The Cheyenne Tribe of native american indians are one of the most well known tribes in the plains. Originally in the 1600’s the Cheyenne Tribe lived in stationary villages in the east part of the country. They would rely on farming to make money and to feed their family. The Cheyennes occupied what is now Minnesota. In the 1700’s the Cheyennes migrated to North Dakota and settled on a river. The river provides a source of fresh water and many animals would go there so hunting would be easier.In 1780 a group of indians called the “Ojibwas” forced them out and they crossed the Missouri River and followed the buffalo herd on horseback. In return the indians were befriended by the United States Government. Also in this treaty it gave the government the right to build roads and have military posts within their land. In return the government will protect the indian land. In 1887 the general allotment act was put into place. The general allotment act divided up the land on the reservations and was divided for individual indians. The goal of this was to make the indians into individual land owners and farmers so they can assimilate into white society. Over 90 million acres of land were taken from the indians. For a long period of time the Cheyenne tribe followed the buffalo. When the buffalo would migrate so would they. They used all parts of the buffalo for various things that helped them survive. They made their villages easy to pack up incase the herd left. The Women would attract the buffalo with colorful blankets when the men would shoot the buffalo with a bow and arrow. The women would do the cooking in the Cheyenne tribe. The main vegetables they would cook were corn, squash and beans. Their main sources of meat were buffalo and deer. They would make tools out of the bones of the animals they killed as well as make coats with the skin and fur. Most of the women wore animal skin skirts. About this time the government and the Indian reformers tried to turn Indians.
As the frontier moved west, white settlers wanted to expand into territory, which was the ancestral land of many Indian tribes. Although this had been going on since the administration of George Washington, during the administration of Andrew Jackson the government supported the policy of resettlement, and persuaded many tribes to give up their claim to their land and move into areas set aside by Congress as Indian Territory. In 1830, Congress passed the Indian Resettlement Act, which provided for the removal of Indians to territory west of the Mississippi River. While Jackson was President, the government negotiated 94 treaties to end Indian titles to land in the existing states.
In 1830, the United States Government passed the Indian removal Act. This act called for Eastern Indians to be moved West to make room for white settlers. The Government then forced the Choctaw to sign the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek.

It was decided that the nation had new and growing needs and aspirations, one of these being the idea of “Manifest Destiny”. Its continuous growth in population began to require much more resources and ultimately, land. The government started off as simply bargaining and persuading the Indian tribes to push west from their homeland. The Indians began to disagree and peacefully object and fight back. In the 1830's the Plains Indians were sent to the Great American Deserts in the west because the white men did not think they deserved the land. Afterwards, they were able to live peacefully, and to follow their traditions and customs, but when the white men found out the land they were on were still good for agricultural, or even for railroad land they took it back. Thus, the white man movement westward quickly begun. This prospect to expand westward caused the government to become thoroughly involved in the lives of the Plains Indians. These intrusions by the white men had caused spoilage of the Plains Indians buffalo hunting styles, damaged their social and cultural lives, and hurt their overall lives. The lives of the Plains Indians in the second half of the nineteenth century were greatly affected by the technological development and government actions.

Deloria defines the relationship between the US Government and the Indians as paternalistic. The US Government treated and governed the Indians as a father would by providing basic needs but without given them rights. There has been some improvement with the Indian Reorganization Act in 1934. This act allowed the return to local self-government on a tribal level and restored the self management of their assets. By allowing the Indians to self govern it encouraged an economic foundation for the inhabitants of Indian reservations. Unfortunately only a few tribes have fully taken advantage of this Act, while others struggle for survival.
The Indian Act is made up from the Gradual Civilization Act of 1857 and the Gradual Enfranchisement Act of 1869. The Gradual Civilization Act encouraged the Indian people to give up their status and become a Canadian citizen. The Gradual Enfranchisement Act gave the government full control over the Indian people. They were able to decide everything from who kept their status, received benefits, and even who were able to keep their children. In 1876, these acts together alongside with other rules and regulations formed the Indian Act. The government thought it was best to be able to control every aspect of the First Nations people’s lives. It was stated in annual report of the Department of the Interior Indian Affairs in 1876:
The treaty was an agreement that the chiefs had to sign to agree that they will move to the new Indian Territory. But not too many chiefs signed the treaty and it ended up having very little support. From the article by Joan Marshall, it showed how the treaty was weak and barely had any support. Especially when it talked about how only a little percent of Indians actually agreed with the treaty and moved on their own. Also from the PBS article, it states that just because the Indians did not move, the U.S. had to send thousands of army troops to escort them out of the territory. The U.S. had to send thousands of troops because a lot of Indians stayed and disagreed with the treaty. Unlike the people that agrees with the act not being passed, others may think that the Indians that did move were better off without the Americans. That way, they can be under their own government and create a new agricultural economy. But, going back to the Joan Marshall and PBS article, the people that stayed in the territory were very happy because that was their home. Also, those who stayed, did not die from hunger and diseases that were spreading around.

At first, this tribe moved from the Great Lakes region to the North Dakota area. This happened in the 1600-1700s. Also at this time, the Cheyenne were a sedentary tribe who relied on agriculture and pottery. Though, in the 1800s, they decided to abandon this lifestyle and become nomadic and move to South Dakota (Black Hills), Wyoming, and Colorado areas. No matter where the Cheyenne lived, they always kept their natural language, which was part of the Algonquin language family (Lewis). The Cheyenne tribe, like other tribes, had their own lifestyle, beliefs, and customs and also had conflicts with the whites. Even today, the Cheyenne Indians exist and are living well.
The mission of the act, stated in the first section, is to “provide in severalty to Indians on the various reservations and to extend the protection of the laws of the United States” (Dawes Severalty). Motives of providing “protection of the laws,” compelled the Indians Rights Association to support the effort, labelling it a “humanitarian reform” (Sendrow). Despite this label, the Dawes Act did not fully represent reparations because its measures ultimately benefitted whites just as much as Indians. For example, in Section 5, Dawes adds that “if in the opinion of the President it shall be for the best interests of said tribe, it shall be lawful for the Secretary of Interior to negotiate with such Indian tribe for the purchase and release” (Dawes Severalty). Although Dawes takes into account the Indians’ “best interest,” the President makes this dubious assessment that leaves room to justify seizure of land for white economic gain. Later in the section, Dawes details that the land will be doled out “in tracts not exceeding one hundred and sixty acres to any one person” (Dawes Act). There were six main sub-tribes of Sioux Indians namely the Mdewakanton, Sisseton, Teton, Wahpekute, Yankton, and the Yanktonai tribe. The Sioux were hunters, farmers, and gatherers. Their main crops included corn, berries, and fruit, while their meat diet consisted of antelope, elk, turkey, and deer. After horses became available to the Sioux in the 16th century, buffalo became their main source of food as well as clothing.They were considered nomads because they never stayed in one place for an extended period of time. The Cherokee Indians were one of the many civilized tribes in the United States. The Cherokee settled in the southeastern part of the U.S, which includes the northern parts of Georgia and Alabama, the western parts of North and South Carolina, and southwest Virginia from 1000 A.D. to 1500 A.D. and their development took place in two stages. First was the Pisgah stage which took place from 1300 A.D. to 1540 A.D. Second was the Qualla which took place 1540 A.D. to 1750 A.D. As well as in the past the Cherokees are still around today, residing around the U.S. on Indian reservations. The main focus will be Cherokee life including marriage, daily life, government, and war.
Many people today know the story of the Indians that were native to this land, before “white men” came to live on this continent. Few people may know that white men pushed them to the west while many immigrants took over the east and moved westward. White men made “reservations” that were basically land that Indians were promised they could live on and run. What many Americans don’t know is what the Indians struggled though and continue to struggle through on the reservations.
