The topic I have chosen is how heroes and villains relate to each other. A question I need to answer is how are heroes different from villains? This might seem obvious and easy but I feel like it is important to tie my paper together. Another question I need to answer is how are heroes and villains similar? This is a little more tricky and requires more research. People always think of heroes and villains as opposites but I think if you dig a little deeper you will find that they have a lot more similarities than meets the eye. What needs to be asked to answer this is possibly “What drives them to do what they do?” Also, “Where did they come from?” A person’s background answers a lot of questions about why they act and where their values lie.
For my Project Learning Summary I chose to focus on two people and one movement that I believe have a strong impact on society today. Each of the topics has had an influence during their respective eras, and each proved that their work has gone onto make changes in the world as we see it today. I first looked at Darwin, for his work on natural selection and the significance it has had on science and religion. I then took another look at Booker T. Washington, and how his stance on integration of African Americans into a “white” society was at the end of slavery and what his efforts have done since. Lastly, I looked at the Feminist Movement and the efforts that were taken for improving equality as a whole in society.
In most stories we enjoy, may it be from childhood or something more recent there is many times a theme that shows a clear hero and a clear villain. But ordinarily this is not the case in real life, there are few times that this is quite that simple. There are many sides to each story, and sometimes people turn a blind eye to, or ignore the opposing side’s argument. But if we look at both sides of a situation in the stories we can more clearly understand what is going on, moreover the villains in the book or play would seem more real, instead of a horrible person being evil for no reason, these two people have their own agenda may it be a ruthless vengeance or misplaced trust.

After completing this assignment, I am amazed on how much of a better understanding I have on these concepts. Not only am I able to connect them with situations in daily life, but even to the extent at which I can relate them to circumstances in a movie. The two topics that I chose to explore further and relate to the movie and each other were conflict and politeness theory. Not only did I realize my ability to connect such topics to fulfill this assignment, but I somehow feel that my future experiences watching movies or paying attention to others daily behaviors will be more analytical after completing this assignment.

Heroism: Why Heroes are Important is a short essay by Scott LaBarge. In the essay, LaBarge is the narrator and tells a story his choice of becoming a philosopher. Inspiration came from one of his hero’s, Henry David Thoreau. Through the essay, LaBarge reveals what message the reader should learn. Throughout this semester we have analyzed many tales revolving around different “heroes” and their accomplishments. Our first “hero” was Ree Dolly in an independent film called Winter’s Bone, she had to find her father in order to keep the land her family lived on. The next hero was Chris McCandles from Into the Wild who was sick of living within the boundaries of normal life and wanted to go somewhere where he could truly live. There are six different qualities of folk heroes. Three are self-sacrifice, the willingness to go on a search for something of value, and someone who is willing to ask for help from others. In schools we have classes focusing upon the physical and educational well-being of students but has ignored the mental well-being. The lack of mental health education results in people not knowing how to properly interact with mental illness both in others and with themselves. Not only is the knowledge of how to deal with mental illness an issue but the stigmatization that has derived from the lack of understanding creates a negative environment in confronting these illnesses.
