The Homework War There is a war going on that many people do not know about. The homework supporters and the homework abolishers have been battling in the school system for many years. The focus of this battle is whether or not homework is needed. Although many feel that homework takes up too much time, research proves that homework improves life skills and increases learning outside of the classroom. Opponents argue that homework is time consuming. Students might not have enough time to participate in activities after school if teachers routinely assign a lot of homework. The time spent doing homework can cut into the time that students are able to be active (“List of 10 Big Pros and Cons”). If students decide to participate in activities, it can be hard to balance finishing homework and doing well in those activities. When balancing the two things becomes difficult, stress can become a huge factor. If students want to do well in both academics and extracurriculars, they may want to make sure everything is done correctly, and this can take a long time to achieve. Time management is extremely important, especially in the workplace. If students do not learn how to manage their time before entering a career, “they will not be adapted to the heavy workload and deadlines set by their bosses” (“The Benefits of”). Self discipline is also taught through homework. Teachers assign homework because “homework teaches students how to work independently” (“List of 10 Big Pros and Cons”). In a work setting, employers do not micromanage their employees the same way that teachers micromanage their students; students need to learn self discipline and independence in order to be successful in the future. As a result, the time management and discipline learned through homework will benefit the students when they become
Homework is not necessary or beneficial to middle school students for three specific reasons: 1) it uses up time that should be spent with family, helping the community, playing sports, or just being a kid; 2) homework does not make or break a student's performance in school; 3) even though it is debatable that homework can improve academic achievement,
Many people often say that students, teachers, and parents, think homework should be banned, but multiple people disagree. This heated topic has been debated for many years. Some parents and teachers think students have too much. However, some believe their students receive too little. Few schools already have banned homework, but the majority of schools don’t. Some people agree with having ten minutes multiplied by the grade level of the student. According to Marzano and Pickering (2007) in an article titled the Case for and Against Homework, homework can be useful and very insurmountable when employed effectively. “Three import issues are the appropriate use of homework at various grade levels; the optimum amount of time students should spend on homework; and the most effective forms of parent involvement” (Pg. 76).
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
Another reason students should receive less homework is because too much homework can cause students to have severe stress, anxiety, and depression. “There’s an inherent quality to homework that evokes a certain amount of stress, and that can be good, because it pushes us to learn. But for some children, the anxiety is so pronounced it basically freezes them” (Bailey). Homework does help students learn, but at what cost? If students are always worried over their homework, the positive effects become null and void. Teachers expect too much from their students. The expectation that the student's homework must be perfect causes even more anxiety in the student (Bailey). Homework can also c...

Homework all around the world causes stress and problems to all students, know matter the lifestyles they live. Homework in the long run is just bad for all students. Most students are busy and listening to their school about how students should join an after school activity. “We recommend to students to join an after school activity, it is the best for any student.” So we followed what they said and we joined, but not knowing it would put so much stress on
...supporters say. Homework is also important because there are many types of assignments that cannot be easily completed during the school day, proponents contend. Writing an essay and conducting a science experiment, for example, are both extremely beneficial ways for students to gain a more total understanding of a certain subject, proponents say, but neither assignment is easily completed during classroom hours. Such assignments must be completed at home to be effective, supporters argue. (“Update: Homework”)

During sports, students have practices and games that can last for hours at a time. Too much homework can be very time consuming. They try to juggle between these two and getting both tasks done at the same time is troubling for most students. Too much homework also causes students to stay in their room, and be less sociable with their family. “According to CNN.com, children who spend more time with their family by eating dinner together are less likely to get depressed, among numerous other things” (Hammer). Alfie Kohn, author of The Homework Myth, is an outspoken critic of at-home assignments. He says, “Homework is frequently the source of frustration, exhaustion, family conflicts and a lack of time for kids to pursue other
View on High School Homework There has been controversy about whether or not students should be required to do homework ever since the 1950’s because some think it doesn’t help students. Although critics say that homework does not directly affect academic scores, teachers should still be assigning homework because it teaches students key skills for their future. Many valuable skills are enforced and taught from doing homework, especially at a high school level. Skills taught from doing homework are not just beneficial for four years of high school, but for the rest of a young person’s life.
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
