Historical context
The animal farm is a fairy story which uses animals on an English farm to tell the history of soviet communism.
When the Russia nation's workers and peasants, assisted by a class known as the intelligentsia, rebelled against the wealthy and powerful class of capitalist and aristocrats the communism arose. Their main point was to establish a socialist utopia based on the principles of the German economic and political philosopher Karl Marx. Marx also wrote a book called Das Kapital and in the book he argued that society would naturally evolve from a monarchy and aristocracy to capitalism and then to communism. He also mentioned that the poor workers that has been oppressed by capitalism would be restored and all the people would live as equal. Since the Russia wanted to establish a socialist utopia based on the thoughts of Karl Marx and the German economic, Russia became a communist country.
George Orwell wrote this novel to not only tell us about the politics in Russia but also the events that have occurred for instance:
1. The owner of the farm is getting run off the land because he did not treat the animals well is an allusion to Russian Revolution of 1917 that lead to the removal of the Tsar Nicholas II.
2. The Old major was the first leader of the animals in the farm but when it died two other pigs, Napoleon and Snowball, took over his spot as leader. This was based on a real event which was when Lenin died Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky jockeyed for control of the Soviet Union.
3. When Mr. Jones tried to retake the farm ''the Battle of the cowshed'' is analogous to the Russian Civil war.
4. When Napoleon chased away Snowball with his secret weapons is like Stalin's removal of Leon Trotsky in 19...

...te and brainwash its citizens is also another message that can be found. In this story there is one pig, Squealer, who spread Napoleon's propaganda among the other animals in order to make Napoleon look better in the animals eyes. Together with Napoleon they also changed the history and the commandments in order to suit their increasing power. Since Squealer was a good speaker managed to manipulate and brain wash the other animals for instance, Snowball who was the hero of the battle of the cowshed became a betrayer because of the change of history and propaganda.
The other messages of the book are corruption of revolution by its leaders, be aware of history, people should not only sit back and accept everything the government do they should stand up for their rights and needs and people should question the government's decision and be aware of what it is doing.
George Orwell’s animal farm is an allegory about communist Russia and the Russian revolution. Animal farm represents communist Russia through animal farm. Some of the themes Orwell portrays throughout the story of animal farm are lies and deceit, rebellion and propaganda through the characters and the story of animal farm.
The uneducated are often unaware of how people take advantage of them when under the power of a leader using propaganda. Propaganda is an opinionated advertisement used to control and appeal to people's judgement and emotions, and gets them to do what they want (Stults). Not all persuasion is propaganda, and not all propaganda is bad (Stults). George Orwell writes Animal Farm as an allegorical fable associated with Lenin’s lead over the revolution that established the Communist control of Russia. After the animals of Animal Farm are successful with the Rebellion against Jones, they to lose sight of how the pigs are slowly influencing them. The main themes in Animal Farm leadership and corruption. Animal Farm portrays the history of the Russian Revolution by retelling the development of communism. In the novel, by overthrowing Mr. Jones, the animals give the power to the pigs who take complete control of the farm. The struggle for superiority between Leon Trotsky, a Russian revolutionary, and Stalin, a Soviet statesman, is portrayed by the rivalry between the pigs, Napoleon and Snowball. In both cases, the less powerful one, Trotsky and Snowball, is eliminated by the more superior one, Stalin and Napoleon. Stalin's rule and abandonment of the founding principles of the Russian Revolution are portrayed when the pigs adopt human traits and behaviors, which they originally tried to escape. “Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from ...
In Orwell’s novel the farmer Mr. Jones based on the old ruler of Russia Tsar Nicholas the II (who ruled from to 1868-1918), the last true leader of an aristocratic Russia. His reign was marked by his constant demonstrations of absolute rule to show he was the true ruler of the nation. During his reign, the Russian people experienced horrinle atrocities such as mass hunger and violence which culminated in an upheaval, known as the Bloody Sunday massacre that occurred 1905 when an unarmed mob of workers and peasants demanded more food, social reforms and freedom but were answered with shots fired by the army near Tsar Nicholas' palace. This was represented in Orwell’s novel when the animals under Jones rule were forced to live lives of starvation and misery; this was similar to the countless lives that suffered under Nicholas' rule. When Russia joined World War I and lost the most men of any country, the people of Russia were outraged and began a series of rebellions against The Tsars control. The Tsar’s own generals left him and after that, Tsar Nicholas gave up his thr...
Basically, in a nutshell, Animal Farm is a novel about farm animals triumphing over man only to fall prey to an evil and cunning dictator. It is a cleverly weaved story with surprising and sad events. But, if you have ever seen the movie version of Animal Farm, you would feel completely different about the story. Even though the movie gives a visual interpretation of Animal Farm, it doesn't quite sum up to Animal Farm, the novel.
Old Major (a boar) gathers the animals of the manor farm together for a meeting in the barn. He tells all of them of the dream he had. That all animals lived together in a community with no humans to take control of them. He tells them that they must work towards this paradise and teaches them a song called "Beasts of England" in which his dram was described. When he dies, (3 days later), the two younger pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, make his principles into a philosophy called animalism. One night the animals manage to defeat Mr. Jones (the farm owner) in a battle and ran him off the farm.

Orwell depicts one such powerfully effective propaganda technique through Squealer’s duplicitous storytelling: revisionist history. As Napoleon began to go against the original commandments and reserve luxuries for the pigs, it became necessary to cover up his actions, which went against the very idea of Animalism. “’Are you certain that this is not something you have dreamed, comrades?... Is it written down anywhere?’ And since it was certainly true that nothing of the kind existed in writing, the animals were satisfied that they had been mistaken” (Orwell 77). When Napoleon decided to engage in trade amongst the humans, many animals recalled the resolutions passed against such human contact, which planted a seed of doubt. Not allowing the seed to germinate, Squealer quickly assured them th...
The animals were on an emotional high for the next few days. They set up rules, including the seven commandments, and decided to make Snowball and Napoleon (pigs) the leaders. The animals had meetings every Sunday to discuss and vote on what should happen, and the work schedule for the following week. Every single time an idea was brought up Snowball and Napoleon would disagree. This went on for a year. Finally, at one of the meetings Napoleon and 9 dogs jumped Snowball, and chased him off of the farm. From then on the farm became a dictatorship, not a republic as the animals had dreamed of before the rebellion. Napoleon lied to the animals a lot, but none of them were smart enough to realize it. He planted false memories in the animals heads, and manipulated them. He stole food from them and blamed it on Snowball. Then he started to go against the seven commandments, but none of the animals could remember the seven com...
This essay will cover the comparison between Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution. It will also explain why this novel is a satire and allegory to the Revolution that took place in Russia so long ago. First and foremost, Manor Farm itself represents Russia with its poor conditions and irresponsible leaders. Mr. Jones plays one of those leaders, Nicholas the Second or The Czar as people called him in those days. Mr. Jones beats his animals, forgets to feed them, and treats them badly.

Pigs walking on two feet, horses and sheep talking. This is how George Orwell satirizes human nature in his classic novel Animal Farm. Animal Farm is an allegory of the Russian Revolution of 1917. The title of the book is also the setting for the action in the novel. The animals in the story decide to have a revolution and take control of the farm from the humans. Soon the story shows us how certain groups move from the original ideals of the revolution to a situation where there is domination by one group and submission by all the others. The major idea in this story is the political corruption of what was once a pure political ideal. Orwell uses satire to ridicule human traits in his characters such as Napoleon and Squealer. There are several different characters in the novel utilizing animals as symbols of people in real life during the Russian Revolution. Napoleon is the leader of the pigs that ultimately come to dominate the farm. The characteristics that we associate with pigs , lazy, greedy, and pushy are meant to symbolize the characteristics that the leaders of the Russian Revolution exhibited. Napoleon is admired by all of the animals because he is their leader. All of the animals believe that their leader wants to fulfill all of their needs. They also are convinced that Napoleon’s decisions are made the best interest of the animals. Napoleon’s piglike qualities are shown throughout the story. He exhibited greediness when he sold the dying horse, Boxer to a slaughterhouse for money so that he and the other pigs could purchase whiskey. Orwell ridicules human nature through Napoleon in the sense that he is trying to show how the greedy and power hungry eventually end in corruption.
Animal Farm is an allegory of the period in Russian history between 1917 and 1944. It is a satirical story written in the form of an animal fable. In writing Animal Farm as a fable, George Orwell is able to present his subject in simple symbolic terms by treating the development of communism as a story that is taking place on a single farm with talking animals. The characters of Animal Farm represent figures in Russian history during the Russian Revolution. Places, objects, and events of the Russian Revolution are also symbolized in Animal Farm.
In order to secure a life of luxury for Napoleon and his fellow pigs, Napoleon( with Squealer as his spokesman) use language that intimidates, distorts the truth, and that appeals to the emotion of the others to manipulate the gullible animals of Animal Farm. Squealer uses different forms of languages to get something or to make the animals work harder. In the end the pigs start to become like humans and even walk on two legs.
“When I sit down to write a book, I do not say to myself ‘I am going to produce a work of art.’ I write because there is some lie I want to expose and some fact I want to draw attention to.” George Orwell investigated themes of power, totalitarianism and leadership in relation to Marxist theories throughout his novels yet seemed to direct them at a range of audiences. Investigate the extent to which Orwell alters his communication of the lies he wishes to expose and how they are conveyed to the reader through literary devices. Literature is an essential part of society in the present day and enables the communication between multiple parties in a written form.
