A lot of teens this day and age don’t have a deep connection with their parents and siblings. Some don’t know their own sibling's middle name or maybe their birthday. A teenager at Woodbridge High School was onced asked to write down a family tree for a history project. And when he is told to put his siblings full name he wasn’t able to. Distraught he went home to ask his siblings so he could get his homework done. But this is the opposite of Holden Caulfield, In the book The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden’s connection to his family is as strong as it could be. Holden has traveled from school to school and is mentally lost trying to find his way back home. When he realizes he is safe with his family, his actions start to shift to one of a caring and loving individual. Holden has come a long way from his school. He met with total strangers, had his money stolen from him, and sat in a room wondering if he should live. Now he decided that he should go back to his home and see his younger sister and on his way home he stops at a record store, thinking of old Phoebe, and buys her her favorite record: Little Shirley Beans. He was walking through the central park when “[He] dropped old Phoebe’s record. [He] damn near cried.” (Salinger 111) Throughout the novel Holden has been a really self centered person but when it came to his sister’s gift being destroyed he was heart broken. When the shock of the gift being broken was gone he realized that the gift he knew she wanted the most was gone he started to cry. Not only had his actions changed, his emotional state changed as well. Holden really cared about making her happy and he wanted to try and keep that brotherly bond together. Which they can infer him as having characteristics such as being annoying and having crude language. These attributes are not very common in a good and healthy relationship. While Holden was at his school his roommate, stradlater, left on a date with his old friend Jane. Holden started to get worried by how late they were staying out. Holden's willingness to care about Jane shows how deep of a connection they had. Late that night Stradlater got back from his date and Holden in his frustration decided to not care about his friend’s wants and “[He] went right on smoking like a madman.” (Salinger 47) At this moment he did not care how Stradlater would feel and continued to do what he pleased. With him acting like this to his friends we can see how he seems to not care deeply about his relationships. But when Holden goes to visit his sister Phoebe we see how much he puts into their relationship. Holden is not a good person to be around when he is upset. Like the emotional person he is Holden doesn’t make the best decisions. With this we can see that he isn’t the best person to make respectful and caring relationships with. We see this with phoebe a bunch, but, in the opposite way. He seems to have a better relationship with her than with anybody else in the book.
