As everything advances, so do humans. However, there are problems that get left behind in its current state. Homelessness is a problem in my community I would like to see improvement in. the homeless population unfortunately is growing due to many reasons like high rent, loss of jobs and many other personal problems. Though many people complain about this problem, minimal action is taken. As I grow older and find my place in this community, I would like to help contribute to the solution of this problem. Architecture and Construction is a field I have found interest in since joining a Intro to Architecture and Construction class this year. I never thought I would like architecture but it enabled me to use my creativity and used skills from my favorite subjects like math, technology, and physics/science. In …show more content…
Following my passion, I want to design mini houses to decrease the homeless population. Even though there are shelters for the homeless, it is very inconvenient that people have to check in and out everyday. One idea I have is to teach the homeless about architecture and construction and provide them with materials to build their own home. Designing a system that will work properly will take some time and more development but my ideal goal is to help homeless people to get back on their feet and create more hope in their lives. To help the homeless get back in the system of earning money to pay for expenses, attending the classes could be a way for them to earn money to “buy” the provided materials for their home. This experience would create the same feeling of accomplishment I felt when I built my first stool. It would also give them the confidence to face all the challenges life continues to throw at them and help them live a more successful
One action I am taking towards this pathway of service is applying my academic knowledge. For instance, most of us forget to realize the privilege of sleeping. For most of these homeless women, their “bed” consists of cardboard and for some urine soaked cardboard. Unfortunately, these variables alter their sleeping patterns and quality because of their circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are the body’s internal clock that is responsible for a person’s sleeping patterns. When a person’s circadian rhythm is disrupted it can cause grogginess and an untimely melatonin release. Homeless people do not have the access to a private room to sleep in; instead, they are subject to sound and light pollution throughout the night. I believe when considering why homeless are not perusing a job, it is important to consider that some their lack of motivation is caused from poor sleeping. Eventually, I would like to study how to improve quality of sleep for those living on the street because it is a short-term
The subject of the final paper will be concentrating on the homeless people in America, and how we, as American citizens can become a voice and reduce the number of people living in the streets, cars, or wherever they can find shelter for the night. This journal will look at the subject and the path I will need follow to accomplish the task.
As you’ve probably noticed, I have a very dry sense of humor and yesterday it was extra dry for some mysterious reason ;-)
The National Coalition for the Homeless (2006) is the most effective strategy as it seeks to address the problem of homelessness through various means, including volunteer work, advocacy efforts, and contributions. Firstly, the strategy requires people to volunteer their time to work directly with the victims of homelessness in the city to help them meet their immediate needs. People can volunteer their time to work with children in various programs, share hobbies, and help build houses and shelters among others (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2011). This is extremely important and can help victims of homelessness to acquire some of the basic needs they lack.
The homeless population is growing in America. There are more and more Americans living in boxes, sleeping on park benches and panhandling on the streets each day. These people tend to make us, the non-homeless, feel uncomfortable and unsafe. They are also placing increasing stress on the nation's economy. In short, the homeless are a burden on the rest of society. There needs to be action taken against them. "I shall now humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection (Swift.)" I propose that all of the homeless be relocated to foreign third world countries. They can then be hired in American factories producing shoes, automobiles and other various goods at less than one dollar per hour.
Homelessness is a vast predicament in America and around the world. It is severely overlooked as people don’t really think of homelessness as real world problem. However, there have been ways that people have tried to fix the problem. They have come up with homeless shelters, emergency shelters, food banks and soup kitchens. These solutions have limitations though, which will hopefully come to an end.
I heard a blood-curdling scream and I jumped. I felt silent tears running down my heavily scarred face, but they weren’t out of sadness. Mostly. They were a mixture of pain and fear. I ran into the eerie, blood-splattered room and screamed as I felt cold fingers grab my neck. Before that night, I didn’t believe in the paranormal. Now I sure as heck do. I had been chased out of my house after a fight with my step-parents because I wasn’t doing well in school (I had dyslexia), and I had taken shelter in what seemed like a normal house. I realized what I had gotten into after the sun set. The doors locked without a sign of anyone going near them. A cold draft filled the room I was in. The house turned into a horrific scene, and I knew I would never get out alive. It was the Asylum. There’s a rumor in our town, a rumor that started when someone made the observation that everyone fit in. No one was considered strange, homeless, an outsider. That doesn’t seem possible, you think. In my town, there are tons of people with no homes, or people that don’t belong, you think. Well, think again. Those homeless people? Think about how many there are. They fit in with each other. Those people that don’t belong? Once again, they fit in with each other. But then, you
Countless throughout the streets of Jackson, MS there are homeless people asking for food, money, etc. and some people aid them and others walk away. However, does anyone ever see the other side of the equation? Driving down Gallatin St. one night I saw firsthand the “other side”. Because of this, the issue that my research will cover is homelessness. Homelessness is defined as a state in which individuals lack a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence. Poverty, lack of affordable housing, declining wages, lost jobs, the economy, foreclosure, decreased assistance programs, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness, single parenthood, etc. are some of the causes of homelessness in America. Some of the proposed solutions are: affordable housing and homeless prevention programs. However, there needs to be less energy focused on providing temporary housing for those who are homeless, and more focus on providing permanent, affordable housing. Homelessness is an issue that should concern all of us. With a decrease in this situation it would clear up the amount of people walking around on the streets and everyone would feel more comfortable traveling at night. If someone is homeless, it is a common belief that they are more inclined to criminal activity; therefore less homelessness could equal less crime. Homelessness is not discriminatory and can happen to anyone at any time.

The population of Los Angeles continues to grow each day because people perceive that the opportunities will improve their economic and social well-being. Most of them get good jobs manufacturing, business and the government giving them the ability to provide for themselves and their children. Those who are not lucky enough do not realise their goals and depend on the government and the society for basic needs. The effort of the city and the government to house the homeless cannot take the pressure of the rising number of the homeless without the support of the society. Los Angeles in the United State’s largest urban and has the highest number of homeless people making the task of housing its population next to impossible without participation
Homelessness is a huge problem in America. In the United States homelessness is something many Americans don't consider. Million of homeless people, including children, families, babies and elderly live day by day. Housing is a fundamental human need. Home is a place where you feel loved , secured and most happy. One in every 200 American experienced homelessness. In Texas 19,177 person were homeless in 2014. Twenty five percent were homeless with a drug problem or a mental illness. The National Alliance To End Homelessness (NAEH) is a Federal policy to help, aid the homeless and to aware the situation for all Americans. However some policies are not making any progress with people living on the street. The United states need to help more or invest more on housing , apartment so individuals so they can get a better chance in life .This is one the many problems that must be solved soon, therefore should be addressed as a major crisis that is affecting our society's.
Some people believe that homeless individuals are criminals, poor decision makers, drug addicts, alcoholics, mentally ill, and/or lazy. Many times, however, an individual being homeless is not the result of one of the above stereotypes, but that they were simply misfortunate, lost their job, are were unable to obtain a new one. To overcome these stereotypes, people need to think about poverty and homelessness differently. Having a new perspective on homelessness will require that people are educated and knowledgeable regarding the causes of poverty and homelessness. One way to do this would be to set up an organization that works to educate the public on poverty and homelessness. In addition, this organization could arrange for people to talk to homeless individuals. This would allow people to hear the stories of homeless individuals, so that they could learn to see them as real people, rather than just judge them off
I am writing you today for a specific reason. I want to address the issue going on in the community. To be more precise, the issue is the rising percentage of homelessness in the area. The community have put some thought into to it and wanted to understand why isn’t there something being done about this. The externalities of this situation is negative in all ways. I see no positive externalities because being homeless has no benefits. They starve, they sleep in the streets, they beg for money, and they are emotionally damaged. Not only is it negative on them but it is negative for the human beings living in the area because diseases can float around in the air and crime rates can most definitely go up as well. The more homeless people we have
You succinctly describe the great need for homeless and domestic abuse shelters as well as adequate elderly care in the United States. As you note, a person’s needs should first be met by their family. However, it seems that society today has shifted the idea of family, togetherness and responsibility. “Among the most dramatic changes have been the expansion in women’s labor force participation and the related phenomenon of the decline of the “family wage” with which a single breadwinner could support a group of dependents” (Farrell, VandeVusse & Ocobock, 2012). Therefore, the burden of meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in society falls on churches and communities. While churches are empowered with a moral will to help those in need,
This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. The public and private sectors of this country are making a difference in the lives of the homeless by addressing the issues of housing, poverty and education.
