Introduction One of the most important organs in the body is the brain. It allows everyone to think, breathe, talk, and walk. However, the brain is also one of the most fragile parts of the human body. Since the brain is such an important organ, humans need to protect it by wearing helmets. Helmets can be worn for many sports whether it is recreational, or competitive. Helmets have not always been around for as long as sports have been. Due to the use of helmets in various sports they have helped protect many athletes by preventing injuries or reducing the severity of them. Helmets have become such a necessity for many sports because as sports change, the design of helmets also need to change to make sure athletes keep their brain in tact. As the years progressed the sport became more dangerous for those who played. Due to this worry about safety, some players started to wear gear on their head to protect them from getting severely injured. It was not sure who was the first to wear a helmet in the sport because sometimes men would wear headgear. Some believe that the first to wear the helmet was a referee in 1905 that wore a construction hat because he believed the game would get rough and wanted to protect himself (3). Many other players started wearing helmets until it became necessary to wear them. However it was not until 1974 when the first official helmet was made and worn during games. This is fascinating because players have been wearing jockstraps since 1874 to protect their genitals because they believed it was very important so they could reproduce. Although their brain is far more important than that and they just start to realize they need to wear helmets less than 35 years ago (figure 2)(4).
