INTRODUCTION
Cuba has got a history of revolutions and coups. In the current scenario it’s one of the world’s remaining socialist states with Communist governments. Despite excess pressure and embargos from the US government Cuba, the sugar bowl of the world has export ranking of 114 out of 226 world countries and import ranking of 87. Cuba’s major exports are sugar, nickel, tobacco, fish, medical products, citrus, coffee and imports includes products like food, fuel, clothing and machinery. Most of the means of the production are owned and managed by the government and majority of the labor is employed by the state. If any firm wishes to employ Cubans, it has to pay money to the Cuban government which in turn will pay the employees in pesos. With these facts and system in place, Cuban business environment and set up provides a unique opportunity for study.
CUBA’s HISTORY
Pre 1902 Cuba was Spanish colony , after the Spanish American War , as per the Treaty of Paris Cuba and two other colonies were ceded to USA for a sum of $20 million. On may 20, 1902 Cuba gained formal independence for USA but USA still has the right to intervene in Cuban affairs and to supervise its finance and foreign relations. Post this scenario various revolts took place in Cuba time to time, leading to political instability until 1940, when a new and progressive constitution was adopted. Batista was elected president the same year and carried out major social reforms. In 1944, Batista lost in presidential elections but he again came into power in 1952 with a military coup.

During 1958, Batista went into exile owing to the revolution by Fidel Castro. Castro began with legalization of Communist party and public trials and execution of Batista’s supporters;...

SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Education System: Cuba enjoys a very high literacy rate of 99.8 percent, the 10th highest in the world. Due to provision of free and state sponsored education at every level. Fidel Castro has installed an entirely state operated system and has banned private institutions. The school attendance has been made compulsory from the age of six to end of basic secondary education. Primary education is six year long while the secondary education is divided into basic and pre university education. The higher education is taken care by various universities, higher pedagogical institutes and polytechnic. Cuban Ministry of education operates a distance education that provides classes to farmers in rural areas.
