A Character Sketch of Holden Caulfield
In the novel The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is the main character that the book revolves around. He is a seventeen year old boy that sometimes acts immature: "Some times I act like I'm thirteen" (13). He stands tall measuring six feet two and a half. Even though he is young, one side of his head is "Full of millions of grays hairs" (13). This grey air seems unusual and atypical because he had it since he was a child! Most people know him say he acts like he is twelve, including his father. Caulfield does agree that he does sometimes act like an adolescent, but not all the time. As he states "Sometimes I act a lot older than I am —I really do—but people never notice it. People never notice anything" (13). This d¬¬¬¬oes show that he does put forth effort to act his age, but sometimes he gets way out of hand.
Throughout the book, he does act as if he is mature, but some of his actions that he does are far past his age level. One example is when he goes to a hotel for a prostitute, even though in the end he decides to pass on it. Indeed, this action shows his immaturity. Furthermore, another major problem that he has is an alcoholic; he can’t control himself to stop drinking. He keeps drinking until he gets drunk. As Caulfield describes it "One thing I have, it's a terrific capacity. I can drink all night and not even show it, if I'm in the mood" (118). Not only does this show that he is immature, but also that he has a lack of self-regulation and pity over himself. Another serious issue that he faces is he is a very heavy smoker for his age. He doesn’t want all the children to go through the tough times that he had to face through his youth because they have to enjoy their childhood. He wants to protect all the children by being their guardian and savor from innocence. In the end, Holden’s dream job of being the catcher in the rye is a job that he has dreamed about because he wants to be a savor of innocence for children.

Jerome David Salinger’s only novel, The Catcher in the Rye, is based on the life events shaping main character, Holden Caulfield, into the troubled teen that is telling the story in 1950. The theme of the story is one of emotional disconnection felt by the alienated teenagers of this time period. The quote, “ I didn’t know anyone there that was splendid and clear thinking and all” (Salinger 4) sets the tone that Holden cannot find a connection with anyone around him and that he is on a lonely endeavor in pursuit of identity, acceptance and legitimacy. The novel “The Catcher in the Rye,” revolves around the protagonist Holden Caulfield as the story is told from his perspective. J.D. Salinger constructed Holden Caulfield as a cynical person who cannot accept to grow up. Throughout “The Catcher in the Rye,” J.D. Salinger uses symbolism to reveal and reinforce critical aspects of the protagonist Holden Caulfield. Three important aspects Holden acquired through Salinger’s use of symbolism are: his stubborn, uncompromising mentality; his softer, more caring respectful side; Holden’s cowardly way of acting and thinking.
Holden Caulfield is a sixteen-year-old who explores New York City after he is expelled from his prep school (Salinger). He cannot return back home because he is afraid of his parents’ response and takes no responsibility for his actions whatsoever. Holden hates the adult world, where he calls all adults “phonies.” In his world, one can’t go back to childhood, but one can’t grow up because that will make one a phony (Bloom, The Catcher in the Rye 124). Holden is stuck in between a world, where he doesn’t want to remain a child or grow up into the adult he is expected to become. According to Chen, Holden fears the “complexity, unpredictability, conflict, and change” of the adult world. He occasionally acts like an adult, when he hires a prostitute (Salinger 119), checks into a hotel room (Salinger 79), and takes care of his sister, Phoebe. As a result of Holden’s immense fear of growing up, he tends to partake in childish tendencies, such as wearing a bright red hunting hat. These actions are his way of isolating and protecting himself. Holden is stuck in his own little world. These actions are very immature; Holden does not accept the adult world for what it is. He finds that it is impossible and unnecessary to keep all the innocence in the world. While with Phoebe Holden says, “I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye...I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff...That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye” (173).
