High School Students VS. Real World? Did anyone teach you about how to be successful in the real world? In today's educational society, educators do not have the curriculum to teach students the factors and skills concerning how to prosper in the world. The state would rather have the educators focused on teaching the students how to pass tests. The curriculum does not actually help students in everyday life. Students need to know math, English, science, and history for getting a degree, but when students are striving in classes and can not do a day to day task, it defeats the purpose. Helping the students will help better the society. Many students start college and between the issues of financial aid, money, working, rules and regulation, they end up dropping out. When all of these things could be solved by going through a process, but instead students get defeated because they do not understand what to do. For this reason, educators should provide students with all the skill set and knowledge to work through any type of situation. With students having less stress about the unknown tasks, they can focus on staying in college, and managing money to be able to make that happen. Accordingly, college professors would also have less scenarios of students coming up with excuses or missing assignments because life happened and they did not have the knowledge or skill set to handle the problem. Along with that, the society would increasingly become more and more educated. Colleges would also benefit from the bigger budget, because more students would be attending. Many problems come from the unknown. At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
In “The Essentials of a Good Education” by Diane Ravitch, she states that students are not getting a full curriculum because schools are focusing too much on the subjects the government has mandated. Since public schools are insistent on maintaining good test scores from their students, they taking more time for practice tests and are making cuts to other classes or departments they feel are less necessary to the students’ education, but in reality make them well-rounded students and future citizens. The No Child Left Behind law and the Race to the Top program have caused schools to obsess over test scores and data instead of keeping an advanced curriculum for their students. Students entering college for the first time become concern with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These student are now responsible on how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands from college. Students are becoming more stressful due to academic demands, social life, and work. First-year college students should receive more help from school to learn how to help themselves and become independent.
What could possibly be wrong with current public high school curriculum. Students attend 4 years of high school and receive a well-rounded education. As I thought of this article, many of the issues I have faced as a single Hmong woman in her mid-twenties came to mind. Should I discuss the functional reasons why marriage is so important in the Hmong culture, especially for women? Or do I talk about the lack of eligible, older Hmong men? Better yet, should I complain about the attempts by my relatives to find me a good husband as if it were an unfortunate circumstance that I was single instead of a conscious choice? Thinking it over, though, I decided that all those questions boiled down to one fundamental truth – the Hmong community is still trying to learn how to treat the increasing number of Hmong women who, like me, are making the choice to stay single in their mid-twenties.
I do not agree with the bill that would require a person to earn a high school diploma before he or she can receive their driver's license. In high school, a lot of teens parents are not reliable enough to take them back and forth to school every day. If the teen lives far from the high school it makes it even harder for them to find a way to school. The two years between sixteen and eighteen give the teen time to learn driving skills and become better at driving. If they cannot get it till they are eighteen now it is the cause of a mistake they have made in early driving so they should not get it till then anyway.
America’s future lies in the youth and building an educated youth that is interested in their career would benefit society. Rising college tuition is hurting the higher education of America. As more financial pressure is placed on these kids, the more they aren’t able to focus on their goals and dreams. Although inflation is a problem, the students who are able to graduate will benefit society if they worry more about their job. They should be able to satisfy their duty in society and a rise in college tuition will hinder that vision substantially.
Students are expected to become well educated, self-thinking, and creative citizens. When teachers are expected to teach to a state guided curriculum students are limited to the standards and content of knowledge. Students are all given the same multiple choice test, on the same day, at the same time. Students are not given a chance to show their depth of knowledge.
One of the most common issues that are part of my community is that many students are not encouraged to continue on with school. There are many reason many of my classmates think a lot about attending college. It is often seen that few students have enough support from their parents. This is due for the fact that many households are in need of multiple providers to sustain it and for it to be functional. Thus many of the parents see education as a waste of money and time.
Poorer students can support themselves, and their families. This would let smart students that are held back by their family’s financial situation shine in the education system. If they did well enough and get good enough grades, consistently, they could even have their college paid for. This could then help them get a good job, and make their family richer, which would help their parents and siblings.
