Harris County Courthouse
Courthouses are a major part of a counties government system. The first thing that comes to mind when we think of a courthouse is normally a judge and jury that is sentencing someone, but there are many things that we actually use a courthouse for. Out of all the courthouses that are still standing in Texas I chose to research about the largest courthouse in Texas.
John Richardson Harris was the founder of Harrisburg. During the Texas Revolution most of Harrisburg was destroyed by the forces of Santa Anna. After the Revolution ended, Houston was founded west of Harrisburg and named the county seat of Harrisburg County and capital of the Republic of Texas. Later on Harrisburg County was shortened to Harris County after the city of Harrisburg was destroyed. The county seat was moved to Houston in 1837 and this is where the courthouse was built for one reason of Houston being a “lively commercial atmosphere”. There were five courthouses in Houston that all occupied the same plot of land that was selected by the founders of Houston, the Allen brothers. The fifth courthouse built was the one that is still used today, started construction in 1909 and was completed that next year in 1910. “Since its official opening on November 15,1910, and dedication on Texas Independence Day on March 2,1911, the Harris County 1910 Courthouse has symbolized strength, justice, good government, and security. The Harris County courthouse is exactly located at the corner of Congress and San Jacinto Street. The address is 49 San Jacinto St #303 Houston, Texas.
The Harris County courthouse was designed by Charles Erwin Barglebaugh. He was an architect from Dallas who ...

The Harris County courthouse is a beautiful and historic building in the heart of downtown Houston. With courthouses being a very important monument for the counties they are also valuable pieces of history that we can learn many things from. After the renovation of the Harris County courthouse the history of the courthouse is going to increase so much more in my opinion. Without John Richardson Harris and the Allen brothers the city of Houston and Harris County would not be what it is today.
In 1970, Mrs Harry Clark Boden IV led the building of a replication of the church as a tribute to the early settlers in the area, especially to their ancestors who first ran the Clark's ferry. The contractor was a Mr. Charles Shirey who came from Birdboro and the project cost about $40,000. In 1994, a Mrs. Adele Fox gave a generous donation to help to restore the church. The outside was given a chemical preservation treatment and the inside was white washed and there today it still stands.
In the town of Santa Rosa California, in the county of Sonoma sits a very run down structure in need of either reconstruction or preservation of the remaining structure. Whether they reconstruct the structure or not, it is a prime example of a structure to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. This building is called the Carrillo Adobe and was owned by a woman by the name of Maria Ygnacia de Carrillo. However the site and part of the structure was constructed before Maria Carrillo moved to the area which would later become Santa Rosa, California and constructed the first structure in the town. The foundation was laid by monks of the Franciscan order, as they planned to build the twenty-second mission in California. However the monks moved on to build a mission in the surrounding area. In 1837 Carrillo, who had just become a widow, moved from San Diego County with her children to the area, which was not yet known as Santa Rosa.
The interesting history of the capitol building begins back in 1810. This is when Harrisburg was named the new capital city of Pennsylvania (“CPC Home Page”). Since then, three buildings have sat upon Harrisburg’s Capitol Hill. Local architect, Stephen Hills, was chosen to design the first building. In 1819, Hills began to construction on the structure. The building was completed in 1822, and cost a total of $135,000. The first capitol building existed for seventy-five years, until a fire destroyed it in 1897 (“Capitol”).

Texas was never a big empty space. The Spaniards and later the French who came here discovered cultures that were centuries old. But history, and the museum itself, begins with European colonization. The history of Texas, one of the signs says, was shaped by the way the different groups of people who came to Texas responded to the land and to each other. So land, and interaction between different groups of people, would be used a lot in the telling of this story of Texas, I assumed.
Harvey Leroy Sossamon III was denied the ability to use the prison chapels, in the state prison in which he was being held (Oyez.org). Sossamon had been in the Robertson Unit of the Correctional Institutions Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice since 2002 (Fasoro). His claims for use were that of religious purposes, the state prison warden in fact denied all inmates that were cell restricted access to such activities. Sossamon was entitled to the use the chapel, in fact it was in his rights. However the prison inmates were provided with different ways and places to practice their religion. Regardless Sossamon explained that the alternatives were absent of Christian symbol. In fact Sossamon witnessed Muslim inmates receive better treatment (Findlaw.com). This came in the forms of treatment, meals and other necessities. Sossamon also added that the alternatives were noisy from the exterior and unfit for religious worship due in part to bad conditions (Fasoro). Sossamon also confirmed if the inmates did not cease prayer when ordered by the guards they were subjected to retaliation or other physical mistreatment (Findlaw.com).Sossamon to advantage of his Secular activity time and began to study the law. Finally when the inmates were on lockdown, could not participate in religious activities but could still participate in schedule secular activities (Fasoro).
Not only was it Texas's major port, but unfortunately it was the Unions major target resulting in a Federal Naval assault. during the first year of the Civil War. Knowing the importance of Galveston to Texas, Federal troops in 1862. took the port and surrounding areas thus making it one of only a handful of Union victories in the Lone Star state. Fearful of losing their "property", many slave owners in the areas surrounding Galveston, fled the area into the North of Texas to avoid any clashes with Union troops.
He spent most of the year 1837 in Georgia being feted as a hero and publicizing the new republic. Upon his return to Texas, he organized the Philosophical Society of Texas on December 5, 1837, and found that his campaign for the presidency of Texas was already under way, sponsored by opponents of President Sam Houston, who by law could not succeed himself. At his inauguration on December 10, 1838, Lamar declared the purposes of his administration to be promoting the wealth, talent, and enterprises of the country and laying the foundations of higher institutions for moral and mental culture. Sam Houston matters to Texas because he received the two cannons named Twin Sisters at the plantation just a few days before the Battle of San Jacinto, and was a Great leader, war hero, and one of the founding fathers of Texas.Sam Houston Joined the military and eventually served as a governor of
William Barrett Travis, the leader of the Texan defenders requested for help and his requests were ultimately not met much to his frustration. The spirits of the defenders as well as Travis however still kept strong through their commitment to their cause as well as their faith in God. In the end however, Santa Anna’s forces ended up taking over the fort and as a result of their unwavering belief for their independence all the men that fought within the battle were all killed. And so, after March 6th, 1836 the Battle of the Alamo came to a close. As of now, the Alamo serves as a tourist spot and a reminder of the Texan struggle for independence that, as per Sam Houston’s wishes, will be
The first mission built in Texas was Corpus Christi de la Ysleta. This mission was built in 1682 and built east of today's El Paso. Because it was out in the mountains and basins region of Texas, the weather must have been very harsh. Priests at this mission had been escaping from an Indian uprising in New Mexico. This mission was the first permanent European settlement built in Texas. Around this time La Salle's fort had also been built.
Our government here in Texas has three major parts that play a significant part in our decision making process. These levels have been deigned to decentralize power and make it more affective for the public's needs. The primary level is the Texas legislature. It is almost a given to say that everyone has at least heard of the legislature. Some variables that the legislature contains are the Lt. Governor, the Speaker of the house of Representatives and Committee Chairs. The Speaker acts as the presiding officer over the house and has two levels of power. These two levels are institutional powers which allow the officer to preside over the Legislative Audit Committee and Sunset Advisory Committee.
The largest trial court in Texas is the district courts, which often have general jurisdiction over a broad range of civil cases and criminal. Some district court specializing in a certain field, such as juvenile or family law. There is also the county judge, county court (and charter county court at law), probate court as prescribed by law, the justices of peace, and municipal court.
Some people may say that old buildings are just a waste of space. That select group of people have not seen the magic of turning an eyesore of a building into a true masterpiece. This magic has occurred to the Connellee Hotel in Eastland, Texas. The transformation from an abandoned hotel that was opened back in the late 1920’s to the center that now holds banquets, proms, and weddings is truly astonishing and should be appreciated. The Connellee Hotel is a perfect example of why old buildings should be preserved and not destroyed.
