Hero Definition Essay

Many have asked this one question, what a hero is; either big or small a hero can be anyone. Some might not look the part, but that doesn’t matter, it’s what they do that counts. A hero can be anyone, even those you might expect. According to Webster dictionary a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities, a person who is greatly admired.

To say nothing of, the men and women in our military, fire and police department, who risk their lives every day for our country, are heroes. Once they wake up and step out that door they never know if they could be wounded or killed in a heartbeat. Heroes can be like the comic book, and movie superheroes. Some examples of superheroes are Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Aqua man, and Captain America to name a few. To a child, when thinking of a hero, thoughts immediately point to capes, x-ray vision, super strength, climbing sides of buildings, and web slinging. These are among things associated with being indestructible.

Being a hero in real life situations doesn’t require the same characteristics as a fantasy superhero.

An everyday hero could be as simple as a father admired by his son, or a mother by her daughter. An everyday hero can also be anyone who has a positive influence on another person’s life. Examples of those include a mentor, teacher, preacher, parent, and even a friend standing up to a bully. Someone who has changed or influenced someone else’s life in a positive way is a

hero.

Another example, of an everyday hero could be a child or adult battling a life threatening illness. A parent with cancer or a life threatening illness continuing to provide for their child might be a hero. Heroes in other’s eyes are children who are battling an illness such as cancer that some say is impossible to overcome. Those that are battling are called heroes because they are warriors battling an enemy. Kids are very inspiring because they naturally have the heart to keep fighting. Even in times when the battle of life is lost, the strength and bravery and true love of life in children battling a disease still inspire others to go on. This is what makes them a hero in someone’s eyes.

A child hero that I know personally, is a little girl named Kennedy. When Kennedy was just 7 months old she was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer. Since this time, she has undergone chemotherapy treatment as well as multiple tests. She has also had 3 surgeries to remove the tumor in her calf and abdomen. The surgeries on her leg required the doctors to remove her calf muscle. At that time the surgeons told the family that she would never walk. Fast forwarding 2 years later, Kennedy is not only walking, but running, jumping, and playing like any other kid. This makes her a hero not only in my eyes but in others.

In conclusion, you now know of some heroes that you might have never thought of. You will now be able to thank those that you would have never guessed could be a hero. Heroes are not only fantasy superheroes but everyday people. Everyone has a hero but not everyone can be a hero.
