HITLER, Adolf (1889-1945). The rise of Adolf Hitler to the position of dictator of Germany is the story of a frenzied ambition that plunged the world into the worst war in history. Only an army corporal in World War I, Hitler became Germany's chancellor 15 years later.
He was born on April 20, 1889, in Braunau-am-Inn, Austria, of German descent. His father Alois was the illegitimate son of Maria Anna Schicklgruber. In middle age Alois took the name Hitler from his paternal grandfather. After two wives had died Alois married his foster daughter, Klara Poelzl, a Bavarian, 23 years younger than he. She became Adolf's mother.
Hitler's rambling, emotional autobiography 'Mein Kampf' (My Struggle) reveals his unstable early life. His father, a petty customs official, wanted the boy to study for a government position. But as young Hitler wrote later, "the thought of slaving in an office made me ill . . . not to be master of my own time." Passively defying his father, the self-willed boy filled most of his school hours with daydreams of becoming a painter. His one school interest was history, especially that of the Germans. When his teacher glorified Germany's role, "we would sit there enraptured and often on the verge of tears." Adolf Hitler was born April 20, 1889 to Klara and Alois Hitler in a small town in Austria called Braunau. Braunau was located about 65 miles from munich and about 30 miles north from Salzburg. Adolf grew up not having as much money as they would like but still made it work with what they had. Adolfs dad, Alois Hitler was a mid- level customs worker while his mom did not have a job so she could take care of the children. He had five siblings, but only one survived childhood due to illnesses and lack of medicine. Paula Hitler, his sister was the only sibling that survived childhood while Gustav, Ida, Otto, and Edmund. Besides them, he did have a stepbrother named Alois and step-sister named Angela from his father's previous marriages. His father had two marriages before Adolf was born. Adolf’s father was fifty-one when he had him, and died when Adolf was only thirteen. Adolfs mom, Klara had died of breast cancer in 1908 (Early Years).

Schooling was one of the main things that set Hitler off in the real world. At age 11 he was very popular among friends. As of well, he was excellent in school. He received the highest marks in all of his classes. Problem was, was that when he hit age 12 he all of the sudden became the least desirable in his school. Then instead of receiving the highest marks he received the lowest marks in his classes. In 1900 his father took notice of this problem then withdrew him from school and sent him to a civil servant school named Realschule. In 1904 he quit Realschule and joined another school named Steyr only to quit in 1905. For 2 years he did no schooling and only art. His dream even as a child was to be an artist but for a short time he wanted to be a priest. When his 2 years of art was done he thought that his art was great so he traveled to Vienna, Austria for it. When he took the entrance exam he ended up failing tremendously. He tried the exam again but failed again. That then brought Hitler to a dark depression and he disappeared for 5 years.

He was named chancellor on January 30, 1933 by president Paul Van Hidenburg. His rise to power could have ended if the Enabling Act of 1933 was not adopted. The Enabling Act of 1933 meant that Hitler could enact laws and endemocract in Germany. The Nazi party used force to scare the German Governmant into voting for the act. The day the voting for the Nazi troopers gathered outside the opera house, chanting,"Full power or else." under Hitlers rule, Germany was transformed into a racist totlaitarian state which controlled nearly all aspects for everyones life.
Adolf’s life turned upside down when on February 2, 1900, Adolf’s younger brother, Edmund, died from measles. The death of Edmund greatly affected Adolf. Instead of being a confident, outgoing and excellent student, he became morose, detached, and a sullen boy who often fought with his father and teachers. He waited a year and applied again. He never got into art school. When World War II began, he wanted to serve as German soldier. He got endured in an explosion which resulted in short term hearing loss. Adolf was sent in for surgery and when he woke up, the first thing he heard was that Germany surrendered. Hitler became a memeber of the Nazi group in 1923. He led a coup to overthrow the government. Due to that, he served a nine month of a five year sentence. While Hitler was in jail, he wrote a book about how he thinks things should be (My Struggle). He was determined to build up the Nazi Party to take over the governement legally. He gave strong powerful speeches and led people to believe what he was doing was the right thing to do.
