I am a rising senior at Christopher Newport University, where I am studying organismal biology with a minor in chemistry. And while I undoubtedly have a passion for science, I have also had an enduring desire to pursue a career in research or teaching. That is why, in the summer after my freshman year, I was delighted to have the opportunity to work for the New Horizons Regional Education Centers. New Horizons Regional Education Centers is a regional facility that is comprised of six unique centers, and each center focuses on a different educational service. of tasks: classroom-oriented tasks, office administrative tasks, and a major project. Each type of task helped me in a unique way to prepare me for my future. My summer at New Horizons was an invaluable experience that taught me applicable skills for a career in the educational sector, and also allowed me to better understand what is to be expected of me and of the field. At New Horizons, I was hired as a Private Contractor, which granted me a lot of flexibility. This flexibility then allowed me to fill many types of roles in the school system. As aforementioned, these roles were divided into three sections: classroom oriented tasks, office administrative tasks, and a major project. Of the three tasks, the classroom oriented tasks were probably the most fun because I got to work hands-on, in a classroom environment. One of the classroom oriented assignments I was responsible for was figuring out what supplies the teachers needed for their upcoming school year. Based upon their requests, I would look at the budget, and order and allocate supplies to the best of my abilities. I found this duty to be very enlightening, as I was able to see first-hand how constrained public school budgets are. Inversely, I also found this assignment to be inspiring as I got to see how much these teachers wanted to provide the best for their students. The second classroom-oriented task I got to do with the teachers was to create activities and worksheets. I found this particular task to be very interesting, but also very challenging. This task was challenging because each student had different needs and capacities for activities, so what would work for some, would not work for others. I really learned that this was something that always had to be kept in mind, which requires a lot of patience and an open mind. From these classroom-oriented tasks I was able to work directly with teachers, which was invaluable in allowing me to witness their daily role. For my office administrative tasks, I worked closely with the office secretaries, and also directly beneath the principal and the director of the school. The office administrative tasks were especially varied. Some of these tasks included sending and receiving mail and packages, shredding confidential documents, making copies, and organizing files. While it may not seem like these tasks were very significant, I was very excited to have the opportunity to do them. I was very happy simply to gain some office skills, but there is also a less obvious benefit. The biggest benefit of working in the main office, was how closely I got to work with some high up officials in the school system, and getting to ask them questions. To my fortune, they were very willing to share advice about how they got to where they are. I learned a lot about the individuals there, and about how they decided to pursue this career, and about what has changed since they started. I found this particular aspect of these tasks to be priceless, as many of these individuals have been working in the school system for many years and know it better than most. The main project of the summer was also a very valuable experience. My main project of the summer was interpreting data on students that had been taken over the coarse of many years. With this data I would look for certain trends, and then translate these trends into graphs and write up a report. This task was very important for three reasons. Firstly, this project was one of my serious and official assignments, and as a result, there was little room for error. Secondly, it was important because it allowed me to brush up on my skills with using excel, making graphs, and also presenting information. Finally, I enjoyed this task because it felt very close to the realm of what I study at CNU, and approached my second passion for doing research. From this project, I learned that there are definitely chances for doing research within the school system. In my time working at New Horizons, I learned a lot.
I really felt that the combination of these three tasks exposed me to very different and very realistic parts of working in the school system. The classroom-oriented tasks exposed me to the daily life of a teacher, and the responsibilities and complexities that are an integreal part of that career. The office administrative tasks boosted my office skills, allowing me to make copies and fax like no other. But further, it allowed me to ask professionals in the field about what it took to get where they are, and what advice they would give to someone who was pursuing such a career, which I can’t express my gratitude enough for them being willing to share that with me. And finally, the major project allowed me to use more of the scientific skills I have picked up at CNU, and also to see that perhaps research and teaching could be a combined effort. And while all of these tasks were incredibly enlightening and encouraging, perhaps the greatest takeaway from this experience was the passion for students that I witnessed there. In my time there, I could really see how much everyone loved their job, and the devotion they felt toward their students. I now feel a lot more confident in saying that I want to pursue a career in teaching or in the school system because of the skills I attained at New
Horizons.
Admittance into the University of Georgia’s Honors Program would push me to continually test my potential in the pursuit of my Pre-Medical studies. I take pride in challenging myself to completely master a field of study that enhance my capabilities, and therefore, prepare myself to strive for my next goal in life. In order to grow into a better and improved self, one would need to test unfamiliar waters and reach new heights. The Honors Program ensures this growth by bringing in unaccustomed, rigorous, and beneficial material one cannot simply find in a traditional setting with their head in a textbook. Students are more able to grasp information through exploration and peer discussion which the Honors Program would provide. I believe that
When I was young, I was always told to do the best I can possibly can and achieve the best of grades. To be flawless and to be exemplary at everything I do. These sayings said to me mostly by my Mom, have led me and helped me to, in many ways become preeminent in my education. As I was growing up those sayings have helped me to achieve excellence wherever possible, and most of the time over achieve excellence.
For years now it’s been my dream to attend Melbourne High School. My two cousins have attended the school in the past five years and I’ve heard how enriching being part of the MHS community can be. They have both become excellent role models for me and now I wish to experience being part of the school’s tradition for myself.
Since my first visit at the Air Force Academy as a young boy, I instantly realized this is where I want to go. Ironically, I never why I wanted to go, was it my parents will or the expectations of others and myself? As I started to mature and grow, I learned more about the academy and what it really meant to become a cadet. The opportunity to have a world class education pushed me to pursue acceptance to the Academy. Going to the Summer Seminar will give me a chance to explore many aspects of cadet life to further enrich my interest in the Academy.
Volunteering at a children’s crisis treatment facility, volunteering with Special Olympics, coaching children’s sports teams for 10 years and working as a substitute education assistant has increased my understanding of childhood development. Grandmound Elementary School provides me with opportunities to strengthen my leadership and collaboration skills, through teaching art (as a volunteer) to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and serving as PTA president. I was able to implement many enriching opportunities for students in areas of art, science, and reading. I learned to work as a team, set targets, achieve goals, give and receive guidance. Participating in these activities has confirmed that working with families and particularly children are my purpose.
I’m currently enrolled in Montgomery College, located in Maryland. Montgomery College is a community college. Community colleges are different in comparison to four-year universities. I had a choice of either getting a job or going to college. There are many reasons why I choose to go to Montgomery College. I chose to go to college because I want to pursue a degree in Psychology. When choosing a college, there are a lot of decisions to make and you have to choose what’s best in your interest. In today’s society, community colleges take up a lot of the students going to pursue their education. President Obama has proposed to make all community colleges free for all Americans and I agree with this statement. People have different perspectives
First, I would like to thank you for considering me for this position. I think that I would be a great fit for the CIA, and the federal government. There are many reasons why I am interested in a position with the CIA. A very common concern that faces many high school students today in the world is whether they go to college or not. There are many factors in whether a student is eligible to attend a college or not. They have to have enough money to cover the cost, prepare early, and choosing what they want to attend college for. These are some of the many issues that might occur when a student starts to think or plan on going to a college.
Two years ago, I embarked on a journey that would teach me more than I had ever imagined. As a recent college graduate, I was thrilled to finally begin my teaching career in a field I have always held close to my heart. My first two years as a special education teacher presented countless challenges, however, it also brought me great fulfillment and deepened my passion for teaching students with special needs. The experiences I have had both before and after this pivotal point in my life have undoubtedly influenced my desire to further my career in the field of special education.
The Honors Program is less about reward and more about the push for personal growth for myself. The last four years have shown to be a challenge, from being the first year student in Pre-calculus to being the junior who is aiming for a five on the AP test. I came from having mostly A’s, with few B’s, to being the student who earned A’s in every class. Personal motivation led me to this achievement. The Honors Program at CSU looks like a program to help me continue my journey of gaining knowledge. Being a member of this program would give my motivation to continue to strive for those higher grades. It is in my interest to be in this program to keep my performance in classes at the upper level. This program would allow me to focus on academics and strive for the best grades personally possible.
Seeing the patients smile after administering dental treatment is one of the most gratifying experiences, and has always motivated me to evolve as a person while serving the community. In 13 years of private practice in India, I have developed empathy towards patients by being compassionate in healing their pain and understanding the needs of the community. My professional experience has enhanced my clinical knowledge, understand my strengths and weaknesses, and developing a passion for higher studies in order to offer best possible treatment to my patients. There is no doubt in my mind that one cannot succeed without failing, people view failure as a halt in progress but i disagree completely. Failure just brings you closer to the goal you are trying to achieve. People often think about how they could have prevented their mistakes and often ask themselves, “What could I have done differently?” Sometimes it’s not worth finding out.
I am dually certified in Science and Social Studies. I enthusiastically welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities into my class. From day one of class, I encourage all of my students to prepare for this journey we are about to take and embrace the challenge. Students are asked to commit to hard work, perseverance, and mental stamina and they are assured that the rewards will be plentiful at the end of the school year. I emphasize the importance of recognizing and admitting your weakness so that you can receive the help needed to improve on that particular standard. I share with the students who don’t have a love for science that over course of the year, they will have a change of heart for science because the lessons will be hands on and exciting. The students quickly learn that we are in this together and it isn’t enough for them to get the standard and leave a classmate behind. I encourage them to help one another often. My goal is for each student to master the NC Essential Standards, pass the End of Grade test and be prepared for high school. I am a junior at Princeton University where I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a certificate in History and the Practice of Diplomacy. As someone with a knack for economic research and an interest in working for the federal government, I hope to have the opportunity to join the Economic Research Service as a student trainee this summer. Studying economics in the classroom as well as working with a professor on economic research has made me want to pursue a career in economic consulting, and I am confident that I possess all the skills necessary to be a successful intern at the Economic Research Service. I am zealous and passionate about all my endeavors, and I am sure that my can-do attitude in addition to my experience with objective problem solving in both professional and academic settings make me an excellent candidate for this internship.
