Arena Football League (AFL)
Introduction
Arena football is played on a smaller field than that of the NFL leading to more action packed games. The AFL may not be as big of a league as the NFL but still finds a way to generate fans. The Arena Football League uses its unique set of rules to differ itself from other organizations such as the NFL or NCAA football. The AFL has had its share of ups and downs as it has struggled to keep teams in the league but hasn’t collapsed yet as it continues to host games during the spring. The league has found a way to survive by changing the rules of football, making their games more affordable to watch, and providing great entertainment throughout their games.

History Mary Bellis, the author of “History of Football” provides a lot of background information about the sport of football. She states that the sport of football was developed and modeled after the game of rugby and began in the year 1879. Bellis also states that Walter Camp created rules to change the rugby and soccer into American football. She explains that Walter Camp was responsible for many rule changes to the sports of rugby and soccer which lead to the creation of American football. Mary Bellis then brings up some of the rules Walter camp created such as the line of scrimmage and the creation of certain positions such as quarterback (Bellis, N/A). Marc Bona, The author of “How Arena Football was created, why it endures: A look at Jim Foster’s invention”, also looks at the history of how Arena Football got its start. Bona states that Jim Foster thought of the idea in the year 1981 when he was at indoor soccer game. According to Bona, Jim Foster thought that since soccer could be played indoors so could football. Randy Snow, the author of “Arena Football vs. Indoor Football” provides some input on these rule changes. Snow brings up that the most unique part of Arena Football is the rebounding nets that are behind the goal posts. He states that these nets keep the ball in play on kickoffs, extra points, and bad passes making the game more interesting. Snow also brings up the field size with is half as long as NFL fields which leads to higher scoring games and more action (Snow, 2012). Alicia DelGallo, author of “Celebrity owners attracted to Arena Football League” also brings up something that is also quite interesting. DelGallo brings up how some big time celebrities are becoming interested in owning an Arena Football League team. She mentions that Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have recently purchased a team known as the LA KISS. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are a part of the band KISS which is one of the most well-known bands ever. She brings up other celebrities that have been a part of the Arena Football League which include Jon Bon Jovi and member of the Motley Crue, Vince Neil. DelGallo states that having these celebrities as owners could help add attention and draw in more fans (DelGallo, 2014).
