All throughout history certain advancements have propelled the human evolution to great heights; such as fire, the wheel, and the light bulb. Some advancements have changed how we live our lives for the better and some for the worse. However, we still continue to evolve ourselves with our new found knowledge and advancements to better our lives. We incorporate such advancements to accommodate our daily lives and in some cases, our lives revolve around it. One of the advancements that has had a major impact on our lives and society are automobiles. Since its creation we have revolved our lives around it. Thanks to Henry Ford, who revolutionized the automotive industries with his system of mass production when he created the Model-T. But even Mr. Ford had competition when he created his car against various other steam engines and electric cars at the time. “Henry Ford overcame the challenges posed by gasoline-powered cars” (Berman). However, it was Ford’s vision that paved the way for car companies when his Model-T hit great success in America. But Ford’s time in the limelight didn’t last long and by 1920 the sales for the Model-T started to decline due to other competitors beginning to enter the mass production game. It wasn’t the car itself that Ford revolutionized, but how the cars was made that etched him him into history. “More vehicles today run with petrol powered engines than any other form of energy. By 2015 traditional gas-powered autos will start to decline with electric automobiles and hybrids taking up most of the slack” (Frey). It’s natural to ato assume that hybrid vehicles may be the ideal replacement for the cars of today since they use the same fuel and reload said fuel in the same manner. But this simply constitutes as a band aid fix for the problem at hand. That we are still running very low on fossil fuel. So the idea that hybrids can solve it, is simply wrong. Now electric car might be a viable option since it does not use any sort of fuel at all, but alas, it too has it’s drawbacks. Vehicles were made to make our lives more efficient, and every technological advancements that has been made in regards to vehicles has always been made in pursuit of making life better for who ever drives it. But when said vehicle takes a noticeable amount of time to recharge its power before it is able to be driven again, then we would have taken a step backwards in progress. We cannot compromise such a significant feature as taking the difference from refueling in a matter of minutes, to recharging a vehicle which may take half an hour or more lightly. His formal education was limited, but even as a youngster, he was handy with machinery. He worked for the Detroit Edison company, advancing from machine-shop apprentice to chief engineer. In 1893, Ford built a gasoline engine, and within a few years, an automobile, still a novelty item of the rich or do-it-yourself engineers. In 1899 Ford left Edison to help run the Detroit Automobile Company. Cars were still built essentially one at a time. Ford hoped to incorporate ideas from other industries -- standardized parts as Eli Whitney had used with gun manufacturing, or assembly line methods George Eastman tried in photo processing -- to make the process more efficient. They were good enough to attract backers and even partners, and in 1903, he set up the Ford Motor Company.He still met resistance to his ideas for mass production of a car the average worker could afford. But he stuck to his goal and finally in 1908, began production of the Model T. Ford gradually adapted the production line until in 1913, his plant incorporated the first moving assembly line. Demand for the affordable car soared even as production went up: before Ford stopped making the model T in 1927, 15 million had been sold, and Ford had become the leading auto manufacturer in the country. In addition to the moving assembly line, Ford revolutionized the auto industry by increasing the pay and decreasing the hours of his employees, ensuring he could get enough and the best workers. During the Model T era, Ford bought out his shareholders so he had complete financial control of the now vast corporation. He continued to innovate, but competitors (growing more powerful though fewer in number) began to cut into Ford's market share.Ford became interested in politics and as a successful and powerful business leader, was sometimes a participant in political affairs. The substantial increase in the demand for EV’s came just in time as we are slowly but surely running out of oil. Some estimate that by the year 2040, 35 percent of all vehicles will be electric (Sullins, 2017). An article from the U.S. Department of Energy stated that “Electric vehicles hold a lot of potential for helping the U.S. create a more sustainable future. If the U.S. transitioned all the light-duty vehicles to hybrids or plug-in electric vehicles, we could reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 30-60 percent, while lowering the carbon pollution from the transportation sector by as much as 20 percent (energy.gov, 2014). It’s obvious that gas-powered vehicles have harmed our planet with their emissions. Although EV’s cannot reverse that damage that has been done, they can eliminate, or at least slow down, the inevitable demise that our planet is headed towards. Along with the beneficial environmental factors that correspond with electric cars, there are also beneficial financial factors. The average American spends about $2,000 on gas annually. In the future, charging stations will charge roughly $12.00 for a full charge, which is about 300 miles. This means that the average American will save about $1,400 per year on these specific car
Today, people use their own personal vehicles to travel more than ever before. Personal transportation is no longer considered a luxury; it is now considered a necessity. The number of cars in the United States has been growing steadily since the 1970s. The number of miles traveled by cars has risen nearly 150 percent, yet the United States population has only grown roughly 40 percent during that time (hybridcars.com, Driving Trends). Although it may seem like we are advancing into the future, in reality, we are moving backwards from the effects these vehicles have on our bodies and the environment. The pollution produced by these vehicles has brought us to the day where we must find other modes of transportation that cause less harm to the world in which we live. Advances in technology have developed hybrid vehicles to try and slow down the amount of pollution. Driving a hybrid vehicle, instead of a conventional gas powered vehicle, can reduce the amount of pollution that affects our lives and the environment around us.
