The starry night sky is a vast and beautiful realm that appears every night. It has fascinated humanity since the dawn of time. Coupled with our wonderful gifts of creativity and imagination, the night sky was our ultimate canvas and perhaps the oldest storybook. The sky has provided a place for us to draw mythical creatures and commemorate epic heroes. Our first record of the constellations date to approximately 6000 years old and were written in cuneiform (Coder, 2012). These texts were found in the valley of the Euphrates River and are simple constellations of animals (Coder, 2012). The question is why? It could be that human brain often seeks patterns in randomness. That humanity will see images in the sky to help our brains deal with the unorganized nature of the universe. However, I feel that this sells humanity short. The constellations are much more than the brain grabbing patterns and creating something it recognizes. These groupings of stars and stellar objects now hold our history. We have been passing along the stories of the constellations for thousands of years. After all, the sky is the perfect medium. It can store pictures and help tell stories and lessons that have lasted throughout time. As a small girl I remember vividly the Legend of the Dipper. How the little girl, in search of water for her ill mother, was compassionate on her journey. For her compassion she was rewarded and a reminder of this compassion is fixed in the night's sky (Bennett & Hague, 1995). I never forgot the story, or its message. How could I? That diamond encrusted dipper appears in the sky each night! It is wonderful how the constellations reach across time, culture, and beliefs. The most recognizable constellations usually originate from... ... middle of paper ... ...lieve the stars guide your life and look to them for answers. Or if you just love a night gazing at the beauty of the twinkling heavens. There is no denying the amazing impact that the stars have on humanity. Works Cited "Asclepius." Wikipedia. The constellation I have chosen is Ursa Major, specifically the Big Dipper within it. Ironically, Ursa Major is my favorite because of one of its many creation stories. Ursa Major is also known as the Great Bear, and lies in the northern hemisphere. It was one of the 88 constellations first recognized by the International Astronomical Union. It is also the third largest constellation in the sky. I recognize that the Big Dipper is not a constellation, this creation story is too good to pass up sharing. I love sharing it whenever I am camping with friends and the sky is clear enough to see it. This story is of Native American orgiin.
I was born with an inherent fascination for all things celestial. Ever since I was young, I have been staring at the night sky trying to find constellations, or using my juvenile imagination to create my own. My efforts to find, view, and mentally catalogue everything the heavenly bodies have to offer has led me to employ some over-the-top measures, but the most extreme of them all might be the night I stayed awake through the wee hours of the morning to catch a glimpse of a meteor shower. Over the course of an entire year, the memory of this stupefying event is still as lucent and vivid as it was that very night so long ago.

I know that astronomy is getting more popular by the day since the comet came and all those people got killed. But that really did not have anything to do with astronomy, so I am not going to get into that. To me astronomy is really cool. If you have a telescope and it is a clear night you can see different constellations such as: Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Hercules, Pegasus, Perseus there are many more that is so cool. But it is even cooler to look up and see them in the sky. To do all of that you first have to be in the correct place. What you can do first is look for the north star, when you find that then you are all set. If you cannot find it just simply face north and look for the brightest star in that direction. If you still cannot find it buy a compass then hopefully you will find it. If you still cannot find it ask somebody, I made no grantee that you would find it these ways. That is really all I know about astronomy, but after this paper I bet you I will know a whole lot more.
I have never lived in an area where stars did not exist. They have always been in my reach. All that needed to be done was to step outside and look up. It all may be one atmosphere, but there are many skies out there. The sky I see in Manhattan, Kansas is not the same sky people see in Manhattan, New York City. Natural light is our history. When we look upon the stars we are looking upon ourselves. How many more suns does this universe hold? How many more Earths? The vibrant illuminations of the night sky creates a sense of peacefulness. It creates a sense of endless wonder. There is always something new to be seen. Artificial light is not all that bad. It has endless possibilities. These lights also instill wonderment to the viewer. They are a testament to human resourcefulness and ingenuity and show just how far we have come. I have always been fascinated with light, artificial and natural. Artificial light is what could be and natural light is what is already there. Both types of light need each other. Without the stars there would be no artificial light, and without city lights there would be no desire to see the stars. I believe both lights can complement each other and make one just as amazing as the
Long ago a ancient tribes used the stars to identify different gods and goddesses. Depending on what constellation that was out at night depended on what offerings needed to be made. Like the lion constellation requires a big game offering such as elk or deer and how the libra constellation requires a equal offering of metal and gems.
My belief is that the nature of our behavior is based on astronomy; hence the reason that people who share the same zodiac sign have very similar characteristics, and sometimes a combination of people with certain zodiac signs cannot get along or are very compatible. Sometimes I can tell from a person’s sign because of their behavior, and likes and dislikes. Learning more about astrology and the zodiac signs helps us to understand people and their actions. Many argue that it is coincidence, but the odds are too high to be that.
A brush of wind comes whistling through the forest, the trees quivering from the cold as wolves rush away towards safety as a low, tempting roar broke through the small patch of land. Four paws slammed against the ground, tail swatting back and forth as men come to fight the large, reptilian brute who bares not only a flaming breath, but wings to give it flight. Dragons are known in every belief and no matter where one has lived, they know about some sort of form of the mythological beast. From European to Japanese, it seems as if everyone has their own story for the creatures of scales. It’s not just in culture though, it’s also in religion and with that, it only makes the views on these ever changing characters of fiction seem so different from each other in so many places.
For centuries, people from all latitudes have been fascinated by the night sky. The unreachable stars, the Moon, the comets and all the events happening in the sky, fired up imaginations and became symbols of life and death, of war, peace and the passing of time and the seasons. The movement of the stars was used to establish the time for planting and harvesting, to prepare for the long winters and to try to discover the future and destiny, the eternal unknown destiny of the human race. Three large human groups, the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Zapotecs populated the Central and Southeastern regions of Mexico long before the discovery of the continent by Columbus. These ancient cultures developed a very complex knowledge of Astronomy and built a large number of structures destined to be used as observatories. They made precise measurements and kept records of all the important events in the skies. This paper will explore some of the most important discoveries of these ancient astronomers and the precision of the alignments of their buildings. It will also establish the importance the astronomical knowledge had in their lives and societies.
Human fascination with the stars is as ancient as Babylonians and has been suggested to be older than Stonehenge. From “be fruitful and multiply” to “live long and prosper,” the instinct to protect and propagate the species has manifested in religion, art, and the imaginations of countless individuals. As human understanding of space treks out of the fantastical and into the scientific, the realities of traveling through and living in space are becoming clearer. Exploring, investigating, and living in space pose an expansive series of problems. However, the solutions to the problems faced by mankind's desire to reach beyond the horizon, through the night sky, and into the stars are solutions that will help in all areas of life on Earth.
Constellations were easily visible to ancient civilizations and thus they were able to make out very clearly constellations. They started naming these constellations as common practice because they believed in more than one deity that was usually connected to nature in some way/shape/form because they used this to explain natural events, including the constellations. In particular, many cultures named constellations based on different myths by mapping the shape of said constellation. To these less advanced civilizations, the stories told about constellations made sense and that’s why they were given names and distinctly mapped, when a certain constellation was at a certain point in the sky it meant something very important to different cultures.
One Greek myth story based on the stars is The Pleiades. This story is about Atlas’ 7 daughters; Electra, Maia, Taygete, Alcyone, Merope, Celaeno, and Sterope. Orion was always chasing after them and they were always running away. Zeus put them in the stars, in an attempt to save them from Orion, “But it was said that even there orion continued his pursuit , always unsuccessful, yet persistent,” (Mythology 439). This story refers to the origin of a particular constellation. It also explains why the stars move across the sky in a specific direction. Another story that helps explain something in the stars is Callisto. In this tail, Zeus sees a wolf lady and he falls in love with her. Hera gets upset and turns her into a bear so her son will kill her, “But Zeus snatched the bear away and placed her among the stars, where she is called Great Bear,” (Mythology 429). This was also used to explain where the, “Great Bear,” constellation came from. These and many other beautiful constellations with really interesting stories can still be seen

One thing us as humans have never been able to fully understand is astronomy. Always having an unexplained mystery, astronomy also has served as a way to keep time and predict the future. The word “astronomy” is defined as the study of heavenly bodies, meaning anything in the sky such as stars, galaxies, comets, planets, nebulae, and so on. Many people, if not everyone, is amazed by the night sky on a clear, moonless night.
