Friends are critical in people’s lives. Without friends your life would be lonely, no fun, and no one would care about you. In the book Holes by Louis Sachar, what makes the bond between Stanley and Zero such a good one is how they care and motivate each other. In my own life, I have friends that also propel and aid me in school. Ultimately, a lesson from the book that I have taken is to never leave a friend behind because it could change your life.

A main part in a strong friendship is caring about each other. Within the book Holes, Stanley and Zero were helping each other up on the mountain. While Stanley and Zero were going up the mountain Zero collapsed and Stanley couldn’t leave Zero behind. Stanley with all of his might “took Zero’s forearm and pulled him upright” slowly carrying him up the mountain (Sachar, 170). Stanley gets stronger because of the support that Zero shows him. This shows that Stanley cares about him, and that he doesn’t want to leave Zero behind. Another plot in the story is when Zigzag fought Stanley. Stanley was in a choke hold because of Zigzag but but out of nowhere Zero jumped on Zigzag making him let go of Stanley. Zero fought Zigzag which proved his friendship to Zero. In the story Holes, Zero and Stanley were motivating each other by giving each other thumbs ups when they were going up Big Thumb. When both Stanley and Zero were going to Big Thumb, Zero had a lot of stomach problems because of the sploosh. Zero collapsed and it was hard for Zero to stand up, “You okay?” Stanley asked. Zero gave the thumbs-up sign” (Sachar, 165). That was how both of them helped each other, by giving each other the thumbs up
