The films that were presented to us were about World War II, and were presented to us to see if they portrayed the historical context. The first film that was presented in class was “Pearl Harbor,” the film showed about how Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the Japanese. I feel like they presented the information how it was supposed to because it showed how the Japanese had planned the attack on the naval base of Pearl Harbor. The movie also showed how it became crazy and everyone was confused on the attack, it also shows the desperation of the people. The movie overall did portray the historical context of the Pearl Harbor attack. The second movie presented was “Red Tails” it was mainly about how the African Americans were discriminated

The Attack on Pearl Harbor Shapes American History “Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy. . .” These famous lines were spoken the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave this speech to the U.S. Congress on December 8, 1941. Many criticized the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, but the decision to attack America was wisely made. The Americans were going to enter the war sooner or later, and on the allies’ side.
“It was very apparent to everyone who had carefully followed the course of events that we would sooner or later have to meet the threat to civilization which these aggressor nations were presenting to the world…and that we would ultimately be left to face the onslaught alone…” are words from then Secretary of War Henry Stimson. America knew she was headed for war, her people though, not directly feeling the effects of the conflicts going on half a world away would not support the loss of American lives for a foreign war. The government knew about the planned attacks on Pearl Harbor, kept the information from the military leaders that needed it the most, and used the tragedy to rally the nation toward war.

It would be near insanity to say Letters from Iwo Jima constitutes an everyday war movie. Clint Eastwood not only created a film that sympathizes with the Japanese, but also acknowledges the fact that both the Japanese and Americans were wrong. The Japanese assumed Americans were cowardly fools and the Americans had been taught the Japanese were mindless imperial machines. These stereotypes are quickly cast aside as viewers of this movie acquaint themselves with Saigo and his friends. However, although this movie effectively accomplishes its goals, it still contains many inaccuracies. These errors eventually culminate to the point that the movie may seem sensationalized or even overly dramatized at points. More importantly, the cultural, geographical, and propagandized inaccuracies make it difficult to believe what Letters from Iwo Jima is trying to say; the Japanese fought even more bravely than the Americans despite what public opinion was.

Unsure of exactly what movie to watch, I looked for an interesting title on the list, hoping that one may jump out at me and interest me. I did not want to write a paper on something I had watched previously, as I did not want to have a biased opinion and I wanted to make sure I paid attention to all the details for the paper. If I had seen the movie before, I may have skipped over it or lost focus during the film. The title Born on the Fourth of July seemed patriotic and I wondered what exactly it would be about. I decided to research a synopsis of the film and realized it was about a soldier and in turn I assumed the disorder displayed in the movie would be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Knowing this is an abnormal psychology class and we were to be discussing a disorder I felt this would be a good assumption. The plot seemed okay and I knew the actors were good so I chose to view the film and decide if I could write a paper on it afterwards. In short, I enjoyed the film and thought it was a good depiction of PTSD and I decided this would be a great film for my paper.

Pearl Harbor is easily one of the most disastrous events that occurred on American soil. It was a deliberate attack against the United States from Japan. Before December 7, 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked, America had decided not to get involved in European affairs, which included the beginning of World War II. However, once the United States saw how much Britain and the Soviet Union were suffering from fighting with the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan), America felt obligated to help in some way to help without actually entering the war. Weapons, money, and food were sent over seas to help aid them in any way it could. It was very obvious that if America had entered the war, we would join the side of the Allies (Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union). The day after Pearl Harbor, Franklin D. Roosevelt approached congress and asked for a declaration of war against Japan. Pearl Harbor affected many events that occurred in World War II. Not only the United States, but the world was affected that day.
Films are necessary in our time period because the human eye can articulate the message intended through sight allowing visual imagination to occur. In the book, world 2 by Max Brooks, he creates a character by the name Roy Elliot who was a former movie director. Roy Elliot manages to make a movie titled “Victory at Avalon: The Battle of the Five Colleges” and some how it goes viral. Similarly, Frank Capra’s film, “Why we Fight” expresses a sense of understanding the meaning of wars. Films do not inevitably portray truth because they display what the film director views as important and beneficial for people to know.

By viewing these films and analyzing the underlying meanings of symbols within them, we can gain a greater understanding of history, and what was important to each of the eras these films represent.
