“ Sports don’t build character, they reveal it” – Heywood Broun Heywood Broun was born in Brooklyn, New York in the year 1888. He attended Harvard University but did not obtain a degree. When Broun first started out as a journalist he wrote sports stories but later became a columnist for the New York Tribune. A lot of the time in his columns he criticized social injustice and took the side of emerging labor unions. In the year 1930 he attempted to run for congress, but did not succeed. He wrote many books before his death in 1939. His quote about sports revealing character was a reflection of himself. Sometimes there are just small things a player can do to reveal their character in a good way. Just by clapping when a player gets up from an injury or by shaking a players hand at the end of the game can reveal the character of an athlete. Throughout a game there are many challenges and moments of stress that an athlete must overcome. Whether or not the athlete can surpass these challenges truly shows their character. They think the act of playing on a team teaches discipline, sportsmanship, and how to work with other people. There is no doubt that in sports an individual learns how to work with a team, but discipline and sportsmanship are built in everyday life. Discipline is an aspect of someone’s character that is usually taught by their parents or they will encounter it at school or work. It is not built while playing a sport it is just revealed while playing. Whether or not the player has strong disciplinary characteristics will be shown throughout the game by them listening to their coach. Sportsmanship is another trait that is thought to be built in sports, but it is only revealed. The sportsmanship of a player is revealed when they are playing the game. Good sportsmanship is shown by accepting a loss and telling the opposing team they played well or winning and not bragging about it.
