A Substantial Decision Education is a key player in today’s society. Without it, having a successful future is improbable. Thus, the choice between sending children to a public school verses homeschooling is one that should not be made lightly. The popularity of homeschooling is growing, it is estimated that there are 1.73 to 2.35 million home educated students in the United States (Ray). Why is homeschooling the better option? Educating children at home has many distinct advantages: environment, academic performance, cost, strong ties between family members and social aspects. Another great advantage of choosing to homeschool is controlling the environment in which the child is being exposed to. Children being taught at home can feel safe and comfortable in an environment in which they are familiar (“Public School vs. Homeschool”). When being taught from home children are more apt to focus and study due to less distractions (“Public School vs. Homeschool”). Home educated children are not prone to peer pressure like their public school …show more content…
Some may be surprised to hear that homeschooling is actually cheaper than public schools. Parents of home educated children tend to only buy supplies that are needed, unlike public schools whose budgets are often spent on unnecessary items (Cost of Homeschooling vs Public School”). Other expenses public school parents must cover is the cost of school supplies, new clothing, technology (ex. Calculator), class fees, lunch money, field trips and extracurricular activities. All these items can be very costly and they add up to be more than what homeschooling parents pay (“Cost of Homeschooling vs Public School”). The cost the government pays for a single child in the public school system is over $10,000 a year, while parents who home educate spend less than $1,000 per year for all their children (“Cost of Homeschooling vs Public
Parents that choose to home school their children should be willing to spend more money than parents who send their children to public schools. “A recent study by economics professor Clive Belfield estimates the annual cost of homeschooling at $2500 for one child, and slightly less for each subsequent child”(Braun). It can be a major expense for families who are struggling to balance their budget. Not to mention if the child does not understand the subject after taught numerous, a tutor is required, which means more money have to be
Home schooling provides a different look on today’s educational system. Although I would support that every American child should receive at least two years of public school before graduating from high school. Homeschooling is becoming more popular every day, with a growth rate of 7 to 15 percent per year according to Vicki Bentley HSLDA Toddlers to Tweens Coordinator. There are many aspects of homeschooling that someone should consider, financial commitment, social interaction, physical exercise, the commitment parents have, and how it affects the student going to college. I personally have been on both sides of this issue. I have been homeschooled and I have been to public school. Student should have
As one of the fastest growing trends in modern education and with more members than ever before, it is no wonder that homeschooling has received recent media coverage (Swartout-Corbeil; Saba and Gattis 1, National Household Education Surveys Program 1). However, many people are unsure about the reality of homeschooling (Saba and Gattis XI). Some of its critics show concerns over its claimed negative effects on a child’s ability to socialize with other children, while some were doubtful of its academic effectiveness (Saba and Gattis 5; Pitman). On the other hand, homeschoolers and their supporters say that it offers greater academic benefits than conventional schooling, and does not deprive a child socially either (Saba and Gattis 2; Dorian and Tyler 46). But amidst all this talk, what really are the effects of homeschooling on a child, on both the academic and social levels?
An estimated 4 million children are currently home schooled with a 15-20% yearly growth rate. According to a California study by researcher Dr. Brian [D.] Ray, 92 percent of school superintendents believe that home learners are emotionally unstable, deprived of proper social development and too judgmental of the world around them. The latest claim against home schooling suggests that home schoolers are potential child abusers. Mr. Ron Barnard, a Holly High School teacher says that he would prefer public schooling for his children because of the peer socialization, extra curricular, and mandated curriculum. Public schooling is more efficient in educating our youth than traditional home schooling.
Education is an amazing opportunity, no matter how one receives it. Since the beginning of the public-school system, homeschooling had become a dwindling sight, until the last 20 years or so. The stigma surrounding homeschooling is one that paints parents as intolerant and children as awkward and anti-social. Many are skeptic about homeschooling and want their children to experience life outside of the home through public or private school. While this is completely understandable, could homeschooling offer a better education and more future success than public schooling? Homeschooling produces better test scores and is more academically effective than public schooling.

Money and time contribute to nearly everything that is accomplished in life, so in homeschooling, they play the biggest role in order to have a successful outcome. Laura Grace Weldon argues how many parents assume homeschooling will drain their wallets without even considering the resources they have around them. She includes some of the places she took her children to learn from such as museums, public libraries, colleges and cultural centers as well as the people who they spent time with such as engineers, entrepreneurs, organic farmers and many more. Weldon includes how people seem honored when asked to share a little of what they know. Not to mention most of the activities that they did were basically free.
In today’s American society, quality education is important for one to succeed. Without proper education, a person will find it extremely difficult to apply for college, a job, or to pursue his or her dream. Typically when Americans think of education, public education is the first to come to mind. Public education has been around for centuries and is provided to most children throughout the United States. Due to this fact, public education has been the go to education source for years. Though, this trend is slowly changing with many parents deciding to home school their children instead. Many factors are the cause for this issue, but the common arguments arise from a certain few. For students, public school provides many opportunities ranging from social connections, school sports, and the exposure to teachers who are experts in their fields. But homeschooling is often superior because it offers additional time for students to participate in various extracurricular activities and community service, allows for more individual attention, personal character development, and it offers less exposure to discrimination that is received in the public school environment.
As the population in public schools increase, the problems in these schools are also on the rise. These changes are leasing to the way parents are schooling their children. Many parents are leaning towards homeschooling as a solution to this problem. This increase in homeschooling can be directly related to an increase in school violence, the offering of a lack luster curriculum, and lack of student teacher interaction.
All children in America have the right to a quality education. Most students receive that education through conventional means, going to a public or private school. There is another option for today's children, home schooling. Home schooling is a controversial issue. While it does have its benefits, some people believe it has too many downfalls to be an effective method of education. In this paper, topics such as academic impact, social impact, and parental opinions of home schooling will be discussed.
One of the first factors a parent looks at when deciding between home school and public school enrollment is the cost difference between the two. If the parents decide to home school it’s less expensive. Parents only have to by books and other learning related materials; not having to worry about extra expenses that their child may not need. Although, if the child was sent to public school, payment for books are not required. Book are given to students for free; although, school supplies, gym clothes, field trips, and other extra-curricular activities will cost money.
“Is getting a good education important to you?” Most people when asked this question would answer, “Yes.” This is because it teaches us valuable life skills and prepares us to communicate and engage with others in the world. Education has taken on many forms over the years, and one of the more successful components of education has been homeschooling. Once considered a criminal act of defiance, homeschooling is now legally an option in all fifty states for parents to consider, and it has a substantial
Today, many parents are homeschooling their children. A U.S. Department of Education’s report shows that approximately 1.5 million children were being homeschooled in 2007 (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). This is almost 3 percent of all school age children (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). A private researcher, the National Home Education Research Institute, estimates 2.5 million children were being homeschooled in the 2007 – 2008 academic years (Lips & Feinberg, 2008). By either count, homeschooling is growing exponentially.
Take the option of homeschooling benefits families in different ways, and also the reasons may be because of where they live. Crime is a reality in many Latin American countries. Home schooling in this case can give parents peace of mind of knowing that their children are safe .
Homeschooling is a rising alternative in children’s education. As with any other major movement there have been doubts and debates as well as support and promotion for this educational approach. Homeschooling was once the norm in society before there was a public school system. But the parents involved in homeschooling feel very strongly about the positive outcomes that it has brought about in the lives and success of their children. It has once again surfaced and become popular but there are several people who question the possible negative effects this option creates.
