To begin, the first reason why schools should not have homework is because research says otherwise. On the other side of the debate, people would argue that homework helps get higher test scores, but that is not always accurate. Jeffrey Brosco, who is a professor of pediatrics and associate director of the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine who studies the connection between increased academic demands of children and rising rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, states “There's not a whole lot of research that shows that practicing what you learned for homework is helpful” (Taketa, np). On the other side of the debate, people would argue that homework does not take too much time, but that is not always accurate. According to Ms. Velasco and a group of parents battled with their school two years ago over growing levels of after-school work, states, "We were up until 9 and 10 at night studying with third-graders" (Llana, np). This proves that because of homework third-graders are staying up late at night trying to get it done. Miller Llana, states, “In fact, data from the OECD show that Spanish 15-year-olds have 6.5 hours per week of homework versus the average of almost 5 hours for 38 countries” (Llana, np). This is important because it just shows that students are having hours and hours of homework each week. And so that means they are having close to an hour or more each day. According to Greg Toppo, “An hour of homework each night adds another class period to the school day” (Toppo, np). This is important because it shows that students are feeling like they are having another period of the day. Toppo, states, “17-year-olds who spent more than two hours a night on homework” (Toppo, np). This proves that students are having hours of homework each night.
