Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is a novel about the way humans will revert to their flawed nature when a non-morally developed leader leads them. For example, Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Nazi Germany, caused the Nazis to become discriminatory and blood-thirsty as they forced Jews into concentration camps. Golding’s theme parallels Hitler’s leadership over Nazi Germany and Jack’s leadership over his tribe. A leader that discriminates, will cause the population he leads to revert to their murderous instincts. (Meier) Hitler believed in the “racial superiority of the Germanic peoples (the Aryan race) and in the inferiority of other races, especially Jews,” which only caused “many Austrian extremists” to become more violent and expressive of their hatred toward inferior races. (“Adolf Hitler”) Once Hitler had absolute control over the German government, “Hitler and his allies began to suppress the remaining opposition,” which led to other parties being “intimidated into disbanding.” (Golding 168) Following Jack’s action of forcibly snatching Piggy’s glasses, he leads his tribe back to their camp, “trotting steadily, exulting in his achievement. He was a chief now in truth; and he made stabbing motions with his spear.” Hitler and Jack were both leaders who, ultimately, wanted supreme power. Though they both had their own reasons for desiring that power, the two similarly used forms of intimidation and played on others’ fear to receive the
Leadership is a trait that many people have naturally and others try to obtain. Many people consider themselves a good leader when they fail to carry out the characteristics leadership require. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is a better leader than Jack because of the traits he possesses. That is why certain skills are necessary to be considered a successful leader.
The book Lord of the Flies was William Golding’s first novel he had published, and also his one that is the most well known. It follows the story of a group of British schoolboys whose plane, supposedly carrying them somewhere safe to live during the vaguely mentioned war going on, crashes on the shore of a deserted island. They try to attempt to cope with their situation and govern themselves while they wait to be rescued, but they instead regress to primal instincts and the manner and mentality of humanity’s earliest societies.

At a certain moment in the book two of the main characters, Ralph and Jack declare a war between each other because Jack refuses to have Ralph as the group’s leader for another second. This then leads to the division of the group as well as many scenes in which one sabotages the other. An example of this is when Jack’s tribe steals

Of the group of young boys there are two who want to lead for the duration of their stay, Jack and Ralph. The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding used a group of British boys beached on a deserted island to illustrate the malicious nature in mankind. Lord of the Flies dealt with the changes the boys underwent as they gradually adapted to the freedom from their society. William Golding's basic philosophy that man was inherently evil was expressed in such instances as the death of Simon, the beast within the boys, and the way Ralph was fervently hunted.

Hitler has already called for his people to unite and stand as together and conquer the world in the name of the German people, In Germany, Hitler rallied his people to work together to pursue a common goal, making Germany the ruler of the world, most of the people listened and worked hard enough to make Germany extremely powerful (Kershaw). Both leaders started by unifying their followers through promises of success and support of each other, the things that were very important to the people at the time. In showing their followers what unity could bring, both leaders were able to unify their people without using force, but by promising what they feel they need. Jack’s actions matter because they are very similar to Hitler’s and both of their methods of unifying their people led them to destroy their own society. Jack was skilled at manipulating others to do things that they wouldn't normally do, creating an artificial trust and in turn, discretely promoting his power. Hitler was also skilled at manipulating the German people to put him in power and to follow his commands, as he too, would create an artificial trust. In all the confusion, Jack managed to convince the boys to chant and kill
In the Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses characters to convey the main idea of his novel. The story begins with a war, and a plane carrying several young boys, who are being evacuated, is shot down from the sky. There are no adult survivors; however; the boys were brought together by Ralph blowing on the conch shell. They formed a tribe to stay alive. Slowly the stability and the sense of safety in the group started to deteriorate, similar to the downfall of societies during World War II. They are not only hunting animals now, but they are killing each other like savages in order to stay alive. This action of killing is like Hitler during World War II and his persecution of Jews during the Holocaust.
There are always people who, in a group, come out with better qualities to be a leader than others. The strongest people however, become the greater influences which the others decide to follow. However, sometimes the strongest person is not the best choice. Authors often show how humans select this stronger person to give an understanding of the different powers that people can posses over others.
To begin with, Racism had a big effect in the genocide and murders in Germany. According A Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust, it states that “ It was the explicit aim of Hitler's regime to create a European world both dominated and populated by the "Aryan" race. Some people were undesirable by Nazi standards because of who they were, their genetic or cultural origins, or health conditions.” (“ Victims” ). It is so devastating that someone could kill or torture anyone who was not like them or who fought against them. The Jews were required to carry their identification cards. They were also excluded from businesses, parks, resorts, and forests. German children were taught that the Jews and Gypsies were not as good as the Germans. One of the methods used to teach German children was to make the Jewish children stand up and point out their distinguishing features. Later on the Jewish children were banned from schools and had curfews. John Boyne Quotes from his book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas “What exactly was the difference? he wondered to himself. And who decided which people wore the striped pajamas and which people wore the uniforms?” In his speeches and writings Hitler spread his believes in racial “purity” and in the superiority of their Germanic race. What he called an “Aryan master race”. These believes became the governments ideology and were spread in publicly displayed posters on the radios,m...
The novel “Lord of the Flies” was written by William Golding to demonstrate the problems of society and the sinful nature of man.
“The generality of men are naturally apt to be swayed by fear rather than reverence and to refrain from evil rather because of the punishment that it brings than because of its own foulness” (Aristotle). A major theme throughout the Lord of The Flies is man’s essence for civilization and society. Institutions and rules make man to control himself; even though man’s corrupt and evil nature is unmasked when the structures of a society fade away. The boys survive by hunting for meat and killing pigs under Jack’s control meanwhile he strives for power and hunting. After a while they are split into two tribes, Jack’s tribe and Ralph’s tribe. The hunters become savage under Jack’s rule while Ralph tries to keep his group organized. Ralph, Piggy and Samneric refuse to join Jack’s tribe. Simon is brutally killed by the group of boys on island while Piggy was murdered by Roger. Jack’s tribe set the whole island on fire in order to make Ralph out of his hiding place; but smoke catches the attention of a novel officer and finally they are rescued. The boys are described as savage human beings that cannot uphold onto the rules and instructions given by their society. In 1934, the death of President Hindenburg of Germany removed the last remaining obstacle for Adolf Hitler to assume power. Soon thereafter, he declared himself President and Fuehrer, which means “supreme leader”. That was just the beginning of what would almost 12 years of Jewish persecution in Germany, mainly because of Hitler’s hatred towards the Jews. It is difficult to doubt that Hitler genuinely feared and hated Jews. His whole existence was driven by an obsessive loathing of them (Hart-Davis 14).
The use of manipulation on others causes superiority and inferiority, which leads to a downfall in a society. William Golding wrote the novel, The Lord of the Flies (1954), in which he uses the protagonist, Jack Merridew, to demonstrate dictator-like characteristics. In comparison to today’s society, the leader of Ethiopia from 1995 to 2012, Meles Zenawi, has characteristics that mirror Jack’s leadership qualities. Both Jack Merridew and Meles Zenawi share characteristics that lean towards them both being dictators, which include: dominance, the torturing of others, and intimidation.
