Bayerische Motoren Werke, also known as BMW, was founded in 1916 on the seventh day of March in Munich, Germany (BMW). Before BMW actually became “BMW”, the company went by the name of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, before the famous BMW name that is widely recognized around the world today was introduced. Back when BMW first opened up it didn’t specialize in automobiles but in flying machines! Back in 1913, Karl Friedrich Rapp was a German airplane engineer who worked for a German airplane company, and also formed Rapp Motoren Werke in a suburb somewhere near Munich, Germany ( FantasyCars). This company focused on manufacturing airplane engines, Rapp soon discovered that the engines that were being manufactured were extremely problematic and suffered a great financial loss, the company eventually went under and out of bsuiness (Fantasycars). Another well known airplane engineer named, Gustav Otto, opened up his own shop named Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik. Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik and Rapp Motoren Werke later merged together to form, Bayersiche Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works) which is the BMW that is formally known as today (fantasy). This merge was favorable for both parties because of how much success these two companies have been and still are today. BMW produced its first airplane engine in 1917, which was the 6 cylinder Type 3a model, this model set a record (for altitude) of 9,760 metres (Fantasy). Since the Treaty of Versailles was enforced in the same year, it prohibited that all manufacturing of BMW airplane engines from being built, soon enough it went out of business and the company converted to the construction of air brakes for trains (fantsy). Profits continued to grow up quickly. By 1995, BMW had thirty-four wholly owned subsidiaries, fourteen in Germany and twenty around the world.
