How would you feel if everyone could speak but you? Helen Keller had this issue, she was both deaf and blind. She had no way to communicate with anyone, until Annie came along to help her. Annie began to teach her how to speak, and it was such a miracle that someone deaf and blind before they could even speak, could learn to speak. This was such a miracle that it was made into a play, then later on into a movie. There were massive differences between the play’s adaption and the movie’s adaption of Helen’s story. The play’s adaption of her story started where she had contracted the disease that caused her deafness and blindness, but in the movie it had started where Helen was playing with Martha and Percy in the scene with the scissors, instead …show more content…

They instead talked about tobacco and James taking over the farm over that. Before Annie left to meet up with Helen, the blind children never showed up in the play like they do in the movie to give Annie her smoked glasses and the doll for Helen. In the movie, it is not known where she got the doll. When Annie gets there, it also starts with her seeming more independent, and wanting to bring her bag up to her room. Later on after she gets stuck in the room by Helen locking her up, she tries to get down the ladder by herself, but Captain Keller insisted to help her, this happened both in the movie and the play. Captain Keller was on the train ride to Annie’s place in the movie, but in the play, he did not go at all. The scene where it showed Helen eating from everyone’s plate happened in both the play and the movie, which was a very important part, and showed that Helen could be taught. The scene where Helen is retaliating also happens, but there were a few key differences like Helen stepping on the food, which did not happen in the play. This showed Helen was actually learning, and knew what water was, so she spelled it on the dog’s paw. The scene at the end where Helen said her first words was a lot more drawn out in the movie it seems, while in the play, it was fairly quickly. The ending scenes after the water scene was pretty much exactly the same, including Helen ringing the bell, and her wanting to learn everything.
