In the movie October Sky produced by Larry Franco, Homer Hickam faces many sacrifices to pursue his dream. Homer lives in a small town, he spends his time with his friends Roy Lee, Odell and a later friend, Quinton. Homer lives in a home where he’s expected to work in the coal mining industry after his dad, but he has bigger plans, as big as rocket science, literally. Homer was inspired by mrs. Reiley his science teacher to build a rocket with his friends while making big choices along the way. The mining industry is a very dangerous/hard working job. Homers father expected him to do his job and make him proud, meanwhile homer had other plans. One day at the dinner table homer expressed his feelings with saying, “I want to build a rocket.” his family reacted by laughing at him, which made him determined to accomplish this task, and this leads us to his next sacrifice. Homer had a pretty good social life, but when he was determined to build a rocket he was willing to sacrifice anything. He decides to risk his whole social career to walk up to Quinton, the biggest nerd in school, to ask him for help. Homer’s friends watched him in awe after they had just warned him what a dumb idea this would be, but Homer didn’t care. The boys got together after school everyday, they finally got the materials they needed and along came another problem.
They needed access to weld their rocket together so homer asked one of the workers to weld together his rocket, even though this would risk his job. The worker accepted and the boys got to work with many trial & errors, everytime making a small change. The rocket advanced a lot over the course of many attempts. Then one long awaited day the boys were ready to launch again, “10..9..8..7..6..5..4..3..2..1” Success! Their rocket made it! Everyone was cheering especially their biggest fan, mrs. reiley. This sparked a big future for them, with even more
problems. With their rocket being a success, the boys were invited to the national science fair but their school could only afford to send one boy, and off homer went. Homer was very happy that he made it to the science fair, but a disaster struck. Someone stole the rocket! Homer panicked and called his mother, and explained that everything he had, all the work, was gone. His mother had a plan, she told homer’s father and convinced this unsupportive man to help his son in need. Homer’s father drove to him and brought him the things he needed. Homer was grateful. This was followed by homer’s success in the science fair, he won! In this story homer knew what he wanted to do, he was very persistent in achieving his goal and knew the risks he needed to take to do what he wanted to. Throughout his young life, Joe shows hard work, “Joe feasted on salmon that night, alone in the house. Then he set about turning the poaching of salmon into a business. Each Saturday afternoon Joe hiked the three miles into town with one or more enormous salmon sung of his shoulder,” (61). When fishing you need to patient, Joe’s hard work in fishing allows him to persevere his hunger situation as well as getting cash by selling the fish. Joe hard work allows him to overcome his obstacle of hunger and survival by taking the time to catch the fish, carry the fish three miles into town every Saturday by himself. Joe shows hard work in everything he does, he bettered his education by going Seattle for a year. Living with his brother Fred and Thula’s twin sister for schooling at Roosevelt High School. Joe worked hard to earn good grades so he could surmount the odds of attending a four year college. Joe received a card from the head crew coach at the University of Washington. This was Joe’s ticket into college, all his hard work from physical labor and grades constructed him to go against the odds of being hopeless to attending college. Later in the fall, he attended the University Washington and worked hard to stay in shape and make the row team. He was announced first-boat third seat. Bricklayer’s Boy is a story about a father and son and their working lives. The Narrator, or son, grew up in a blue-collared household, with a father that was a bricklayer. By his early 20’s, his father already had a wife, a career, two sons and a house. His father was the son of an immigrant, and believed in working hard so that his sons could get white-collared jobs and have an easier life. The narrator had other ideas though, and decided to become a newspaper reporter. His father didn’t understand this decision because he expected him to make as much money as possible. When the narrator was offered his first job at a daily paper in Columbus, Ohio, his father said, “Why can’t you get a good job that pays something, like in advertising in the city, and write on the side?” “Advertising is lying,” the narrator replied, “ I wanna tell the truth.” His dad continued to push advertising in the weeks before he moved, until one night he came home with tape and bubble wrap and helped him pack to move.
For years, the Soviets led the space race, hoisting larger payloads than the U.S., including the first animal and man in space. All of this occurred during one of the most distrustful and competitive periods of the Cold War. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 shook the United States to its roots. October Sky captures Homer's view of the launch of Sputnik and how one kid will overcome all adversities to achieve his dreams, even if he has to convince his dad that he can become more than a coal miner. We will also focus in on how amazed Homer is on rocket launches, character development and how this movie departed from its purpose by adding an unnecessary plot development.

John wanted to go to space again same as Bob. So they had a plan to go to space again. They fixed their spaceship’s engines, windows and they filled the petrol tank with fuel. They also cleaned the spaceship and it looked like new. Bob made an experiment to make the powerful engine even more powerful. John added a massive booster which is seven tons. He also adds a jet engine which is faster than the other one. The two boys helped each other to make their spaceship better.

Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens on November 30th, 1885. It was during this period of history that Halley’s Comet was visible to Earth (Upton, 2013). Why that in itself may not be that remarkable, what does make it interesting as it pertains to Mark Twain is when it was visible again. Halley’s Comet returned to Earth about 75 years later (Upton, 2013). It was during its return on April 10th, 1885 that Mark Twain passed away. In fact, Twain hoped to die during the comet’s return. Twain stated, “I came in with Halley’s Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don’t go out with Halley’s Comet. The Almighty has said, no doubt: ‘Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together (Upton, 2013). While this is at the very least an interesting fact about Mark Twain, his literary works are what he is famous for.
It was going to be the most serious journey ever. One cold weekend in fall the three best friends decided to go on a journey. There was Nick the smartest person known to live at West Point middle school. The most cocky kid in school AJ he 's the one you want on your team if u want to win and trust me if he doesn 't win you want to stay away from him. On his grandfather's deathbed, his grandfather told his father to "keep up the good fight". "Our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days", "live with your head in the lions mouth". His parents tell him to forget what his grandfather said. This really gets to him; he does not know what to do. His grandfather sees life differently then he and his parents do. He does not understand his grandfather's words. He thinks his grandfather's words are a curse. When the boat was initially found by the girls the boys didn’t see it at first, after they find it they become closer friends and this newfound friendship takes the teenagers on an adventure. They not only find a boat and fix it but they also use this boat to guide them into a new territory with the opposite sex. This boat gives them the freedom to do that.

Harry Stamper, a deep earth driller is hard at work on his oil rig in the middle of the China Sea.
