Karl was on the final lap, approaching Heartbreak Hill in the marathon race. His breathing was already rough and scraggy, the air escaping from his tired lungs in gasps and wheezes. Karl knew that Heartbreak Hill was his toughest challenge. If he could go over this hill, today he would be the winner in the Boston Marathon. Even if he could just reach the top of the hill, then the rest of the course was downhill and fairly easy to finish.
He glanced back and saw that the runner immediately behind him, was still a distance away and that renewed his confidence. Approaching the ascent, Karl summoned up all the energy he could and began to climb the hill and finish this final challenge. He so desperately wanted to win the marathon today. Not for its prizes and riches, not for the glory. He wanted to win it only for Carol.
Sweet, charming, beautiful, petite, sexy Carol, who stood behind the finish line, holding the laurel wreath in her hands. The crowd by the side of the roads was cheering him on, and that only increased his will and stamina to win.
At last the top of the hill was nearing, in his vision. A few steps more and he would be over it. His calf muscles had started cramping, but ignoring the pain, he reconditioned his mind, to only concentrate on the hill top and willed himself to make an extra effort to go over it.
He was only a few feet away from the top now. Suddenly, he felt a hand grasp his left shoulder and pull him back. Shrugging off the hand he continued to run, but glanced back to see, how the runner behind him had managed to reach him so quickly and why was he trying to pull him back.
He was surprised to see, that the runner behind him, was now only inches away, and that this runner was no other then ...

Building and construction activity at the World’s Largest Residential Complex continued at a brisk speed, for nine months. After that the same problems encountered earlier surfaced and contractors and labor petered out. Today all activity at the plot is almost non-existent. Wait, that’s not exactly true, tumble-weeds now blow around on the site in the wind, hustling here and there, like children in a park, whilst the desert continues victoriously to reclaim the land that it had lost so abruptly to human civilization.
Carol now clearly understands, why those cranes reminded her of praying-mantises. Just like that abhorable creature that cannibalizes its lover, so also does this country do the same to the people who love it and adopt it as a replacement for their homeland.

My breath was heavy as I was sprinting from them. I could hear them on my tail. But the only this that was racing through my mind was “I have the book.”
If you were to complete an Ironman, a triathlon in which you swim for 2.4 miles, bike for 112 miles and then run a marathon right after would you feel proud of yourself? The theme of the article “An Irongirl’s Story” is to finish is to win. This is shown various times throughout the story. The meaning behind “to finish is to win” is that even if you do not come in first place, you still win just for completing a grueling task such as an Ironman race. This theme also means that you should be more focused on accomplishing your goals than beating someone else's.
The Jump-Off Creek introduces the reader to the unforgiving Blue Mountains and the harsh pioneer lifestyle with the tale of Lydia Sanderson, a widow who moves west from Pennsylvania to take up residence in a rundown homestead. She and other characters battle nature, finances, and even each other on occasion in a fight for survival in the harsh Oregon wilderness. Although the story is vividly expressed through the use of precise detail and 1800s slang, it failed to give me a reason to care because the characters are depicted as emotionally inhibited.
To summarize, the Hero’s Journey is a challenging process, yet Holden answered to his call of journey, undertook challenges under rigorous environments, and finally returned with satisfactory with aides from the helpers.
Will returns. After he opens the photo studio in the reserve, he feels like home
Red Rock West is a hood example of a new-age film noir. It has all the elements that are needed to make a film noir such as light and dark contrast, symbolic environment, the femme fatal, corruption, treachery, and deception. The film is unlike classic noir because of its use of color, irony, and humor in the movie.
“In an hour and 40 minutes they run more than 15 miles over uneven red clay, dodging small herds of cattle and donkeys laden with sacks of potatoes…The route climbs more that 3,000 feet, from and elevation of slightly more than 6,500 feet at the river to nearly 10,000 at the peak, where oxygen is precious and a cruel wind slices across the face of the hill.” (Layden, par. 2)
“Go back?" he thought. "No good at all! Go sideways? Impossible! Go forward? Only thing to do! On we go!" So up he got, and trotted along with his little sword held in front of him and one hand feeling the wall, and his heart all of a patter and a pitter.”
Ever do something stupid to impress someone? Throughout a person’s life they will do something very ignorant or say something very stupid hundreds of times. Most of the time it is because they are trying to impress somebody or change their ways to make someone or others accept them. The story “Haunting of Hill House” has great examples of people changing just to fit in. The author Shirley Jackson, who died in 1965, was one of the most brilliant writers of her time. She was widely acclaimed for her hair-raising stories and novels of the supernatural. Although the “Haunting of Hill House” fits this description perfectly with its eerie description of supernatural tales of the happenings of Hill House; there is a more to it than hauntings. The story starts out with three guests being invited to the house to monitor any out of the ordinary occurrences in Hill House. Throughout the story the guests experience some ghostly moments. However during this one of the guest named Eleanor changes her ways to fit in with the guests. Her actions show that society’s views on a person can lead that person to things they would never have thought of. One example would be when Eleanor told lies about herself and her past. Another example would be when Eleanor went around the house alone having no fear. Finally Eleanor became open and spoke out what was on her mind.
Cults have existed throughout history since the beginning of time. A cult is defined in Webster’s dictionary as a “system of religious worship with a devoted attachment to a person, principle, etc.” Over the past thirty years numerous religious cults have caused “ tens of thousands to abandon their families, friends, education’s, and careers to follow the teaching of a leader they will never meet”(Beck 78).
I knew taking this shortcut was a mistake, yet I didn't think I had enough strength to keep climbing this monumental cliff with the others. The humidity was affecting my vision and the ground now started to spin. The muscles in my legs felt
Unsure of his exact location, cold and growing weary he started his tedious climb up what he thought was the northern side of the peak, he was unsure how he got to where he was, but his best guess was that when he was the origin of a small avalanche. His last memory before his startling awakening in his would be snowy grave was snowboarding. It had been just after lunch and he thought he would try some new terrain. He laced up his snowshoes, and proceeded to climb to the highest point of the mountain.
The aching screams of my legs and feet as I speed down the dusty path. I think to myself, push through it, and don’t give up. I bounce down the path hoping to be done soon. The finish line is calling my name as I race down the chute with the audience cheering me on in the background.
