Homework has been an everyday affair for teens throughout America for as long as most can remember. When a teen goes to school they expect to go home with hours of work to be completed at home. While homework may seem harmless, it can cause catastrophic amounts of stress on teenagers and can take away time needed to develop nonacademic skills. The negative effects of a overload of homework is enough to think about regulating how much homework can be allocated to students in a night. The impact that homework has on teenagers emotional and physical health is enough to make people wonder if teens are being pushed too far. Emotional effects include stress, a lack of balance in life, and isolation from society. The National Education Society recommends no more than 10 minutes of homework per grade level. However, it is apparent that most children are given more than this recommended amount a night. Going over this limit just further escalates the amount of stress on students. When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Instead, teachers lecture from beginning to end. This gives no time for students to get the help they need when can’t come in any other time. The rationale has changed in America that doing more, always means doing better. This, however, can be the downfall to anything. In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Students usually spend at least six hours at school. This does not include how much time it takes to complete their homework of their extracurricular activities. Should students not get a break from all the work? Adolescents are supposed to spend their time with their friends and family but instead, they spend it doing work. By the time the students get to sixth period, they will have homework that will take about four hours to complete.
