Fear is an emotion that negatively influences people to shy away from their plans. Throughout the novel, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, many characters are overcome with fear and more specifically, the fear of loss and fear of the future. Coelho repeatedly shows that by conquering these fears, people are freed from the bounds of fear and therefore willing to take action on their dreams.
To begin with, the fear of losing beloved things or people presents people with dilemmas that influence the continuation of their journey and they can only bypass these dilemmas by getting rid of the fear altogether. To begin, Santiago’s fear of losing everything he already earned makes him second guess his plans and therefore discourages him to continue his journey. Santiago expresses his doubts by stating that his “‘heart is a traitor…it does [not] want [him] to go on.’ ‘That makes sense,’ the alchemist answered. ‘Naturally it [is] afraid that, in pursuing [a] dream, [a person] might lose everything [they] [have] won’” (Coelho 145). Throughout the novel, Santiago learns to always listen to his heart, but in this situation if he did, it would result in abandoning his journey. The alchemist encourages Santiago to move on from this fear by stating that it is normal to feel scared, but not normal to give up on a dream because of a feeling. Santiago’s best solution in this situation is to conquer his fear of loss altogether and erase the doubts in his mind for a smoother journey. Next, the fear of losing life in the midst of the journey makes Santiago wonder if it is appropriate to risk his life to pursue a dream. Santiago learns how to handle this situation as “the camel driver had [once] said, to die tomorrow [is] no worse than dying on any other ...

... is only there to attempt to take him off track as the fear of suffering is worse than the action itself, which never happens when one pursues their dreams anyways. Therefore, the fear of the suffering in the future should be conquered as it is nothing but a burden to one’s life. Thus, the fear of the future must be conquered because people do not know if what they are afraid of will actually happen.
In conclusion, Coelho shows that people are more willing to take action on their dreams if they conquer their fears. The two most important fears that should be conquered are the fear of loss of beloved things or people, and the fear of what the future holds. In the end, fear is really just an obstacle in life; it controls people and makes them believe things that are not necessarily true and the only way to get rid of these thoughts is to get rid of the fear itself.
Fear is a thing that strikes someone at heart. This man had overcame it in such a way it moved many people and had became another thing that this man has overcome. It sure will not be the last of it.As Wiesel said “Hunger—thirst—fear—transport—selection—fire—chimney: these words all have intrinsic
Fear is a powerful emotion. “ Where your treasure is, there also will be your heart”(159). This is what the alchemist said to the main character. As Santiago goes on his journey to pursue his personal legend, he is faced with many challenges, as well as left to make difficult decisions that change him forever. As Santiago travels the world, he becomes a hero. In The Alchemist, Santiago shows characteristics, as well as archetypal characteristics that make him a hero. He displays archetypal characteristics such as: receiving supernatural help, proving himself many times and receiving an apotheosis.
An alchemist is someone who transforms common earth materials like metal into more valuable materials like emeralds and Santiago met one who accompanied him on his journey. When Santiago’s life was at risk for not being able to turn into the wind the alchemist motivated him by saying ”There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure”(Coelho 80). The alchemist’s statement meant that Santiago was scared of losing everything that he had even his life if he couldn’t turn into the wind. After acknowledging what the alchemist said he managed to do the unimaginable and turned himself into the wind continuing on his journey. As can be noted, the alchemist taught Santiago a valuable lesson to attempt and overcome dreadful moments because they might not be as impossible as he
"You can not make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen"(Michelle Obama); those who fear not being successful in their decisions are restrained in achieving total happiness. This is essentially true for Santiago, the protagonist in Paulo Coelho's adventure novel, The Alchemist. In this book, Santiago goes on a quest to the Pyramids of Egypt to fulfill his Personal Legend. Along the way, he meets many individuals who teach him various influential lessons about life; he must learn to trust himself instead of relying on the omens he receives and what others tell him. In the novel, it is revealed that many people choose not to pursue their dreams because of the fear of failure; fear limits individuals from making decisions that will ultimately help them get closer to their Personal Legends.
Fear can motivate people in a positive way and a negative way, it can make you choose between right and wrong. In The Crucible And The Pact, it is shown that fear can influence people into action.
According to Chris Hadfield, fear is the unpleasant emotion (caused by dangerous) by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, or likely to cause pain or threat. One of the saying is “Fear is a choice while danger is the reality of a certain situation”- which means we cannot control the level of danger in a situation, but we can choose to feel afraid or chose not to let fear limits our ability to try something new, create or dream from coming true but with practice we can overcome our fear of scary situations. For example, Chris Hadfield mentioned as a little kid, he always dreamt of going on spaceships and becoming an astronomer. However, as he mentioned about his dream, it was impossible to be true if he believed his fears about flying or trying something for the most part known to be dangerous. In my opinion, I agree with what Chris Hadfield mentioned about the fear that it sometimes can be excessive, but it is our choice to overcome these fears by more practice and gaining new experience, but I also think that it can be useful because it can hinder us from doing something that actually could harm us.
Like the king, the alchemist also teaches Santiago new life lessons. The alchemist explains to Santiago that in order to gain new knowledge, action must be done. The alchemist shares his point of view of life, and how it cannot be justified by reason, but rather by action, “The existence of this world is simply a guarantee that there exists a world that is perfect. God created this world so that, through its visible objects, men could understand his spiritual teachings and the marvels of his wisdom. That’s what I mean by action” (Coelho 131). This helps Santiago get a broad view of what he wants in life. The alchemist tells Santiago to listen to his heart because he never knows what he could learn from it. Without listening to his heart, Santiago would have not learned what he did from the alchemist. While following his dreams, the alchemist teaches Santiago to listen to what his heart has to say as well as explaining why the world

Fear is a scary and creepy thing. I went to Knott’s Scary Farm, and I knew I was going to get scared, but I wasn’t expecting how bad it was going to be. Through the night I was so scared but as I started gaining courage, I wasn’t scared of walking past the monsters anymore. I eventually got used to dealing with the fear. In my experience my fear stayed the same, and I got over it. In our unit we had many stories that went over different transitions of fear. For most stories to be frightening, they must present some form of transformation or change. Three ways transformation is played through our stories are humans, objects, and setting transformations.
In the beginning of the Alchemist, Santiago is in Spain looking across the strait to Africa, and the wind blows from Africa. And he says: “The levanter increased in intensity. Here I am, between my flock and my treasure, the boy thought” (pg 30). The diction implies the opposition of security by Santiago deciding not to stay with the sheep who represent those who do not wish to achieve their Personal Legend and chooses to realize his Personal Legend. The levanter increasing also created a frantic tone as the decision approached, and his heart made the decision for him in the moment resulting in the realization of his personal legend and his true happiness. The only way for someone to achieve happiness in one’s life, one must complete their

Fear takes so many forms. It can prey on a typical thing that most people are scared of, or create a perilous, threatening sense in the subconscious of a single being; the kind that makes the hair on the back of the neck stand at attention. Sometimes you do not even know why you feel frightened. Quickening your pace, hugging your stomach and darting glaces from side to side, are all instinct telling you you are in danger. These two stories make both fictional and non-fictional fear jump out of the page and into the turning wheels of the
