Hillary Clinton was the embodiment of the establishment in an era of transparency when the new media has changed not just how much information the public can access but also how people think about wealth inequality and existing political power structures. Her dogged sense of entitlement and her insistence to women that the historical significance of her candidacy should galvanize them was out of sync in a generation when younger women believe gender is a fluid concept. Both younger and older women felt patronized by her appeals to their womanhood. Her strategy particularly fell flat with older women who recalled how Hillary treated Bill Clinton’s many accusers of inappropriate and even illegal behavior. Moreover, men and women alike were disturbed …show more content…
Of course, sexism played a role in the very fact that Hillary was ever a serious candidate. Imagine if Hillary Clinton had been the female equivalent of Donald Trump. Imagine that she was an overweight woman with five children by three husbands, had six bankruptcies, and a history of dodging military service. The personal lives of women are always held to higher standards by society and certainly, if Hillary was not acceptable in her role as a woman she would never have made it as far as she did. However, Hillary did qualify as an acceptable woman in the eyes of voters. In fact, she was celebrated by many for her accomplishments as a woman and therefore it was not sexism that caused her to lose the election. Perhaps there is a smattering of voters who would never vote for a woman president but not enough to be considered a significant factor in her …show more content…
Those banks never paid for what they did. Instead, the banks received a $700 billion bailout while thousands of Americans lost their homes and livelihoods without recourse. Her supporters were plagued with distress over the fact that Hillary could not account for billions of dollars in aid money which was entrusted to the Clinton Foundation. The money for Haiti was intended for relief efforts and for the rebuilding of homes and infrastructure following the devastating earthquake that killed 150,000 people, but Hillary could not properly explain where it all went. Her constituents were uncomfortable with evidence from Wikileaks which showed that FOBs (friends of Bill) received preferential treatment in business deals for Haiti. One such friend, Irish billionaire Denis O’Brien, built a luxury hotel just blocks from an area that was in critical need. Indeed, Hillary had as record that was problematic at every turn. In fact, the Clinton’s have a long record of involvement in Haiti. Other evidence from Wikileaks shows that as Secretary of State, Hillary colluded with American textile factory owners in Haiti and took aggressive actions to prevent the Haitian Parliament from passing a law that would increase the minimum pay per hour
She pushed through all the tough times, and because she did that, she was able to accomplish her goal. Twenty-six million women were able to vote because of her. No one can ignore women anymore or their problems. They are now treated like everyone else. What she did, didn’t just get women the right to vote.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is a well-recognized woman in the United States. Her great contribution as secretary of State impact people’s lives. One of many remarkable speeches Hillary gave was the “The women rights speech”, in the 4th World Conference on Women Plenary Session where she uses strong words and emotions to appeal the audience. Even though the speech talks about women rights, she wants everyone, including men and children to listen and take action. Her use of ethos, logos and pathos throughout the speech made the audience believe in her words.
Hilary Clinton impacts he audience with various ways that she explains all the abuse and torment women go through. Her diction consists of words that are horrifying and unpleasant. Such as, “violence”, “fire”, “death”, “burned”, “suffocated”, “drowned”, “greed”, “prostitution”, “rape”, etc. This use of diction creates a disgusted and harsh tone.
The goal of Hillary’s speech is to persuade her audience that her ideas are valid, by using ethos, pathos, and logos. Hillary is the First Lady and Senator, she shows credibility as an influential activist for woman rights. “Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my country and around the world” (Clinton 2).
Anthony was fighting for women’s right to vote, but also for women’s rights in general. While women have gone extremely far since Anthony gave her speech in 1873, like securing the right to vote, there are still several examples of discrimination and sexism towards women, one of the most obvious being the pay gap. In the article, “The Simple Truth About the Gender Pay Gap” by Catherine Hill, the author tells that on average, women only earn 79% of what men do. The author states, “The gap has narrowed since the 1970s (Figure 1), due largely to women’s progress in education and workforce participation and to men’s wages rising at a slower rate.” (Hill, page 1) Although many people have realized women’s role in society, making that statement true, there is still a significant gap, 21%, for men and women with the same qualifications. Additionally, there are many political disadvantages for women. According to “Women in Congress 2015”, by the Associated Press, “In 2015, 104 (76D, 28R) women hold seats in the United States Congress, comprising 19.4% of the 535 members…” (AP, page 1). This just goes to show that in what was once an all male form of leadership, after 200 years, still only 20% of Congressmen are female, and there is yet to be a female president. Despite the fact that women’s equality has no doubt grown in the form of rights, representation in the government, and wage gap, the level of discrimination is still shown through things like
When she concluded her speech, Hillary kept using the repetition of the words dignity, respect, family and children. Clinton’s credibility is not questioned when she says she has been working on the case, “Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families” (Clinton). This is the way she knows about women and their necessities, “I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my country and around the world” (Clinton). Her goal is definite, “To strengthen families and societies by empowering women to take greater control over their own destinies”( Clinton). This change will not only affect women, but everyone who surrounds them.
This paper will mainly discuss the strategies Hillary Clinton uses in an attempt to achieve her various goals. Concentrating on Hillary’s two main persuasive methods, I will look into whether or not these are honest attempts and whether or not her methods and decisions have benefited or harmed society, mainly women. In an attempt to identify with her audience, Hillary uses two main methods. One, she tries to connect with her audience, and two she uses the power of guilt to get her messages across. She uses a few techniques in order to connect with the American people.
Still, as one Republican official described her, Clinton is often viewed as “‘grating, abrasive and boastful’” (236). Generally, female candidates are expected to be “more caring, compassionate, and emotional than their male counterparts, who tend to be seen as tough, assertive, and decisive” (Bauer). This issue is common among female candidates, and this expectation has certainly impacted Clinton’s campaign. Despite her background as Secretary of State, Clinton is continually questioned by her opponents about her strength.
Haiti as a rich history, filled with many peoples’ blood and countless hopes of freedom. With such a rich history, the country has yet to become financially stable because of their past. From the beginning of the French settlement where slaves were brought over from Africa to harvest crops, to the dictatorship of the Duvalier family. Haiti has yet to see a time when they are not in need of help. After the racial caste systems were set in place, many people would not see a truly independent country. When France finally gave independence to Haiti, they did it for a price. After they paid that price, the US occupied them because of their location and many resources. Every year in Haiti’s history as a nation and before has effects on the world today. These effects are not hidden in fine print, but blatantly found within Haiti and those who have been involved with Haiti.
During her early life, Hillary Clinton learned that a huge problem across the globe was gender inequality. Women and men were not equal. Men were making more money than women for the same jobs. She believed she could change this. On September 5, 1995 Hillary Clinton gave a speech at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women. Clinton uses powerful rhetoric in order to create an air of sympathy for women among her audience. She is hoping to make the world become more aware of the inequalities women face daily while also making them feel ashamed for their previous actions of discriminating women, which would cause them to change their ways. She uses her speech “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights” to create awareness of the discrimination
We [women] are, as a sex, infinitely superior to men." Elizabeth Stanton (prominent woman suffragist) - (excerpted from One Woman, One Vote by Wheeler, pg. 58) "Frailty, thy name is woman." William Shakespeare - (excerpted from Hamlet, Act I, scene 2) This quote made by Stanton in 1890 shows many of the feministic beliefs held by the women of today. And the quote made by Shakespeare holds many of the same thoughts shared by men. The battle of the sexes is prevalent everywhere and is applicable to anything.
Yes, there were other issues such as working and labor conditions that were very different for women versus men, divorce laws that were disproportionately not in favor of women, and the inability or right to have control over their own bodies. All those being issues extremely important, but one could argue that the right to vote was the one thing that lead women further down those paths of other issues
In the 106th United States Congress (which met from 1999-2001) only 58 of the 535 legislators were women, and only 18 were women of color. As a result, laws that benefitted women faced heavy opposition before they could be passed. In addition, women made up the minority of Supreme Court justices and presidential cabinet members at every point in the 20th century, and of the 15 presidents elected in those 100 years none of them were women.... ... middle of paper ...
Throughout history, women have fought a long, hard battle to have equal rights. Men, and even some women, all over the world believe that women do not share the same value and importance to society as men do. On September 5, 1995, Hillary Clinton spoke at the 4th World Conference on Women on behalf of women all over the world. Clinton raised awareness on how women 's rights are being violated and why it is important to recognize women 's rights as equal to everyone else’s rights. Even today, in 2016, the words Clinton in 1995 spoke still impact the world. Hillary Clinton, a powerful, credible women made the world feel emotional by explaining the mental, and physical hardships that many women face everyday, and why addressing this problem
Have you ever felt discriminated against in the workplace? Usually, women are the most common people that are mistreated in the workplace. There are many reasons why women are discriminated against, but none of them are excuses for women for not being successful. Women face sexism by getting less pay than men, not getting promoted as equally as men, and facing other gender stereotypes, but sexism can be solved by women confronting their internal and external barriers and finding people that can help women.
