An archetype is a term that can represent universal patterns of human nature and are always the building blocks of movies and stories. These terms include many archetypes with their own properties such as characteristic, symbolic, and situational. In the 1997 film Hercules produced and animated by Disney it depicts the story of Hercules, the son of Zeus and Hera. The God of the underworld Hades poisons Hercules when he is a baby with his two incompetent sidekicks Pain and Panic turning him mortal, and leaving him on Earth. When he is sent to the temple of Zeus by his orphan parents he is greeted by his real father Zeus who tells him in order to go back to Mount Olympus and live with him he is tasked with becoming a God or by fulfilling heroic …show more content…
deeds. In the beginning of the story once Hercules the hero is born, the God of the underworld Hades, the devil figure comes to visit and “congratulate” Zeus for his child.
After that he goes down to the underworld and asks the Fates if Hercules is going to interfere with his plans of taking over Mount Olympus by releasing the creatures of nightmares called Titans used for defeating Zeus. The names of The Fates are Enyo, Deino, and Pemphredo. The Fates tell him that Zeus will fall, but if Hercules is not taken care of he will interfere and soil his plans of taking over the world. He takes action with the advice given and sends his two scapegoat servants Pain and Panic to kidnap Hercules, turn him mortal, then murder him.
As Pain and Panic are feeding baby Hercules the Mortal potion he says comically “in order for it to work he has to drink every last drop”. As the two are force feeding Hercules they hear 2 people approaching, in panic they drop the potion from the mouth of Hercules and it shatters on the ground. From the broken bottle you can see a miniscule drop of the potion secrete from a shard of glass. Even though he drank 99.9% of the potion he still retained his God-like

strength. An old couple finds baby Hercules and adopts him into their family as an orphan. The movie fast forwards to Hercules as a teenager, he has superhuman strength but people view him as an inhuman freak and he’s treated like an outcast. As he is in a town he tries catching a high Frisbee, as he jumps and catches it he collides into a massive pillar supporting the outer awning of the town. This causes the pillars to fall down and destroy everything. The whole town yells at Hercules and his step parents by calling him a freak and to leave, his parents then take him home but instead of scolding him they tell him to go to the Temple of Zeus. When Hercules arrives at the Temple of Zeus he starts talking to his father’s statue and asks him who he is and what his purpose in life is.
As he is speaking to the statue it suddenly animates with a bolt of lightning and starts speaking to Hercules. Hercules recoils in fear and starts to run but after Zeus explains himself that he’s actually Herculeses’ father he calms down and starts to understand. He asks Zeus why he’s not on Olympus with all the other Gods and Zeus explains that he was turned mortal and mortals can’t reside on Mount Olympus. He also tells Hercules that in order to live on Mount Olympus he needs to either become a hero or God. Hercules then asks how he can become a hero and Zeus points him towards a friendly creature who also turns out to be a mentor, Philoctetes the Satyr. After Zeus gives Hercules this advice he also reunites Hercules with his pet flying horse, Pegasus, who is a major helper in his quest to become a
hero. Hercules goes to Philoctetes and asks him to train himself into a hero, he immediately says no because of all the other heroes Phil has trained that let him down, but Hercules promises he’ll be different. Phil told Hercules he wanted a hero that will be remembered and when the Gods paint him in the star’s people will say, “that’s Phil’s boy”. After relentlessly begging Phil for his help he builds a relationship with Hercules and eventually says yes. Hercules and Phil train for years and you can see Hercules get bigger and better at everything he does with Phil’s mentoring. After completing his training Hercules begs Phil to go on a real mission. Phil eventually gives in but on their way to Thebes they hear a scream. The Damsel in distress Meg is being attacked by a large centaur. At first Hercules tries to reason with the beast but it wasn’t working, so he resulted to violence and ended up beating the centaur. Meg is amazed at his strength and calls him “wonder boy”. After that he goes to Thebes in search to become a hero, he finds out the whole town is in disarray with high crime and just a general bad vibe, one of the old people living there even gets fed up enough and claims he’s moving to Sparta. Meg comes yelling over into large crowd asking for help in Thebes claiming two young boys were trapped under boulders in the gorge. Low-key Meg is actually working for Hades, she is a temptress for Hercules who is his weakness being manipulated by Hades, ultimately who Hades tries using against him. As he rushes over to save the kids he does, getting applauded by the whole town. Right after being appluaded a huge a creature of nightmare appears, a hydra. At first he gets swallowed but is able to kill him from the inside by cutting off its head. Right after that it grows 3 heads back, as he tries to cut off another head three more grow in its place. Pegasus swoops by to help him and he tries to fly away but ultimately he gets caught. The Hydra pins him against the mountain side and as a last ditch effort he punches the side of the mountain and rocks come hailing down, burying the Hydra’s hundreds of heads ultimately killing it. At first everyone thought that Hercules died along with the beast but he emerges from the closed claw of the Hydra with a large burst of cheers, Meg is happy he survived because later on we find out she is working against her will for Hades because she sold her soul in order for her boyfriend to be safe, which cheated on her in the end. Towards the end of the movie Phil overhears Meg and Hades talking about bringing Hercules down and he tries to tell Hercules that Meg is a fraud and bad news. Hercules fails to listen and doesn’t believe him. Hades finds Hercules and threatens him that if he doesn’t give up his power for twenty-four hours he will harm Meg, after Hades sweet talks him down he promises Meg won’t get hurt if he gives up his powers. Hercules gives up his powers and shortly after Hades then tells Hercules that Meg is working for Hades and he was just played. Meg tries to explain that he’s lying but Hercules doesn’t listen, powerless and shell-shocked he still tries to fight the cyclops released in Thebes but it’s to no avail, he has no power to defeat it. Shortly after Hades releases the Creatures of nightmare, the titans out into the world to wreak havoc on Mt. Olympus, this is the battle between Hell and Heaven. During the Fight with the Cyclops, Hercules gets blind sighted, a falling pillar was going to hit him. Meg pushed him out of the way but she was Injured gravely, Hades broke his promise that she wouldn’t get hurt, and due to this his powers came back. He acted upon this and flew to Mount Olympus. The Gods were captured including Zeus, Hercules arrives and saves everyone while throwing the Titans into space, banishing the creatures of nightmares from the world. Sadly. While all that was happening Meg was dying, it showed the three Fates in the underworld holding her string of life, then cutting it. While Hercules was running back her life left her body. Hercules went to the underworld demanding her soul and he offered his in replace for hers, Hades agreed knowing that if he were to dive into the pool of undead souls in search for her body he would rapidly grow of age then die. As Hercules was diving you can see him getting older and older and it cuts to the scene again of the three Fates holding his string of life. As The Fates try to cut his string it turns golden and breaks the scissors, along with that you can see him glistening in gold floating out from the pool holding Meg’s limp soul. He then flies up to the surface with Pegasus and reunites Meg’s soul with her body, returning life to her. As he flies up to Mount Olympus he is greeted by his family and all the Gods. They’re all so proud he saved them and Zeus says he is now a God and an amazing hero putting someone’s life before their own. The Gods ask him to stay on Mount Olympus but he tells them that he wishes to live on the Earth with Meg, they respect his decision and let him go, they were star crossed lovers. In the Movie Hercules it showed us that no matter the circumstances you have to try your best to overcome the obstacles put ahead of you by fate. It’s always great to see how good archetypes correlates to scenes, people, and the general story, because all stories need archetypes. One of the best archetypes I found was Phil, he was a mentor, and a friendly beast helping him throughout the whole way and in the end getting his redemption, because the Gods put Hercules in the sky and everyone said, “that’s Phil’s boy” Who do you think YOU would be in the story of Hercules?
The character Hades from the Disney movie Hercules is an allusion to Hades from Greek Mythology. The movie takes the traditional character of Hades as the god of the underworld from Greek mythology and makes it palatable for children.
Risking his life for Megs has shown that Hercules is a true hero. The hero will restore peace to the world they’ve returned to, along with the world they came from. They will build it back up to what it was before they left. Hercules is given the option to live with his parents and stay in the home of the gods, but he looks down and sees how sad this makes Meg. He stands by her side and tells Zeus that he would rather stay with her.
A hero is one that separates from their ordinary world, using their extraordinary skill or ability along the way, and sacrifices themselves for the sake of a journey or quest. Throughout the course of “Wreck it Ralph,” the audience watches the protagonist, a video game character named Ralph, morph from a greedy “bad-guy” who wants all the glory, into a hero prepared to sacrifice himself for the good of a world that isn’t even his. This transition, combined with the good deeds that Ralph had done throughout the movie proves him to be an ideal epic hero.
First of all, the character Hercules was a non-hero who later received the power of strength. As a young boy Hercules wished to overcome any problem and always had in mind to be a strong man and to do the impossible. For example, in the movie , Hercules is a hard working kid who later by his parents gained a valuable power of strength being “introduced in ordinary surrounding in a mundane world, doing mundane things “ (Linda Seger 2) Hercules could not believe where all his strength was coming from because he had become too powerful to believe. Seger also explained that “this is how...
He tells him that Hercules can regain his god like status once he becomes a “true hero,” which calls Hercules to a great adventure. What is a better way of becoming a “true hero,” than to go to Satyr Philoctetes, who is known for training heroes, such as Achilles, Odysseus, and many more. Satyr becomes one of Hercules’ best friend, (besides Pegasus), and mentor throughout the whole movie, which was great because it was amusing to watch Satyr basically face palm himself whenever Hercules does something
Throughout the story he tries to find who he really is and where he truly belongs. Along the way he runs into a girl named Meg, he fall in love with her not knowing that she is working with Hades. Hades is trying to destroy Hercules. When Hercules defeats Hades he becomes a hero and a god and returns to being immortal, he faces the decision of returning to a mortal to be with Meg or being a god like his father Zeus. This movie shows that no matter what, even if you don’t fit in that you do belong somewhere. If you had the choice of being something bigger than yoursefl or love, which would you
Disney's version of Hercules revolves around a plot of paramount importance because it contrasts significantly with the original myth. To begin with, the Disney movie is named "Hercules" because it was based on the Roman version of the myth, rather than the Greek version. In addition, the original myth and animated movie are tailored towards very different audiences, therefore, the two versions contrast in quite a few ways. The first prominent difference is that the original myth of Heracles focuses on his great achieveme...
... When one looks far enough into Hercules’ life, they will see that “struggle and strain are at the demigod’s mythic core” (Simmons, 2008, p. 635). The saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” proves to be true yet again. In order to see a person/god/hero for who they really are, we need to look deep. Yes Hercules was heroic but what led to his heroism is overseen by most.
Numerous lively heroes ventured into Persephone’s clutches with the hopes of beating death, yet she explains that despite their god-like strength they too will die. Two such heroes were Theseus and Pirithous. When Theseus and Pirithous attempted to kidnap the Queen of the Underworld she enticed them to sit in the chair of forgetfulness where their flesh fused to the cushions and refused to relinquish them (Taylor 268). Persephone appears many times to offer food, drink, or rest to weary heroes in the underworld in order to trap them there forever in the same manner that Hades tricked her (Taylor, 268). Because of Persephone and Hades’ antics many people hated them as gods, but Persephone’s cruelty serves as a reminder that while death is necessary it is not always kind. In the same manner that Persephone accepted her fate, mortals must also accept their own imminent
A little girl sits on the floor with her gaze fixed on the television screen in front of her, watching magical images dance before her eyes and catchy songs flow through her ears. Even though she had seen it at least twenty times before, she still loved The Little Mermaid just as much as she did the first time she watched it. As she watched it, she longed to be a beautiful mermaid with a curvy body and wonderful singing voice like Ariel. She longed to be saved by the handsome Prince Eric, and fall in love and live happily ever-after like Ariel did. In today’s society, women strive to achieve equality between the sexes. Despite the tremendous steps that have been taken towards reaching gender equality, mainstream media contradicts these accomplishments with stereotypes of women present in Walt Disney movies. These unrealistic stereotypes may be detrimental to children because they grow up with a distorted view of how men and women interact. Disney animated films assign gender roles to characters, and young children should not be exposed to inequality between genders because its effect on their view of what is right and wrong in society is harmful to their future.
Hercules, or known in Latin as Heracles, was the greatest of the Greek heroes, a paragon of masculinity. In art Hercules was portrayed as a powerful, muscular man wearing lion's skin and armed with a huge club. He was also described as being a macho man buffoon, who was very impulsive. Hercules’ home and birthing place is in Thebes, Greece. Thebes is a city in central Greece. It plays as an important setting in many Greek myths, such as the stories of Cadmus, Oedipus, Dionysus and many other important roles in Greek Mythology. The demigod, Hercules has an interesting origin, he is most famous for his 12 labors, and leaves a legacy in words and expressions.
Hercules the great hero and the son of the great god Zeus, was the most famous of all the Greek mythological heroes. Hercules was known for his strength, bravery, and adventuresome personality. Hercules like most heroes had a god as their father, and he had a mortal mother named Alcmene. Hercules like most heroes was not an ordinary mortal and a good example was his superhuman strength.
Hercules led anything but a normal life. From the moment he was born, he was special, not only to Zeus,
