Nothing Lasts Forever... At Least Nothing Good Nothing lasts forever. Although things may be going well, people have a tendency to ruin them by not thinking before acting. For example, when Quin and Laurie get into an accident, Quin lies, and says he hit a deer, when in entity he hit a girl, who goes to their school, her name is Analise. This girl’s life is now in danger, and because these two teenagers won’t fess up, Analise’s friends and family will face a great amount of sorrow. The novel, Hit and Run by Lurlene McDaniel emphasizes the universal theme, all good things come to an end through a series of juxtaposing characters, a problematic plot, and a deceiving setting. Although Asheville High may seem like a typical high school, the reality of it is much worse. One situation that portrays this is when the principle of the high school informs the students that Analise has been in an accident. He quavers, “I’m sure most of you know by now that senior Analise Bower has been in a terrible accident.” (52) This situation, represents the hidden aspects of the school. In reality, many people have a lot going on, but keep it hidden on the inside. Because they do not show others how they are truly feeling it comes as a surprise when word gets out. This mimics AsheVille High and how many of the students who did not know about what had happened to Analise were probably having a really good day, but the news of her accident more than likely, ruined that. Another example from the novel represents the hidden emotion within the characters as well as the theme and how this news affects the high school students. The example reads, “When announcements are over, the whole room is quiet, subdued.” (52) These words also render how any news, whether it is good or bad, can easily transform the mood of any setting or person.
