Why does the subject matter of police officers instill fear in our society today and should it? Heather Mac Donald’s book, The war on Cops, gives a new perspective on how the scrutiny of the media against the police makes the country less safe. The people of our country are becoming convinced the cops are the bad guys. This essay will look further into the controversial reasons why citizens label the cops as criminals, how much influence the media has over everyone’s views, and the result of rising crime due to the distrust of our police force.

The Anti Cop Movement commenced after the incident of Officer Darren Wilson and Michael Brown. What began as an act of self defense, blew up in the news as a cop murdering an innocent black boy. News outlets immediately grabbed onto the story saying, “ Wilson had allegedly shot the eighteen year old ,Gentle Giant, in cold blood, … pleading for his life.” This title gives reason for everyone to fear our officers, but in reality, the media did not share the entire facts on the story. Approaching the scene, Wilson suspected Michael Brown in the middle of the street. At the time of Wilson asking Brown to motion toward the sidewalk,he was given a negative attitude and received being cursed out. At that moment, Wilson tried blocking Brown and called for backup, but Brown charged at wilson and started pounding him, reaching for his gun. In self defense, Wilson fired and Brown ran off.
