time. Although England had established a set of criteria for the definition of degrees of murder, the Pennsylvania Court in the Act of Assembly of 1794 stated, “All murder which shall be perpetrated by means of poison, or by lying in wait, or by any other kind of wilful, deliberate or premeditated killing or which shall be committed in the perpetration or attempt to perpetrate any arson, rape, robbery or burglary, shall be deemed murder in the first degree; and all other kinds of murder, shall be murder in the second degree.” (Loewy, 2009, p. 20). By defining first degree murder as arson, rape, robbery, or burglary only these offenses would be punishable under the penalty of death. Second degree would not be punishable by death and only carry with it a prison sentence.

Collecting evidence from a crime scene is a crucial aspect of solving crimes. Before evidence can be seized, there must first be a court order approving the search of the crime scene and the seizure of the evidence found at the scene. Standard protocol for officers is for them to always use latex gloves, avoid plastic bags, double wrap small objects, package each object separately, and to collect as much evidence as possible. It is better to have too much evidence than to not have enough. There are countless amounts of evidence that can be found at a crime scene.

Brenna Courtemanche Professor Crombie ENC 1102 4 April 2014 The Mind of Serial Killers There is no specific manual or "how to" book to depict what a serial killer would potentially act or look like. It would be comforting if real-life serial killers were like those in the movies. If they were obviously masked like Jason on Friday the 13th, we would be aware whenever they approached. If they were introverted loners like Psycho's Norman Bates, they could not trick us so easily into their deviant plan.
When there is a criminal case, are a set of guidelines a criminal investigator should follow when conducting a preliminary inquiry. These guidelines consist of arriving to a crime scene in a timely manner just in case the suspect may still be at or near the scene (Hess, K.M & Orthmann, C.H., 2013). They will need to take care of any injured person or people that may need emergency care. Check to see if there are any witness seen what had happen. Make sure the crime scene is safe and secured. Once the crime scene became secured that will be the time to start questioning the victims, witness and or the suspects. This would also be the time for some officers to conduct a neighborhood canvass (Hess, K.M & Orthmann, C.H., 2013).
