Ever do something stupid to impress someone? Throughout a person’s life they will do something very ignorant or say something very stupid hundreds of times. Most of the time it is because they are trying to impress somebody or change their ways to make someone or others accept them. The story “Haunting of Hill House” has great examples of people changing just to fit in. The author Shirley Jackson, who died in 1965, was one of the most brilliant writers of her time. She was widely acclaimed for her hair-raising stories and novels of the supernatural. Although the “Haunting of Hill House” fits this description perfectly with its eerie description of supernatural tales of the happenings of Hill House; there is a more to it than hauntings. The story starts out with three guests being invited to the house to monitor any out of the ordinary occurrences in Hill House. Throughout the story the guests experience some ghostly moments. However during this one of the guest named Eleanor changes her ways to fit in with the guests. Her actions show that society’s views on a person can lead that person to things they would never have thought of. One example would be when Eleanor told lies about herself and her past. Another example would be when Eleanor went around the house alone having no fear. Finally Eleanor became open and spoke out what was on her mind.
An example of society’s views on a person leading them to things they never thought of was when Eleanor became a liar and lied about her past. Today a lot of people are pressured so much by society to be a certain way they will lie about themselves to fit in with those certain people. In the story Eleanor feels that she does not fit in with the group of people who are staying at Hill House. She is a person with a lack of confidence so she feels she has to lie to feel accepted. “Theodora came through the bathroom door into Eleanor’s room; she is lovely, Eleanor thought, turning to look; I wish I were lovely.” This quote shows the lack of confidence she has. One of Eleanor’s lies was when she told the others she lived alone in an apartment. This is not true because she lives with her sister and her boyfriend in a house. The reason she told this lie was because Theo lived in an apartment with a friend so she felt Theo would not accept her.
The Horror story of “Diary Of A Haunting” was written by M. Verano. The main character is Paige. Paige is very capable of what she believes in. She also is very strong and fearless and curious about what is going on in her house. The theme of my book is “If You Have Something To Say, Say It.” I believe that Paige knew something was going on, but she was too afraid to say it because she was soon to know if her family would think shes crazy. Since she didn't say anything things got worse. I believe it is important to speak up if your know that something is wrong.
Many people everyday worry how they’ll be seen in the world. You will either be loved for being the ideal person, or live a life of shame and sorrow because you chose or have to be different than others. I believe that the theme of the story is best represented as, Don’t conform to society, allow society to conform to you. In the tragedy genre short story “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst we receive a first hand account of how cruel a society can be. Doodle died only because someone tried too hard to change someone who didn’t want as much to be changed. The opinions of society can completely alter how one’s life will play out.
Silas House is an American writer born in 1971 in Lily, Kentucky. He spent most his childhood outside playing and enjoying nature as most kids in Appalachia do. He went to Sue Bennett College, Eastern Kentucky University, and got his masters at Spalding University. He grew up and is known for his novels but also is a music journalist, environmental activist, and a columnist. The times as a kid help develop the writer his is today most his works revolve or have nature in them because it was such a big part of his life and still is. In his novel A Parchment of Leaves he takes about nature “Confluence of the Redbud Creek and the Black Banks River.” He’s a true American writer because he writes about America it’s self.
The Haunting of Hill House is a gothic horror novel written by Shirley Jackson. Supernatural occurrences take place within the house revolving around Eleanor. Eleanor is a thirty-two-year-old woman who never once has felt the sense of inclusion. Eleanor seems to never recall the feeling of delight in her adult years due to the fact that she was a caretaker for her now deceased Mother; who took away most of her freedom by being incredibly restrictive. Dr. Montague, a doctor that specializes in analysis of the supernatural rents Hill House, a supposedly haunted house. During the renting period, Dr. Montague begins an experiment inviting individuals who have had involvement in abnormal events
Society tends to encourage virtuous qualities such as kindness, patience and optimism, indeed, these are virtuous qualities that could make up potential leaders and role models. But, the irony is that in some circumstances virtues can become a hindrance not just to yourself, but the people around you as well. This happened to Aunt Burnie, a gentle caretaker of the narrator and two girls Min and Jade, in George Saunders’ “Sea Oak”. Due to burglary, Aunt Burnie’s life came to an end, but due to strange circumstances she was resurrected. This resurrection changed her completely Aunt Burnie was no longer her pleasant self but full of spite and anger due to her life experiences and her compensation in death. Though she worked hard and was complacent
This is Eleanor’s story. Another interesting point to make would be to address Eleanor’s obvious sexual orientation – and maybe the repressed identity is what causes the disturbances in the haunted house.
An example of this, in "A Good Man is Hard to Find," involves the Grandmother's strong, southern heritage. According to the article, she tells her grandchildren a story in which a watermelon is devoured by "a nigger boy (Bandy 108)." In today’s world, grandmothers are usually nice and sweet, but O’Connor’s grandmother is very manipulative, domineering women who talk way too much for her and her family’s own good. Then, the Misfit, whom she "knows" is of quality, southern blood, shoots her and her family, despite her belief in southern hospitality. The Grandmother is a woman who believes in God, but it seems that her belief isn’t strong up until her confrontation with the
Society uplifts famous individuals, causing faulty lifestyles to be lost within time. Truman Capote is an example of a famous author whose flaws have been lost underneath society’s approbation. Capote’s youth, with an abusive mother and absent father, led him to a successful life as an author; however, the lost favor of friends and fans sent him spiraling into alcoholism that tarnished his career.
Societies standards are what everyone wants to fit into it is the norms that are used as a guide to living life. The grandmother and the misfit in O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” follow the way of social values, thoughts, and way society sees one another closely in 1953. Both the grandmother and the misfit are different in many ways, but have one common value of society’s views are important to them. The way society views and judges people causes both the misfit and the grandmother to act differently but subtly makes them more alike than either of them could tell. The shared value of society’s point of view on a human being can explain both characters views, behaviors, and actions because of how heavily it weighed on the grandma and
...d her secrets upon her death. Through her self-imposed isolation, she was able to live a life in which she was not a lonely spinster woman, but a life in which she slept every night in the embrace of her one true love, Homer Barron. While the life she lived may have been based in her own madness, for her, it may have been a rosy life indeed. However, a life experienced through the shade of rose-colored glasses usually presents a somber reality. Herein, lays the danger of succumbing to a life experienced only through a rosy hue. The individual is unable to sense their own descent into madness, and those watching are loathe to recognize the tragedy that has befallen them all.
...al to peers, the world, and even one’s self. If one lies about their feeling towards another person, there is chance that person can find out. If they find out, he or she will be extremely angry and there is a chance that the friendship will be in ruins. Lying can ruin the world, as seen by the omission of the goddess Lilith and stereotypes. Finally, excessive lying can lead to a decreased self-value. Eventually you will begin to delude yourself, and find it nearly impossible to escape the never-ending cycle of lies. Ericsson incorporates these feelings of little to no self-value in the last section of her essay when she speaks of delusion and her conclusion. Her main argument is that little lies can turn into large lies, and can cause a sort of cultural cancer. She appeals to the audience through the use of self-worth in an effort to further appeal to her audience.
I looked outside and saw my mom fall to her knees and cry as my grandma followed right behind her and did the same thing. I was as confused as to what was happening and where I was going but I looked at my sister and I grabbed her hand and said, “We are going to be ok”. We didn’t know where we were going, but we were soon to find out what it was like to be in the foster care system.
The story unfolds in a rickety colonial mansion described by the narrator plainly as “a haunted house” (Gilman 1) with barred windows and rings bolted to the walls (Gilman 2). These features along with the “horrid” (Gilman 6) yellow wallpaper entrap the narrator and swaddle her in her own madness. As the “woman” (Gilman 6) in the wallpaper takes hold of the narrator’s psyche she grows sinisterly corporal, depicted through the unintelligible sporadic entries. The purpose of the narrator’s journal warps from entries assuring herself of the pettiness of her sickness to entries that confirm and act as horrendous safe haven’s for her unhinged mental condition. Entries like “I see her in that long shaded lane, creeping up and down. I see her in hose dark grape 'arbors, creeping all around the garden” (Gilman 8) juxtapose nonchalant writing style with dark subject matter in a way that creates a disturbing tone that must be uncomfortably ingested by
Even though I clearly remember all the sanity me and my little family went through. I never wanted them to know their mother just up and disappear on them. I took a deep breath and was about ready to tell them the whole truth. They already knew too much. But right before I could speak, I became suddenly unspoken-less. They gave me this look, not a look of sadness, more like a look of pride and honor. They both huddle close to me and gave me a hug. The words that came from their mouths next. I 'll never forget
He asked if I was done eating? I said I was done so we left the restaurant. It was one hell of a restaurant, I wonder if they have one in Rochester,Mn. We drove to Rochester,Mn, it took us about almost two hours. when we got to the city, I got nervous. This is it, the moment I’ve been waiting for, all three of us were standing outside a huge house. I’m finally going to see my mother, and I’m going to live with her, till death do us apart. Or marriage, hahaha. I ran to the front door of the house and knocked couple times, unable to hold in all the excitement. After the fourth knock my mother opened the door. I just stood there and froze, she was wearing a dress, a beautiful dress. It was turquoise and it had white flowers all over it, and she wore a white scarf over her head. My mother is a very beautiful women. she had the most mesmerizing light brown eyes ever. But age was getting to her, you could see the wrinkles around her face. I was brought back to reality when, my mother screamed my name, and grabbed me. I wiped my tears away quickly and hugged her back. we were like that for a bit, we even forgot about my brother and my uncle, who stood behind
