History of Informatics There are many sources of information out on the World Wide Web (WWW) regarding health care informatics groups. Sources that can, and will, be significant in the ever evolving area of technology in the health care setting. This paper looks at three informatics groups that have a large impact on informatics. Also, the specialty area of nursing informatics will be evaluated and will look at the future trends and challenges that may be encountered. The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) The ANIA is the result of joining together the Capital Area Roundtable on Informatics in Nursing (CARING) (founded in 1982) and the ANIA (founded in 1992) back in 2010 (“About Us”, n.d.). Members of this association include nurses and health care professionals nationwide. The ANIA gives nursing professionals an edge to staying in the know on health care informatics. On their website, www.ania.org, they have a collection of access points to news, events, jobs, and education on nursing informatics. A publication of Nursing Informatics Today can be found that aims, “…to publish articles that consider issues, trends, research, and technology related to nursing informatics” ("Nursing Informatics Today," n.d., p. 1). The ANIA also works in collaboration with several other organizations in their activities. Groups such as the ANI (The Alliance for Nursing Informatics), HIMSS (Health Information Management and Systems Society), AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association), FierceHealthIT, and The un SUMMIT. This collaboration acts as an educational and networking resource. As the evolution of healthcare from paper documentation to electronic documentation and ordering, the security of patient information is becoming more difficult to maintain. Electronic healthcare records (EHR), telenursing, Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE) are a major part of the future of medicine. Social media also plays a role in the security of patient formation. Compromising data in the information age is as easy as pressing a send button. New technology presents new challenges to maintaining patient privacy. The topic for this annotated bibliography is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Nursing informatics role is imperative to assist in the creation and maintenance of the ease of the programs and maintain regulations compliant to HIPAA. As a nurse, most documentation and order entry is done electronically and is important to understand the core concepts of HIPAA regarding electronic healthcare records. Using keywords HIPAA and informatics, the author chose these resources from scholarly journals, peer reviewed articles, and print based articles and text books. These sources provide how and when to share patient information, guidelines and regulation d of HIPAA, and the implementation in relation to electronic future of nursing.

This paper will identify the use of Electronic Health Records and how nursing plays an important role. Emerging in the early 2000’s, utilizing Electronic Health Records have quickly become a part of normal practice. An EHR could help prevent dangerous medical mistakes, decrease in medical costs, and an overall improvement in medical care. Patients are often taking multiple medications, forget to mention important procedures/diagnoses to providers, and at times fail to follow up with providers. Maintaining an EHR could help tack data, identify patients who are due for preventative screenings and visits, monitor VS, & improve overall quality of care in a practice. Nurse informaticists play an important role in the adaptation, utilization, and functionality of an EHR. The impact the EHR could have on a general population is invaluable; therefore, it needs special attention from a trained professional.

The integration of an early warning scoring system with nursing practice is a means with which technology and nursing knowledge evolve to “applied wisdom” (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012). The data is represented by the vital signs. The collection of vital signs will generate information. The information will be scored in the system and alert the nurse when there are abnormal findings. The nest steps can only be taken by the nurse. Critical thinking, interpretation and application of the findings from the patient’s medical record are the next steps. Nurses must be able to apply the information into their nursing practice in order to continue to develop and deliver the best care to patients. As technology continues to expand to many clinical areas, nurses will need to continue to understand how the world of technology translates to patients.
There are quite a few proceedings that must occur before the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) offers specialty certification in nursing informatics. Nursing informatics (NI) was recognized by the American Nurses Association (ANA) as a nursing specialty in 1992. Since its acceptance there have been several revisions to the published informatics scope of practices statement as well as the standards of practice. Nursing informatics is a branch of nursing or area of specialty that concentrates on finding ways to improve data management and communication in nursing with the sole objective of improving efficiency, reduction of health costs and enhancement of the quality of patient care (Murphy, 2010). It is a growing area of nursing specialty that combines computer science, information technology and nursing science in the management and processing of nursing information, data and knowledge with the sole objective of supporting nursing practice and research. Various nursing theorists have formulated various theoretical frameworks or models related to nursing informatics (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2013). They are defined as a cluster of related concepts or ideas that establish actions that act as major guidelines in nursing informatics to issues related to the central concept of data, information and knowledge. Some of the theories that inform and assist in the framing of nursing informatics include Turley's nursing informatics model, Goossen’s framework for nursing informatics research and Staggers & Parks’ nurse-computer interaction framework (Elkind, 2009).

Technology has transformed so much that today the most complicated computations are done within seconds. Human dependency on computers is increasing everyday. Just think how hard it would be to live a week without a computer. We owe the advancements of computers and other such electronic devices to the intelligence of men of the past.
