High School is a hierarchy. The ‘seniority card’ gets pulled on a daily basis for even the most trivial of reasons. Putting aside the concept of cliques, the mere structure of age differences causes shrimpy 14 year olds to quake in their neutral-colored dress shoes as they walk down the hallways and bruting 18 year olds to absorb more power and influence than one even thought possible. While this is the case in all public schools and should be the case at Grapevine Faith Christian Schools, it is not. Holding that GFCS seniors have been trained to be Authentic Christian Leaders, they know better than to uselessly downgrade underclassmen; oftentimes building strong and healthy friendships with the freshmen and sophomores. While this strong bond between classes is irreplaceable, there is some importance in teaching underclassmen this lesson of knowing their place in the school. Without learning this lesson, young students that just got their license pull up to school the next day and park in a senior’s assigned spot because it is grey and not painted like all of the others-- and this is bound to rub a senior the wrong way when they pull up to school at 8:13 a.m., like everyone …show more content…
Students and faculty have noticed the lack of maturing of Freshmen since the separation of Freshman Retreat from High School Retreat. These incoming Freshmen classes do not experience what it is like to be on the bottom of the hierarchy while away at Retreat. The experiences of these classes let Freshmen off the hook easily and train them to think they are still the leaders, just like they were in Junior High. The assigning of parking spots is a gentle way to enforce the social pyramid that should be prevalent in every school. The key to the transformation of boys to men within Graves Hall is nurturing by ushering a sense of responsibility and respect through stiff rules and policies. Each resident hall on the campus of Morehouse College is governed by the Resident Housing Association. Although the RHA implies rules to all of its residence halls, it is up to the staff within the halls to enforce and determine the magnitude at which they will enforce the rules. To appropriately evaluate any issues that may be surfacing, I will first have to address where the group is at developmentally. Since the members of this group are mainly freshmen, this is extremely helpful in defining where they are at developmentally. The speaker in the video discussed how on the first day of college he was walking around and giving lollypops to new students who seemed to be overwhelmed by college itself. The striking part of the story was that he had probably given out a couple hundred lollypops that day, but there was one girl that he gave one to that changed her life and helped her to become a more confident person. This related directly to status, because the girl felt she was a lower status than other people on campus because she was new. So when he came up to her (he is someone she perceives to be higher status) she felt that she became higher status because he was choosing to interact with her. This led to her gaining confidence to go out and make friends at college, which led to her having a significantly higher opinion of herself (she gained esteem). Overall, I really enjoyed taking this course because of stories like this. We got to focus on what we can do better going forward to be more impactful leaders and also learned to treat everyone equally (regardless of their status) which is a pretty difficult thing to attempt to do.
