The documentary of the Hollywood Shootout showed clear issues in policing. These issues were surprising and impacted my view of policing. Firstly, police lack availability of high power weapons is shocking. The shootout lasted for nearly an hour. The documentary mentioned that the police officers only had smaller handguns and a few shotguns while the suspects had AK-47s and rifles (OnlyBim, 2021). There were around three hundred police officers present at the scene, and it still took them about an hour to stop the suspects, due to their lack of efficient weapons. Secondly, the tactics used by the police were also surprising. The documentary also mentions how the police were not prepared for this type of situation and how they were unable to …show more content…
What is the difference between a'smart' and a'smart'? Miranda v Arizona was a very important case that had a great impact. Miranda v Arizona is so important as the case resulted in the establishment of Miranda rights. Before Miranda v Arizona, citizens still had the right to counsel and to remain silent; however, police officers did not have to read these rights to suspects. In Miranda v Arizona (1965) the court reports show that it was decided that a person in custody and who is being interrogated must be informed that they have the right to remain silent and the right to have counsel. In Miranda v Arizona (1965) the Supreme Court decided that not informing the suspect of their rights is unconstitutional. After the Supreme Court ruling, law enforcement was then required to read these rights to every suspect who is arrested and interrogated. Failure of police to read the rights results in an unusable confession. The Supreme Court often affects law in the United States. In the United States, the Supreme Court is the highest-level court, and the decisions made by the Supreme Court cannot be appealed. The Supreme Court does not often overturn laws. The cases that the Supreme Court deals with tend to be controversial. Many of the cases that come before the Supreme Court have high impacts and are not just for the two parties. While the Supreme Court does not directly create laws, their decisions still hold a lot of power. The Supreme Court interprets laws and the rights of …show more content…
What is the difference between a.. I watched documentaries over the Antananarivo prison in Madagascar, the South Cotabato jail in the Philippines, and the San Pedro prison in La Paz, Bolivia. In my opinion, the prison with the best structure is the South Cotabato jail. This jail in the Philippines does have many problems, such as overcrowding, inmate on inmate violence, and bad food. Even so, this prison is more organized than the Antananarivo Prison and the San Pedro prison. The South Cotabato jail takes mugshots of its inmates and keeps more detailed records, as opposed to the other prisons. According to the documentary, the South Cotabato jail separates the more dangerous criminals and repeat offenders from the rest of the inmates (Free Documentary, 2021, 8:15). The other prisons do not separate the dangerous inmates from the others. The South Cotabato jail also has security cameras, unlike the other prisons. The South Cotabato jail also makes sure to isolate any sick prisons, this is not done in the Antananarivo prison or the San Pedro prison. In the San Pedro prison, the prison guards never go into the actual jail, and in the Antananarivo prison the guards never check the cells. In the documentary it is mentioned that the guards at the South Cotabato jail inspect the jails for contraband, once a month (Free Documentary, 2021, 30:10). The Antananarivo prison and the San Pedro prison do not attempt checks for contraband. Changes can be made to improve the conditions of
Overcrowding is one of the predominate reasons that Western prisons are viewed as inhumane. Chapman’s article has factual information showing that some prisons have as many as three times the amount of prisoners as allowed by maximum space standards. Prison cells are packed with four to five prisoners in a limited six-foot-by-six-foot space, which then, leads to unsanitary conditions. Prisons with overcrowding are exposed to outbreaks of infectious diseases such as, tuberculosis and hepatitis.
Cops have to use physical force on criminals but is excessive force needed for unarmed criminals. Is it necessary to shoot at an unarmed man 41 times because he made a suspicious move? I know police officers have their reasons, sometimes you have to be in their shoes to understand what they are facing that might be a threat to their life or others around the scene. Its understood, force is sometimes necessary to refrain criminals when they get out of line, or put the police officers life endanger. Inherent criminality; the belief that people who commit crimes are animals and incapable of rehabilitation, leads police to treat people brutally. . Recent statistics published by the Stolen Lives Project estimate that the number of cases in the United States relating to police brutality has reached the thousands, but these statistics come with a disclaimer many, if not most, of these instances are never reported due to fear of reprisal. The fact is there are many cases of police brutality and corruption. Some are not good enough to make it to the front page of the newspaper or to the news. Not enough is being done; lack of community efforts are being made to help. Justice has to be served and the code of silence needs to be broken. Some cops need to be put behind bars. The only way to clean up the city or community is to clean up all the dirty cops. Police brutality is a cruel, inhumane injustice that can be prohibited. No one needs to be afraid or be worried about being intimidated by police and about coming foward with information. Without a doubt we have the good cops and bad cops, about a fraction of those cops still go abusing their authority to innocent people. If it were not for bystanders witnessing the brutality cops put on people many cases wouldn’t be what they are today. Fresno Police Department
Over the years, this country has witnessed many cases of police brutality. It has become a controversial topic among communities that have seen police brutality take place in front of their homes. Officers are faced with many threatening situations everyday forcing them to make split second decisions and to expect the worst and hope for the best. Police officers are given the power to take any citizens rights away and even their lives. With that kind of power comes responsibility, that’s one major concern with the amount of discretion officers have is when to use force or when to use lethal force. The use of excessive force may or not be a large predicament but should be viewed by both the police and the community.
Recently in the United States there has been in increase in deaths that have come from police officers using deadly force. The use of force is inevitable as a police officer, many times their own lives or the life’s civilians are at risk when it comes to determine what type of force a officer should use. There are many incidents where police officer have to react in a matter of seconds and has to choose between his own life or that of the individual causing the disturbance. When a Police Officer uses deadly force has caused outraged with the public, stirring up protests and creating a scandal for the police officer and the Police Department. Many do not know when it is right for an officer to use deadly force and what constitutes it, or what happens when the officer does not use the appropriate amount of force that is required to control the situation. There has been many changes in Police Departments around the country to try to reduce the use of deadly force in response to the issues that have occurred because of it.
...y been an explosion of young people, foreigners, and people who simply subscribe to a lifestyle completely different from what a traditional American was considered to be. Policing has come a long way. As Fyfe points out, extralegal violence has become almost completely eradicated. (Fyfe article) This shows that departments have accepted the huge array of different lifestyle. Yet, the existence of violence due to misunderstanding shows that they do not yet understand it. With enough education, including the education of citizens, there can be an understanding produced that will alleviate many of the situations which now arise from miscommunication between the police and citizens.
Today police officers are under more scrutiny then ever before. This is due in case to technology and now all there actions are recorded by the people, since everyone has a phone with a camera these days. The biggest problem that’s been talked about is police excessive use of force.
It seems that anymore all we hear on the evening news is something about a shooting. Whether it be about an officer himself being shot or firing his gun, the unnecessary violence needs to stop. Officers in large cities, and sometimes even small ones, are getting to be a little too power hungry. They do not care about who they fire at anymore simply because they themselves are officers and, in the words of several people, they are above the law. Too many people are being killed for unlawful reasons by officers and not getting the justification they deserve.
...including overcrowded and dirty cells... Suspects detained by police pending investigations are thrown in cells with hardened criminals on remand, a development he called unfair” (“Caribbean Prison Conditions Deplorable”). The prisoners in these jails are being held in conditions that are unsuited for human life, and these inappropriate conditions do not help the prisoners right the wrongs they have committed. They ultimately leave the prisoners in a state of mind no one should be in, which brings them farther away from the society. Both groups, the corporation in the book and the government in the article, have received what they wanted from the conditions they have put their patients and prisoners in.
Prisons for a long time have been a gateway to try to save society, when the only thing that it’s doing is hurting the social order because it’s creating more problems that are not being treated from the beginning. Crime has become a big problem during these hard times with the poor economy, but it has especially affected Latin America because of all the problems that overcrowded prisons have brought forward. In Latin America Brazil and Mexico are the two largest countries that have been affected with having the highest percentage of crimes, inmates in prisons, and concerns with overcrowded prisons. And these increase with the high crime rates in Latin America that are rising due to drug trafficking wars in Brazil and Mexico. "The country with the largest prison is Brazil, with 194,074 prisoners followed by México, with 144, 261 prisoners" (Pinzon 1). These numbers are only rising because of the lack of poorly trained officials and the limits amount of money for programs to help them integrate back into society (Dammert and Zuniga 9). As citizens we have learned to think of prisons as the last resort to put criminals, not being aware of the consequences that it will bring in the long run for society. Prison systems fail in Latin American because they are overcrowded up to three times more of the capacity they’re built for (Pinzon 1). And this problem has caused higher crimes rates as well as the spread of infectious diseases within the prisons particularly in Brazil and Mexico because their countries with higher prevalence of injecting drug users (IDUs) and because they go unseen (Dolan 36).
Looking back at the most controversial police shooting incidents, sometimes finding that while the shooting may be legally justified, there were missed opportunities to ratchet down the encounter, to slow things down, to call in additional resources, in the minutes before the shooting occurred. (Wexler, 2015)” Our government initiative is to revamp police training once again. Many cases have influenced a change in police training such as Michael Brown Ferguson shooting case and the New York City death of Eric Garner. Our CEO and Chairman have sat down and came up with a blueprint to take police officers back to their essence of protecting and serving. This blueprint will teach officers to use force when it is necessary and to ask questions and make human decisions before jumping the gun. In certain states they are also raising the pay of police officers to spike recruitment. In different states their training consist on what they need to work on the most, For example, Missouri is getting more tactical training, Los Angeles is getting life preservation training, New York is going to use minimum force and more de-escalating by communication. In conclusion police force has gotten way out of control and if we are unable to contain it now then no one will have trust in our police officers. Revamping the training to use more communication and less force is a great idea. Many times conflicts gets resolved faster by understand a person instead of using force to create a bigger issue. The use of force in police training is insufficient because they are training the officer to use more force to subdue a suspect. Leaving room for a lot of civilians are ending up hurt or deceased in police custody. The plummet in police recruitment is due to the bad name they have been receiving because of unreasonable actions. Due to the rise of police
Sadly enough, police brutality has become normalized in today’s America. According to The Washington Post, less than two months into 2018, 146 people have been shot and killed by the police. The irony of the police brutality crisis is the idea that innocent lives are being taken every day at, what is supposed to be, the hands of our nation’s protectors. Because of the power included in a policeman’s title, misuse of such authority has caused an impending crisis in our nation. Resolving police brutality is crucial to rebuilding the structure of our communities as well as the trust between citizens and policemen.
I chose Bolivia to research because the county itself has been through a lot of turmoil and tragedy. I thought it would be interesting to see where they are at with their correctional system. I found just that, an interesting read about the top 6 most bizarre prisons, and San Pedro Prison, in Bolivia was on the list. Emily Thomas with the Huffington Post writes San Pedro Prison is “one of South America’s most notorious and unique penitentiaries. Though the prison features food stands, hairdressers and even a hotel, there’s one catch: inmates have to pay for their cells, which range from $1000-$1500 for the entirety of the inmate’s sentence. The cells range from posh living quarters complete with a TV and kitchen amenities to shared cement cells.” (Thomas, 2013) For prisoners to earn money they will perform normal job duties for an extremely discounted pay rate. In return they are able to furnish their cells with nice things. The San Pedro prison is overcrowded, and rests in the heart of downtown. The prison is made of falling apart adobe, wooden floors, metal roofs, and cramped rooms. Something I found interesting with this prison is that the prisoner’s family could come and stay with them in the prison due to it being economical. Here violent criminals intermingle with non-violent criminals. So, for Bosnian correctional systems, they have a high population due to pretrial
Police officers are forced to make decisions every day from deciding whether or not to pull someone over for speeding to whether or not to use lethal force on a threat. My opinion on the officers in shootings is that these officers may take more shots than needed or miss a lot of their shots but it’s going to happen. Most of the police forces do not record such stats and I think they should. However people don’t know how stressful it must be to be in a situation where a police officer is in danger and must protect himself and others from a threat and it is his duty to make these shoot don’t shoot decisions. I also think that police officers should be more cautious and make sure they do every thing right.
With police being armed to a large extent, criminals will know what might happen when and if one opens fire on an officer. Law enforcement having weapons would be intimidating. While if somewhere that the Law enforcement are not armed, the criminals would have an advantage. Riots that may end up happening, and the mobs would easily disperse faster if the law enforcements discharge weapons into the air will stun the crowd. On the side not seeing armed law enforcement, the citizens would feel safer and secure when they see an officer knowing they can tackle threats that might happen. As armed violence has increased sharply in parts of the developed world, the police need to redefine their role so that it is a more appropriate response to a contemporary problem. If they are not armed and something that comes their way that t...
The use of force by police officers is a problem and will be until the media focuses their effort on the training of police officers. What they mean by use of force Phillips (2015) defined “as using more force than required to gain compliance in an incident”. Gross (2016) pointed out “a series of shootings has started a national debate about the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers”. This is starting to get the conversation back going with the series of shooting being all over the media and discussed in the upcoming presidential election. The main aspect of this is the disproportionate use of force by police officers in regard to the race of the individuals in the incidents.
