Chemistry has been around since the earth was created, a time when computers, televisions, or simple beakers weren’t invented yet. Chemistry was always around, but it wasn’t considered a science until modern chemistry was discovered. Modern chemistry has only been around for centuries, where author Robert Boyle published The Skeptical Chemist in 1661. Soon after Robert’s publication, Antoine Lavoisier developed the law of conservation of mass, and that was the start of modern chemistry being considered a science. After this, chemistry was changed forever.
Starting in the prehistoric era, chemistry was used at first to explain religious things, like known metals were compared to heavenly bodies. 1,330 years later Democritus said that the atom was the simplest of all matter, a statement that was the first in its kind when dealing with matter. One hundred and thirty years later, Aristotle declares the existence of the four elements, fire, water, air, and earth. He also said matter had four properties, hot, cold, dry, and wet. All these things happened in the time between the Prehistoric times, and the Beginning of the Christian Era. Chemistry was considered black magic in this time period.
Soon after alchemy was used, which was using science methods to turn ordinary metals to gold. The start of alchemy happened when alchemists, using influence from Aristotle, attempted to change cheap metals to gold, something that was an unheard of idea at the time, and they used something called a Philosopher’s Stone to do. Pope John XXII soon after issued an order saying that gold making was forbidden, but that didn’t stop the gold makers. Chemistry is a huge topic, with history dating all the back to BC, a time where the country United States wasn’t even thought about yet, and now one of the few things that have advanced so far since that time period, has been chemistry. Starting from the thought of Black Magic and Alchemy being real all the way to now where Chemistry is huge with new discoveries every year, you can only begin to scratch the surface on what impact chemistry has had in our society. Chemistry is a subject that will forever be expanding, and I feel that right now we have covered very little about the mystery of chemistry.
Chemists are the specialists in chemistry, that interact with chemical properties, and reactions. The earth is made up of different gases. Some of this gases are needed for life in the planet but other gases can be harmful to the living. Gas’s use in regular quantities are favorable to the earth. The world started to become more advance and had to use more of this gases to produce everyday objects and inventions by men. Little did we knew this chemicals we going to affect us in our life. Chemist Jose Mario Molina actually discovered that chlorofluorocarbons were affecting the ozone layer.
This chemistry book report is focus on a book called “Napoleon's buttons: How 17 molecules changed history” by Penny Le Couteur and Jay Burreson. The publisher of this book is Tarcher Putnam, the book was published in Canada on 2003 with 17 chapters (hey the number match the title of the book!) and a total of 378 pages. The genre of this book is nonfiction. “Napoleon's Buttons” contain a fascinating story of seventeen groups of molecules that have greatly changed the course of history and continuing affect the world we live in today. It also reveal the astonishing chemical connection among some unrelated events, for example: Chemistry caused New Amsterdamers to be renamed New Yorkers and one little accident of detonating cotton apron in a minor housekeeping mishap lead to the development of modern explosives and the founding of the movie industry.

This showed that dissolved gases were mechanically mixed with the water and weren?t mixed naturally. But in 1803 it was found that this depended on the weight of the individual particles of the gas or atoms. By assuming the particles were the same size, Dalton was able to develop the idea of atomic weights. In 1803 this theory was finalised and stated that (1) all matter is made up of the smallest possible particles termed atoms, (2) atoms of a given element have unique characteristics and weight, and (3) three types of atoms exist: simple (elements), compound (simple molecules), and complex (complex molecules).
The first theory to do with the atom was by Democritus and Leucippus who first proposed the idea of the atom as an invisible particle that all matter is made of. However, the first real discovery of an element, besides those like Gold and Silver etc. (which people had been aware of before written history) was phosphorus, which was discovered by Henning Brand in 1649. In 1787, a French chemist called Antoine Lavoisier, made a list of all 33 known elements of the time. Between 1649 and 1869, the Periodic table was added to and in 1869 a total of 63 elements had been discovered. In 1864, John Newlands made a huge advancement in the arranging of these elements, as he was able to sort them in order of atomic weights and was also able to observe similar properties between elements. Although Egyptian historians claim that gold history began as far back as 3600 BC. According to them, humans have been taken up with the luster and splendor of gold since that time. According to some other historians, gold history began about 6000 years ago when people started making use of it to make jewelry and other adorning ornaments in Eastern Europe, Egypt and the Near East, because of its low resistance, shine and its unchanging beauty. Regardless of how gold history began and what made it so popular, one sure thing is that gold has an exceedingly long usage history period in this world. In chemistry there are many renowned scientists. One of the more well-known scientists is John Dalton. He revolutionized the way we view chemistry through his observations and theories. He had many theories that still affect us in the present day. One that stands out in particular is his atomic theory. Without all of his contributions our modern world could not thrive like it is currently.
The writings of some Greek philosophers may be considered to be among the very first chemical theories, such as the theory that all things are composed of air, earth, fire, and water. Each of these were represented by different elements, such as sulfur, salt, mercury, and, ideally, gold. Other ideas held by alchemists were that each of the known elements were represented by heavenly bodies. Gold was earth's representation of the sun, silver for the moon, mercury for the planet Mercury, copper for Venus, iron for Mars, tin for Jupiter, and lead for Saturn.
Since Lewis was not known for writing novels, there are very few sources that can be drawn from here. There is one book that goes into detail about Lewis’s life and findings. It is titled “Cathedrals of Science: The Personalities and Rivalries That Made Modern Chemistry”and it is by Patrick Coffey. The book was published in 2008 by Oxford University Press, making it quite modern for a source on early twentieth century scientists. Coffey was born in 1945, just a year before Lewis’s death, but he has spoken to many who had personal experience with the scientist. The same year as it’s publication, it won the PROSE award for the best chemistry book.
Chemistry has been around for a very long time. Chemistry is the branch of physical science that studies composition, properties, energy, and behavior of matter. It is said that chemistry has been around since prehistoric times. This was in the form of everyday objects like pottery, cosmetics and perfumes, and extracting metals from ores. Chemistry is based on the discovery and study of elements. Some elements were known to ancient man, but most were discovered by chemists and alchemists. Some say that chemistry started in the early Stone Age when man made fire. Chemistry is the study of chemical composition and properties of matter and the reactions of that matter. The study of any living thing involves chemistry.
Though many people fail to realize it, chemistry is a subject essential to everyday life, due to the fact that it is the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed. But what we must understand is that everything in the universe is composed of matter, hence chemistry is necessary in learning more about the world and universe that we live in. There are many careers and fields affiliated with chemistry that people pursue to learn more about the composition of the universe, but for now, let us examine the logistics of three of these careers. These three careers involving chemistry are geochemistry, environmental chemistry, and chemical engineering.
Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
Science and Technology has been around from the beginning of time. It evolved from the everyday efforts of people trying to improve their way of life. Throughout history, humankind has developed and utilized tools, machines, and techniques without understanding how or why they worked or comprehending their physical or chemical composition. Before we go any further a definition has to be given for both Science and Technology because they are both different in their own right even though the two are almost indistinguishable. According to the Oxford Dictionary Technology can be defined as the knowledge or use of the mechanical arts and applied sciences, while Science can be defined as the branch of knowledge involving systematized observation and experiment. Science can be further divided into three separate categories; Pure, Applied and Natural Sciences. In addition technology is often defined as applied science, it is simply the application of scientific knowledge to achieve a specific human purpose, however, historical evidence suggests technology is a product of science.
