Sports play a large part in many people’s lives for various reasons. Whether it’s to stay active or for personal satisfaction, sports are especially popular among high school students. I personally have participated in two sports throughout my high school career which both have had a large impact on my life.
Over the summer before my freshman year of high school, I decided that I wanted to participate in a sport. Preceding freshman year, I went to a small-scale private school which was devoid of many extracurricular activities. Transferring to Jefferson High School was a large adjustment that would take me out of my comfort zone. I first decided to run distance in track & field in the spring of 2012 to help branch out in order to make this
Playing a school sport enables you to bond with your teammates, making lifelong friends. Sports are fun and thrilling; they help kids get into shape. For years now there have been kids who play sports who also are very good in academics. Sports help kids get organized and teach them to balance their school work with sports. High schools sports have been around for many years. High schools offer many different sports such as, football, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, and soccer. Sports are a great way students get involved in school. High school teams have many different levels. The levels are varsity, junior varsity, and freshman. High school sports encourage competition and school spirt. Although joining a sport takes great effort, time commitment, and personal sacrifices, valuable lessons can be learned.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. This study provides concrete evidence that high school sports can help to gain mental and social skills that will be used later in life
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
High School sports allow a student to have a chance at not only increasing or maintaining physical fitness, but to be able to spend time with friends and fellow students to be able to work together to accomplish a goal that cannot be accomplished by individual efforts. For parents, sports can help their child by surrounding them with influences that support and promote good behavior both on and off the field/court. However, just because sports offer adolescents positive influences and rules to follow doesn’t mean that the students will decide to abide by these rules even though they are usually the logical and correct choice to make. Some student athletes still feel that there is a need to rebel against such rules, which usually results in the athletes being deprived of the sport or sports that the athletes deeply cherish. While a teenager in athletics has the opportunity to achieve their athletic goals without risk from outside activities, there are those who choose to allow those risks to destroy their personal goals and dreams in their high school athletic careers.
Though high school sports may seem trifling to some, they are often not insignificant to the athletes that participate in them. When I joined the sport of cross country, I was unaware of the impact it would have on me. Cross country taught me numerous lessons that have impacted both me and my future in a positive way.
If you are in charge of coaching a young elementary school basketball team that is geared towards students in kindergarten through second grade, a large part of your practice should be focused on allowing the kids to handle the ball in a fun, supportive environment. At this age, your players just need to learn how to become comfortable with a basketball. Here are a few fun basketball handling challenges that are aimed towards very young players.
We know it’s a fact that parents want the best for their children. So when their baby girl or boy enter high school, they most likely wants them to focus just on academics and overlook the other activities that the school offers. One of the activities is playing sports. High school encourages the student to take part in sports due to the benefits and it give an extra touch to the college application. It’s required to take at least two years of physical education in high school so might as well join a sports. Playing sports help high school students learn life lessons, make friends and it’s a good way to reduces stress.
Being a student athlete, although rigorous and strenuous, is completely worth the time and effort, because in the end, what is acquired from a high school sports experience is substantially more than meets the eye. A game that one loves becomes the foundation from which vital life skills are honed and gained.
It is easy to lose sight of what sports really are. Some say that sports help build children so, that they can thrive in life. Sports are supposed to be competitive but also fun. Youth sports teach young athletes the value of discipline and hardwork. Other people think that that youth sports have become too intense.
My personal project is about sport. I chose this theme because I think that it concerns everybody. At least once everyone has done sport in his life. Certainly when he was a child he played a lot of games, for example football, hockey, etc., ran and jumped all the time. Plenty of people go on with doing sport in their adulthood.
Out of all the levels of sports, youth sports are arguably the most important. Youth sports lay the foundation for all the proceeding levels afterwards. This level of sport is vital in the sports realm because at this level and age, they begin to learn what sports are, the fundamentals of the specific sport, and kids learn what it is to be an athlete. According to the International Journal of Sport Science and Coaching:
Have you ever wondered what student athletes are or what they exemplify? Student athletes are ordinary people like you and me, with the exception that they excel at sports and are given the opportunity to play while receiving an education. Societies believe these students are the most outstanding ones in their class. They are expected to have the highest grades as well as to be the best in their sport. I believe they go through a lot of hard work and tension to be able to play a sport while receiving an education. What many people do not ask themselves or do not even consider are the challenges they face to get to where they are. So, what are some of the challenges faced by student athletes? For this research paper, I will answer this inquiry by observing and interviewing several student athletes in various settings to get thorough information about their perspectives.
The students’ fitness level is getting higher with the more sports that student participates in. In fact, there was a variety of studies was done all around the world that confirmed the above. For example, a recent, multi year study conducted by the American Heart Association revealed, that kids 30 years ago were 15% more fit than the ones today. That would mean, that on a mile run, they would be 90 seconds faster than than kids today. This study shows, that students need more exercise and everyone can clearly see this. The good thing, is that at the High School level, sports participation continues to rise. The National Federation of State High School Associations estimated that more that 7.6 million high school student, which is over 55%, played sports during the 2010-2011 school year.
Sports have played an important role in society throughout the years, and can be traced through history as an important means towards bringing people together and developing culture. In recent years, emphasis on sports both professionally and recreationally has begun to increase as society begins to focus and aspire towards the accomplishments of elite athletes. At the same time, awareness of the negative consequences of sports is also spreading as recent research is becoming known to the public. In my project, I will research and examine the various positive and negative outcomes from playing a sport, focusing on the physical, mental, psychological, and academic effects sports influence in the life of a student-athlete.
