Hiram Maxim, founder of the U.S. Electric Light Co., at Bridgeport, CN, and the inventor of the Maxim machine gun, hired Lewis Latimer as an assistant manager and draftsman. Latimer's talent for drafting and his creative genius led him to invent a method of making carbon filaments for the Maxim electric incandescent lamp. In 1881, he supervised the installation of the electric lights in New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, and London.
Boniface Wimmer is regarded as one of the greatest missionaries of the nineteenth century. His mission was to establish a Benedictine monastery abroad in the United States to help the thousands of Catholic Germans who fled from their homeland in search of a better life. “Today, there are over thirty Abbeys and monasteries that take their root from Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B.” With the grace of God, Boniface Wimmer succeeded. He was considered to be a “man on a mission.” His tenacious attitude aided him in spreading the mission of the Benedictine Order across the Atlantic Ocean. The Benedictines were seen not only as missionaries, but also as teachers and priests. The strong sense of bonding and connection within the community was vital to the Benedictine Order then, as it still is today.
George Ohr was a mysterious and odd man. He was born in Bolixi, Mississippi July 12, 1857. His origins are from German. Meaning his parents were German immigrants who came to the United States. George Ohr was interested in various many other trades before finally learning about ceramics. He then became interested. He was an educated clay maker learning in New Orleans from a man named Joseph Meyer (“Wikipedia Contributors, George E. Ohr”).
The light bulb is the way we see in the dark, the way we find our way, the way we know when to go at a stoplight. How did Thomas Edison achieve this invention? Knowledge. Knowledge of electricity and the needs of those around him. In The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan claims that she wants her daughter to be “a beautiful little fool.” In other words Daisy is saying that ignorance is bliss. Some others believe that knowledge is power. The advancement from candles to light bulbs changed the culture entirely. People could easily do the work they needed to after sunset, and it even led to more inventions. We need knowledge to advance, and for this reason powerful knowledge is more valid than blissful ignorance.
Long ago in the year, 1863, on a many acred farm, there lived a man by the name, Augustus McCallister. McCallister was a wealthy,scoldful and greedy man who inherited land formerly owned by his father in which flourished with many crops and income. How could a single man run such an abundance of land, you may ask? The land was ran by slaves who day by day, harvested crops with gloveless hands which were torn and battered by the thorns of the brush. Who walked on dried,rough and tilled ground with shoeless feet. Who worked in the heat of the day without an ounce of water or a shirt on their back. McCallister would whip the men till they were blue in the face, if the commands he gave at the beginning of the day were not met. He would beat the women till they no longer recognizable for simply making a dish that he did not fancy. The children were cursed at and scolded for playing instead of working. He was a very cruel man and he enjoyed every second of it.

Around 1870s, there was already lighting called arc lighting. Those were placed in large indoor rooms such as a stage and outdoors in streetlight lamps. Edmund Spenser was a well-known poet during the 1500s, who greatly influenced the way poetry was written. There is not a lot to know about Spenser’s childhood life, but many people have heard of him because of his unique writing style. During the 1500s many poems were written in Petrarchan or Shakespearean sonnet form, but Spenser chose a different form to use. Spenser used a very creative style known as the Spenserian sonnet; Spenser’s poems were based on romance since his wife, Elizabeth Boyle, was his inspiration.
Carbon fibers were discovered in the late 1800s by Thomas Edison. The early lightbulbs Edison created used the carbon fibers as filaments. These carbon fibers used to create the early lightbulbs had a substantial tolerance to heat, but they lacked the tensile strength of modern carbon fibers. Edison used cellulose-based materials, such as cotton or bamboo, to make his carbon fibers. He used a method called “pyrolysis” to cook the bamboo at high temperatures in a controlled atmosphere to carbonize bamboo filaments, making them fire-resistant and capable of enduring intense heat needed for luminescence.
During the middle ages welding was very common. Early Egyptians learned the art of welding. Several of their tools were made by welding. A set of specialized workmen called blacksmiths created tools by melting the metal, then hammering them together. This method did not change much until the dawn of the 19th century which held major breakthroughs in welding. An open flame (acetylene) was very important to the history of welding. It allowed manufactures to make metal tools and equipment. In 1836 a man named Edmund Davy discovered acetylene which was soon utilized in the welding industries. Coated metal electrodes were first introduced in the 1900s. A coating of lime covered the electrode and made the weld much more stable. A number of other welding processes were also invented, such as seam welding, spot welding, flash butt welding, and projection welding. Stick welding also became popular around this time too. In the 1920s automatic welding was first introduced by P.O. Nobel. Automatic welding integrated the use of arc voltage and bare wire. It was mainly used for fixing old, molding metals. Several types of electrodes were also developed during this decade. A new type of welding was developed in the 1940s by Meredith. This became known as Heliarc Welding. Gas shielded arc welding or GTAW was another significant milestone in the welding history. Several advancements in the welding field were made in the 1960s. Dual shield, inner shield, and electro slag were some of the more important kinds developed. Plasma arc was also invented and was mainly used for metal spraying.
