When Charles Lazarus opened a furniture store for babies in 1948, he never dreamed it would turn into one of the biggest selling toy stores in the world. Charles named the store Children’s Bargain Town. As time passed, Charles added additional items, such as baby products, tricycles, books and toys for older children. Noticing that toys break and go out of style, Charles played upon this and added more toys to his stores. Nine years later in 1957, he opened a second store and decided to rename the chain, Toys “R” Us since the previous name would not fit on the sign.
Imposing even when not in motion, monster trucks of today are high-octane mechanisms of mayhem. The evolution of these arena-filling creations garners great interest within the auto culture, given the capacity for performance today’s formidable monster trucks possess. Modified trucks emerged as sideshow entertainment, but today the industry’s grandest machines fill some of the nation’s most sizable venues with their gravity-defying feats, as families marvel at the bedlam on display when truck capabilities are put to the test.

of the sessions familiar to put their client at ease. As discussed previously, impairment in social functioning causes difficulty in communication which is necessary in typical counseling interventions. According to Woods, Mahdavi, and Ryan (2013), Lego therapy, a type of play therapy, is highly effective in improving social skills between pairs or small groups of children aged 6-11. Legos are an appealing toy to children with ASD as they are a methodical and predictable toy that are easy to control. Therapists are also faced with the difficulty of ASD children regulating emotions and behavior, which is often a typical reason parents seek therapy for their child in the first place (Samson, Hardan, Lee, Phillips, & Gross, 2015). It is encouraging
Polly Pocket German series was first designed by Chris Wiggs in 1983 for his daughter Kate. Using a powder compact, he fashioned a small house for the tiny doll. Bluebird Toys of Swindon, England licensed the concept and the first Polly Pocket toys appeared in stores in 1989. Mattel held a distribution arrangement with Bluebird Toys for Polly Pocket items in the early-1990s. In 1998, while production lulled, Bluebird Toys endured several hostile take-over attempts until Mattel finally purchased them later that year.

Conformity is especially prevalent in The Lego Movie because it plays on the fact that, while Legos can be used with creativity, they are generally very instruction oriented (e.g. instruction booklets for every lego set). As stated by Joel Arnold, an NPR movie reviewer, “there's an instruction manual for everything, and Emmet eats, watches and says exactly what he's supposed to. The instructions say that's how you fit in, make friends, lead a happy life”. While obviously, this is exaggerated conformity, the conformity seen among the Lego construction workers in the beginning of the film is somewhat realistic, and can be compared to conformity found in any workplace or
Some of the most popular toys today came from Mattel Inc. Handler her husband and partner Elliot Matt created this organization having no idea what would come out of it. Shortly after Barbie’s first debut, Mattel was pushed to the top of the toy making industry. “Since her "birth," approximately 1 billion Barbie’s have been sold in four decades, making Handler's "child" the bestselling fashion doll in every major global market.” (Karen). The Barbie brand is valued at over 2 billon dollars making it the most successful of all time. Every year between 150-200 different Barbie’s are put on the market making this product one of the longest lasting ever. It is amazing how one invention could turn into such an icon. Another invention of Handler’s which is far less popular but still just as important, was her line “nearly me”. Handler was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1970 inspiring her to create a line of breast prosthesis. “Unable to find a satisfactory arti...

The Rubik's cube has haunted peoples nightmares for decades. When it was first made, it was supposed to have “billions” of combinations though it actually has over 43 quintillion combinations (43,252,003,274,489,856,000 to be exact). Originally created to help students understand geometric concepts and 3D space the first wooden model was made in 1974 by Ernö Rubik and a couple of friends. After some time playing with it, Ernö realized he didn't know how to get it back to its original form. He reportedly said, “It was wonderful, to see how, after only a few turns, the colors became mixed, apparently in random fashion. It was tremendously satisfying to watch this color parade. Like after a nice walk when you have seen many lovely sights you decide to go home, after a while I decided it was time to go home, let us put the cubes back in order. And it was at that moment that I came face to face with the Big Challenge: What is the way home?”.
The LEGO Group organization is famous due to its flagship product – colourful plastic bricks that can be interlocked to form a variety of figures, and then disconnected again. These binding bricks originated in a wooden form when the company was first established in Billund, Denmark by Kirk Kristiansen in 1932 (The LEGO Group, 2012), and today’s well known plastic version was introduced in 1958 (Rosenberg). The company’s head office is located in Billund to this day, and The LEGO Group remains privately owned by Kristiansen’s family (The LEGO Group, 2012). They currently sell toys and teaching materials in over 130 countries worldwide.
Legos are the multi-colored blocks we used as children to build creations that were only limited by our imaginations. I remember adding to my multi-colored plastic sculptor, each block putting me one step closer to the final product. The process would always entail first setting up a strong foundation, and then creating structural support, while always having a plan in the back of my mind. The outcome of which, would tower above me; to think it all began with a single block. In many ways people are similar to Legos. We are the combination of our experiences, each adding to our personas, and shaping how we view the world. Also like Legos, to have a stable and functioning final product it must have a foundation, support and a plan. I was able to establish my foundation in high school.
