Hip replacement surgery replaces diseased or damaged parts of a hip joint with man made parts. Although this procedure has a high success rate, every surgery has risks and complications and this is no different. Here are some of the likely problems that may result from this procedure
Dislocation of the hip
This is one of the most common complications from this surgery. It usually takes around 3 months for the soft tissue that form the joint to completely heal. Before the muscle strength returns, the hip may dislocate especially if the patient has a weak muscle tone. If the surgeon cuts less tissue while performing the surgery, the risk of dislocation is substantially reduced. The patient is also advised to maintain certain postures in the

Patients with other underlying conditions are the ones who are most likely to develop an infection from the surgery. The doctors usually give patients antibiotics to reduce the chances of superficial, primary or late onset infection. Patients who develop any infections should be quick to report it to the doctor.
Blood clots
After the surgery, blood clots may form in the leg veins. If the clot travels to the lung it can cause a pulmonary embolism which is lethal but unlikely. If the blood clot instead forms in the leg it may lead to deep vein thrombosis. Patients are usually prescribed to anticoagulant and some exercises to prevent and manage clotting. A patient who notices clotting should immediately see the doctor.
Misalignment and Loosening of the Implant
This is common especially if the surgery is not done perfectly. This can cause wear and tear and even pain to the patient. This complication can simply be avoided by getting an experienced surgeon to perform the hip replacement. It is good to note that even an experienced surgeon may miss the mark so one needs to be prepared for all outcomes. Loosening of the implant may also be caused by poor bones or traumatic force to the hip. Loosening usually happens in the long-term. In case the patient suspects that the implant is misaligned or loosened they should ask for corrective

There is usually no pain involved except the inability to walk normally. If this happens the doctor can correct the problem by prescribing medication or using radiotherapy. This complication is quite rare if the surgery is done with precision.
Risk on the adjacent bones
If the implant is not positioned accurately, it can cause a fracture around the prosthetic stem. The prosthetic stem can also break due to extreme force or product failure. The thighbone can also fracture if the surgeon uses poor equipment or if the patient has an underlying bone condition. Any fractures caused by the surgery can easily be fixed without any harm to the hip bone.
Abnormal Reactions
Although allergies to metal implants are rare, they are still plausible. During surgery the metals used can cause tissue reactions especially if the surgery is not done correctly. The sensitivity to the metal in the implants may cause patients to develop certain symptoms such as inflammation. In other cases it may cause the hip not to heal. The patient may overlook these symptoms as they sometimes appear unrelated. Patients are therefore encouraged to report to the doctor any symptoms that they notice after surgery, however unrelated they may be. The doctor can quickly correct an allergy reaction to the
What is meant by a “complete, comminuted, intertrochanteric fracture of the right hip”? A complete, means that the bone is broken completely through a communication means that the bone has been broken into many pieces and a intertrochanteric means that it involves the greater and lesser trochanter of the femur bone.
The surgery has about a 50/50 chance of having successful outcomes in permanently keeping the Baker’s Cyst from reforming. If a Baker’s Cyst is not taken care of it can rupture and cause pain and swelling in your calf for a couple of weeks. If it ruptures it could be hard for a doctor to determine if it was a baker’s cyst or if the patient has Deep vein thrombosis in the leg. The cyst could get large enough where it will cut off blood circulation from the lower
Many factors can increase the risk of these clots, including prolonged bed rest (such as after surgery), sitting for long periods (such as on a plane), use of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, pregnancy, family history of DVT, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain genetic clotting disorders. Compression stockings are also sometimes used in people who have an acute DVT, to prevent a group of symptoms known as post-thrombotic syndrome that includes leg pain and
With ABC recipient site classification surgeons gain some insight in to regenerative potential of the surgical bed and can consider some modifications to help increasing of success rate of bone healing and decreasing morbidities of donor sites.
The hip joint is the articulation between the pelvis and the femur, characterized by the joint surface opposition of the acetabulum and the head of femur creating a synovial ball and socket joint. It is one of the largest and most stable joints in the body.
“The purpose of a doctor or any human in general should not be to simply delay the death of a patient, but to increase the person’s quality of life.” Orthopedic surgeons treat a number of conditions that affect the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and nerves. The training to become an orthopedic surgeon requires multiple years of hard work and studying, but in the end, the success is worth all the stress and struggle experienced on the way. Most doctors must dedicate every fiber of their being, countless hours of work, and years of stress in their chosen profession. Medicine is only for those who can’t imagine doing anything else.
After joining the profession of nursing, I soon came to realize that people with hip fracture are usually in the dire need of the caring nurses for their activities of daily living. For that reason, I spent significant time helping and aiding the patients that have hip fractures during my service. I remember one of my patients named John, whose upper femur was broken as the result of a fall in the bathroom. His doctor opted the Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) to repair the fracture with the help of plates, nails, screws, and pins. I provided an egg-crate mattress for this patient, keeping in view his particular condition and high pain levels.
In the end, it is all based on preference and financials. Some people may suffice with only some rehabilitation while others would require surgery and it would be in their best interest. It is a decision that should be left to both the patient and doctor. Amanda determined the most efficient way, despite what her doctors said and now she is gearing up for yet another successful soccer season as a senior.
...gs causing high pressure in the arteries; leading to an irreversible pulmonary hypertension. Other complications include, “aortic insufficiency, leaking of the valve that separates the left ventricle from the aorta; damage to the electrical conduction system of the heart during surgery causing an irregular heart rhythm; delayed growth and development; heart failure; stroke; infective endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the heart.”
A PE usually begins as a clot in a deep vein of the leg, which is called deep vein thrombosis. This clot can break and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs and block the artery. Blood clots can form in the deep veins of the legs if blood flow is restricted and slows down. This can occur when you don’t move around for long periods of time. Some examples that can cause this are some types of surgery, during a long trip in a car or airplane, and if you must stay in bed for an extended period of time. Under rare circumstances an air bubble, part of tumor, or other tissue travels to lungs and causes ...
Total Hip Replacement (THR) is a surgical procedure that relieves pain from most kinds of hip arthritis, thus helping to improve the quality of life for the majority of the patients that undergo the operation. Arthritis simply means "inflammation of a joint." Arthritis can occur in any joint in the body. The main symptom of arthritis is pain which usually worsens with activity and weight bearing. This pain may be relieved most of the time through rest. There are over 100 types of arthritis but less than a handful account for over than 95 percent of the hip replacements that are performed. Some of these include Osteoarthritis (causes deterioration of the cartilage and the growth of bone spurs), Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Doctors suggest that before considering hip replacement surgery for arthritis that the patient tries a number of non-operative interventions. Your doctor may have you consider little things such as weight loss (most arthritis is caused due to the weight bearing on a joint), activity modification or even the use of a cane. Patients should consider THR when daily living activities become harder to accomplish due to the pain. These activities would include walking, climbing stairs or other moderate pastimes. Anti-inflammatory medications which will help reduce the inflammation from the arthritis and reduce your pain may also be prescribed by the patient's doctor.
Often, the pain extends from the lower back all the way to the back of the thigh and down through the leg. Depending on where the sciatic nerve is affected, the pain may also extend to the foot or toes. For some people, the pain from sciatica can be severe and debilitating. Sciatica is not a medical emergency. However, if you experience difficulty with bowel or bladder function, decreased sensation around the genitals, or progressive leg weakness, this may be the sign of cauda equina syndrome, a medical emergency.
Hospital acquired infections are spread by numerous routes including contact, intravenous routes, air, water, oral routes, and through surgery. The most common types of infections in hospitals include urinary tract infections (32%), surgical site infections (22%), pneumonia (15%), and bloodstream infections (14%). ( book). The most common microorganisms associated with the types of infections are Esherichila coli, Enterococcus species, Staphylococcus auerus, Coagulase-negative staphylococci, or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.(secondary) Urinary tract infections occur when one or more of microorganisms enter the urinary system and affect the bladder and/or the kidneys. These infections are often associated improper catheterization technique. Surgical site infections occur after surgery in the part of the body where the surgery took place. These infections may involve the top of the skin, the tissue under the skin, organs, or blood vessels. Surgical site infections sometimes take days or months after surgery to develop. The infections can be cause by improper hand washing, dressing change technique, or improper surgery procedure. Pneumonia can also become a hospital acquired infection. Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a type of lung in...
Aim of the treatment should be to mobilize these patients early. To achieve this anatomical reduction of comminuted fracture and stable fixation by PFN will restore the neck shaft angle and preserve patients hip joint, which gives lesser pain ,patients will walk better postoperatively, thus patients can be rehabilitated better and early. Because of some demeritis of PFN, hemiarthroplasty
There is no good time to have any surgery, but these surgeries are often inevitable for those with hip dysplasia. One of the corrective
