What is a hero?
What defines a hero and what does it require to be a hero? To be hero one must be strong, brave, noble and caring. Also a hero must only think of others not oneself. In the Princess bride one may argue that there was only one hero but, in this case there was two heroes. Inigo Montoya and Fezzik were the heroes in The Princess Bride. The reason Inigo was the hero is because without him Buttercup and Westley would have died and Rugen would have went on killing people left and right. Inigo also thought about his father every day and he wanted to get revenge for him. So he practiced and became a great sword fighter so that he could defeat Rugen and feel good knowing that his father’s killer wouldn’t kill anyone else. Inigo did have some help from Fezzik towards the end. Without Fezzik Inigo would have been taken prisoner and wouldn’t have been able to save Buttercup and Westley. Most importantly without Fezzik Inigo wouldn’t have been able to kill the
Rugen. In the story Prince Humperdinck wants the thief’s forest emptied before the wedding and he wants everyone arrested. So then a brute squad is formed and Fezzik is part of it. When they go to arrest Inigo he and Fezzik are reunited and Fezzik nurses Inigo back to health. He tells Inigo of Vizzini’s death and tells him of Rugen the six fingered man that he has been searching for. Once Inigo is well they head out to kill Rugen. Fezzik is a hero because he cared for Inigo when he was sick he didn’t give up on him or leave him behind to get captured. Then Inigo finds Westley and he and Fezzik take him to be brought back to life so that he can save buttercup. When they get to the castle Inigo and Rugen have a sword fight and in the end Inigo kills Rugen. Fezzik finds a horse for everyone and they all ride away happily ever after. Inigo is the main hero in this story because without him Buttercup would have been killed Westley would have stayed dead and his father’s killer would have gotten away with murder. Fezzik played a big role in the story to. Without him preventing Inigo from being taken prisoner the story wouldn’t have ended the way it did and most importantly Inigo wouldn’t have been the hero.
In Princess Bride, Westley's quest is to return to his true love, Buttercup, whom he has loved since a young worker on her family's farm. With no money to marry, Westley decides to strike out for his fortune but is taken prisoner; he is mistakenly reported as dead to Buttercup, who is promised to Prince Humperdink as his bride. In his quest, Westley must first survive being taken prisoner by the Dread Pirate Roberts which he is able to do by showing no fear when Roberts announces daily "Tomorrow you will die" (Princess Bride n.p.). Roberts in fact is so impressed that he retires and names Westley as his successor. Upon
Westley is of a humble origin- a farm boy working on Buttercup’s farm. He loves her and she loves him. Whenever Buttercup ask Westley for a favor he replies with “As you wish.” He really means, I love you. However the mystery remains of what had happened to his parents, was he an orphan or did he leave his family. Westley had set sail in the seas to seek out his fortune to have enough money to marry Buttercup. His ship was attacked by Dread Pirate Roberts, which is why everyone assumed Westley was dead for five whole years. Since the love of his life was kidnapped, Westley set off to save Buttercup and on the way he encountered struggles/ trials, helpers, thresholds/tests and helpers along the
“As you wish,” said by the Farm boy, westley, a main character who ties the story of love, romance, and action together. The book The Princess Bride by William Goldman is a story of two lovers, Buttercup and Westley. After Westley dies on a boat by The Dread Pirate Roberts, the King of Florin, Prince Humperdinck, started searching for love. After a visit from the count and countess they decide that Buttercup is worthy of being the queen. Even though Buttercup says she will never love The Prince, she still agrees to the marriage. Soon after Buttercup is introduced to Florin she gets kidnapped by the Turk, the Sicilian, and the Spaniard. They all figure out that they are being followed by the man in black, which leads to the adventure part of the story. In The Princess Bride, William Goldman uses many different archetypes like the damsel in distress, the task, and the magic weapon which are archetypes that have been used for centuries and renders them new to make the story flow together and more interesting.
The Hero Journey undergoes different points in someone’s life. In 1949 a man named Joseph Campbell shared Mythic and Archetypal principals with the world. Christopher Vogler fulfilled all of the Hero Journey steps. In the Princess Bride film directed by Robert Reiner is based on the book written by William Goldman. In the film Westley the farm boy leaves the farm, and goes on an adventure to provide for his true love. Westley is a Campbellion a Hero because the story has Mythic and Archetypal principals and follows most of the twelve stages of the Hero Journey.Westley begins his Hero Journey with a call to adventure out of his ordinary world.Westley is a farm boy, who works for a beautiful girl named Buttercup. The farm is filled with animals, and orders from Buttercup. The only wodds Westley says is “As you wish” (Princess Bride). Westley shows that he loves Buttercup but does not want to live on the farm anymore so that he can get a better life for the both of them. When Buttercup realizes she truly loves Westley, and wants to spend the rest of her life with him. Buttercup would tell Westley to do things just so he could say the magic words. “ Farm boy fetch me that pitcher” ( Princess Bride). This shows that Butercup loved Westley even though she did not show it, and this would send him on his adventure. Tom Hutchsion expressed in his article that “ There is a call to a new experience. This might appear like good news or bad news” (Hutchsion, Tom). Westley does not refuse the call because he wants to provide a better life for Buttercup. Westley entered his special world by getting on the ship, and starting his new life. While on the ship Dread Pirate Roberts keeps Westley on the ship as a passenger, and trains him, and he becom...
The principal action is Westley decision to leave the farm which causes a cascade of events to follow. On his journey he is captured by the “dread pirate Roberts who never leaves captives alive” and is therefore assumed to be dead for five years, in which time the Prince of Florin choses Buttercup as his bride to be. This engagement leads to the princess being abducted by what appear to be soldiers from Guilder in order t...
Varying from time, location and person, what it takes to be considered a hero has remained for the most part unanimous and throughout time has been represented in multiple ways. Most present in dated writing, a hero 's image and pride make up a big portion of most heroes. Their heroes aren’t so humble and they aspire to keep their title of "hero". On the contrary, most heroes in literature today are quite modest and don 't expect to be viewed as or considered heroes (more often than not they themselves do not classify with being heroes). As is the case for Beowulf and Katniss Everdeen, both different and yet also similar in terms of action, motives and thought (their personality being what really separates the two). Perhaps the biggest part of how a hero is treated and acts depends on what their society is like. Throughout time, the overall qualities of a hero have remained very similar. What has changed, is
Westley’s dedication to Buttercup motivated him throughout the story. He admitted the following to her: "I have taught myself languages because of you. I have made my body strong because
...tisfy Westley and his needs in order to impress and be good enough for him. However, in the beginning, Buttercup is less susceptible; not concerning herself with Westley at all. Finding out that she loves Westley changes her life. Her transformation from tom-boy to an elegant lady only happens because of Westley; her change has only one purpose and that is to meet up to Westley’s standards. In conclusion, it is clear that The Princess Bride displays a lot of the same issues and conflicts. Whether the characters deal with themselves, others, or the general public, they all grow and develop because of these struggles. Beyond this, the readers of this novel can easily learn a few lessons from the characters of the book. Learning from these lessons, and learning to deal with conflict is a skill that will make a better person out of anybody willing to take the action.
All in all, heroism is a vague word that could be defined as many of things. Such as bravery, courage, honesty, morality, trusts...etc. If Beowulf was defined as a hero then the knight should be defined as one also seeing as he gave the old women the choice to be old and good or pretty and bad. Or if the Author of The Art of Courtly love cannot be heroic and then write in a way of being heroic how can one decide what heroism is. All three of these studies show different forms and fashions of heroic people, feelings, and attitudes. Overall heroism is and always will be based on personal opinion, what one person defines as a hero can be completely different from what another person sees it as.
She stalls the wedding a bit, waiting for Westley to come, but he does not. After that, Buttercup decides to commit suicide upon returning to her room for the evening. This shows that true love comes naturally and you cannot learn to love someone. It shows the power that an unhappy marriage can have over people if they don’t marry their true love. If this part of the story would have taken place in a different time period, it may not have happened at all. This is because marriages can’t be forced today and both parts have to accept and sign on the
Adventure, true love, death, and a malevolent antagonist are all parts of an exciting fairytale. The Princess Bride incorporates all these qualities into a spellbinding story enjoyable for all readers. Buttercup and Westley are two characters in love with each other. They became separated and go on exciting adventures to reunite again. Torture, death, kidnapping, threats, injury, and suicide attempts don't stop their love. In the end, true love always prevails. Although it looks like true love cannot survive in the beginning of The Princess Bride, facts and events that happen throughout the story proves it otherwise.
What does it mean to be a hero? According to Webster, a hero is someone "of great strength [and] courage" who is "admired" for his or her "courage and nobility."1 Stretching this definition a bit further, I would argue that a hero is someone who uses this strength, courage, and nobility to help or save others. Nora Helmer, in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, leaves her husband and family at the end of the play-a move that can be viewed as either very selfish or very heroic. Because Nora uses her strength and courage in effort to save others and herself from the false "doll's house" life they are living in, her final act of leaving home is truly heroic. Nora saves her children from being raised by a mother who doesn't know the first thing about being a mother and she saves Torvald by no longer enabling him to live the false life he has built for himself. Finally, she saves herself by taking herself out of the "doll's house" and into the real world to discover who she is and what she believes.
What does it mean to be a hero? Like anything else in this world, the definition of the word hero can be argued. Some may say that a hero can be passive, that is if he or she refrains from doing a certain action it makes them heroic. Others would argue that to be truly heroic the character must never turn tail and always face the obstacle head on even though he or she may die in the process. So is Beowulf a hero? Yes, Beowulf is a great epic hero, but his greatness comes only from his sword and not from his mind.
In the early morning of August 31, 1997 Princess Diana of Wales became involved in a fatal car crash. Though her death struck the nation with tragedy she will forever be remembered for not only being a princess but for all her other heroic deeds. Heros can be everyday people, fictional or nonfictional, or in this case a princess. Most great stories are based off of epic heroes, the hero will have a noble birth, great courage and strength and of course show national heroism, they do what is right even when the task is hard. Princess Diana stood up for what is right even when inconvenient, and looked she crazy, she is a true hero and a great role model. Princess Diana embodies the characteristics of an epic hero because she
A hero is someone that helps others no matter what the situation. There are many qualities that a hero must posses such as bravery, courage, strength, intelligence and honor. These qualities alone are not enough to make a hero. They must also be pure at heart, fight for the good of mankind and only fight when it is to protect the people and not out of revenge. Beowulf is everything a hero should be, but contains a few qualities that a hero should not posses. When Beowulf sailed with his men to Herot he had one goal, to rid the hall of Grendal. Beowulf was under no obligation to destroy Grendal and never asked for anything in return for his services. A true hero would never ask for money or anything of value. He put his life at risk to save the people of Herot, who he didn’t even know, out of his own good nature Great strength has been a trait that has been identified with heroes in many stories and legends. Than he saw hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons But so massive that no ordinary man could lift... (II. 1557-1560) Beowulf possessed great strength that separated him from other men. Being able to use a sword that no ordinary man was able to carry gives the feeling that Beowulf is something more than a human being. It makes him special and causes him to stand out from all other men. Fame is something that makes a hero more noted. Beowulfs popularity had spread all over the world. He never let this go to his head and he never thought that he was better than everyone else because of it. “Your fame is everywhere, my friend,/Reaches to the ends of the earth, and you hold it in your heart wisely...” (II.1704-1706). A hero should not be foolish or full of himself. Unferth said: You’re Beowulf, are you- the same Boastful fool who fought a swimming Match with Brecca, both of you daring and young and proud, exploring the deepest Seas, risking your lives for no reason But the danger? (II. 506-511) A hero should not have to prove to himself or to anyone else that he is brave, fearless or courageous. If he is pure a heart and his intentions are good then he can be considered a true hero.
