A Healthy Work Environment in the Clinical Setting and Its Effect of Patient Care A healthy work environment is essential for success with any profession, but especially in a clinical environment. Health is defined by the World Health Organization as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The healthcare culture must value and promote the health of the patient’s satisfaction and safety with equality to the health of the interprofessional team. To determine if the work environment parallels this, I will use the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) Standards for Establishing and Sustaining a Health Work Environment. The standards for success are composed …show more content…
This data management role of nurses is a vital link in the decision-making activities of the entire healthcare team. Failure to incorporate the experienced perspective of nurses in clinical and operational decisions may result in costly errors, jeopardize patient safety and threaten the financial viability of healthcare organizations” (2016). Patients and families must also be considered important members and be involved in their care. This unit exemplifies this standard by implementing the organization’s mission and …show more content…
The unit has a “group huddle” at the beginning of each shift which includes all staff from the previous shift as well as the staff for the next shift. The nurse managers deliver important information, share news, welcome new staff, and discuss opportunities for certifications, seminars, and advanced practice. Members of the staff from the previous shift have the opportunity to give “shout outs” to team members who helped them out during the shift. These shout-outs are compiled into the unit’s weekly newsletter and this allows the entire staff to view all the actions of teamwork and view this recognition. An example of a shout out is,” Katrina to Melanie for getting blood on 82A who is a hard stick.” The unit and hospital also have comment cards that patients can fill out at discharge and give feedback to the nurses who provided them care. The staff has a board of all the nurse’s names and tally marks next to the number of the comment cards they have received. Each month whoever gets the most receives an award. This facilitates friendly competition among staff and rewards good
To attain this goal, nurses must work in collaboration with other members of the health care team. To improve efficiency, the health care environment must foster the development of collaborative relations among health care professionals. Trust, open communication, commitment, and shared goals must be present to support collaborative relations and effective teamwork. Health care organizations continue to place a greater demand on health care professionals while often working with limited resources. In a recent study focused on determining if there was a current or impending shortage of nurses in care settings throughout the United States, 81% of the 178 hospitals sampled indicated they have or are an... ...
When caring for a person, I not only see the patient as an individual, but also realize that they have family and friends who are also concerned with their health. The environment that I work in can be a hectic one at times, but I ensure that I have the time to make sure every surgery and procedure is set up properly and/or any anticipated items needed are readily available. In regards to health and illness, when patients come into the operating room it is usually either to assist in diagnosing a health issue or to try and remedy a current one. I take all of my nursing actions very seriously and treat patients the way that I would want my family or myself to be
Many years from now, I will take this experience with me to better myself as a nurse. I know for the future that it is in my patient’s best interest, if I collaborate with other health care professionals. In order to maintain patient safety, I must always remember to work together with my fellow collogues to obtain a positive working environment. In order to be a good nurse, I need to always understand that I am part of a team to help those in need. I want to incorporate providing efficient care to each and every patient the best way I possibly
In Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, the mandatory sex roles and blatant disregard of women’s rights in Gilead work as an effective satire, and it is quite possible that they are viewed by none of it’s citizens as a step in the direction of the common good. In many ways it could have once been seen as the common good, because the system in essence will provide for optimal procreation, but the ways in which Gilead carries out this system are deeply flawed. The way Gilead carries out its half baked ideas is, first and foremost, hilariously satirical when described by Atwood through her use of characters, theme, and the idea of feminism, and taken into question by critic Shirley Neuman.
It is important for nurses to be well organized and if leaders are strong in organization, the team will be as well. “Nurse leaders at every level and position must develop organizational and management skills, whether they are managing human, fiscal, policy, time, material or other resources” (Canadian Nurse Association, 2008, p. 9). “Exerting good management skills is part of being a good leader – and leadership skills are necessary for good management” (Canadian Nurses Association, 2008, p. 9). When nurses are able to organize their time, they are able to assess their patients thoroughly. Following these assessments, nurses are able to organize and prioritize which patient is in most need of assistance or immediate attention. If a leader is not well organized themselves, patient care may be affected. Practical Nurses like any other nurses need to have strong organizational skills, especially, if a practical nurse is working on a demanding, fast paced unit. Patient’s health and well-being depends on their ability to manage information and multi-task. It is easy to become overwhelmed and make mistakes if a practical nurse lacks in good organizational skills. Being well organized is even more important when working short staffed. In this instance the practical nurse would have to be able to organize her patients in priority order and be able to divide her time accordingly to provide safe and competent
Healthcare is constantly changing with the intention of improving patient care. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a report introducing five core competencies for health professionals, in order to improve the Untied States healthcare system: provide patient-centered care, work in interdisciplinary teams, employ evidence-based practice, apply quality improvement, and utilize informatics (Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, 2003). IOM proposes that if all five core competencies are utilized by health professionals, quality patient care can be achieved. The facility in which this nurse work, is in need of improving their charting system. The facility currently utilizes two different software systems for charting, in addition to
Advocacy in action paper is to examine various issues in nursing staffing in the hospital and the impact of this issue on the patient’s care and patient satisfaction. Every nurse role and mission is to take care of a patient and advocate for a safe and healthy work environment. It is very important for all nurses to work together, successfully advocate for nurses and the profession to achieve a safer work environment. My role in this paper is to advocate for improvement, practicing safe in the hospital to improve patient satisfaction and reduction in nurse burnout.

Patient’s safety will be compromised because increase of patient to nurse ratio will lead to mistakes in delivering quality care. In 2007, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) conducted a metanalysis and found that “shortage of registered nurses, in combination with increased workload, poses a potential threat to the quality of care… increases in registered nurse staffing was associated with a reduction in hospital-related mortality and failure to rescue as well as reduced length of stay.” Intense workload, stress, and dissatisfaction in one’s profession can lead to health problems. Researchers found that maintaining and improving a healthy work environment will facilitate safety, quality healthcare and promote a desirable professional avenue.
The provision of patient/family-centered care, which assure safety and quality in the service, would have a team work approach as a foundation and underpinning. In a healing process or in the preservation of health intervene several factors, some of them are closely related with the environment. Healthcare providers constitute an important part of that environment, and definitely, communication with patients, families, and among themselves, have a significant impact on it. The environment would influence the patient’s perception of care, and the staff’s level of
Also, these studies question those who are effected; in this case, those who are most effected, is everyone. Doctors and nurses spend the most time working within these systems, but the information that is put into these systems effects every individual in America, because it is their information. Because nurses are often considered “both coordinators and providers of patient care” and they “attend to the whole patient,” their opinion is highly regarded (Otieno, Toyama, Asonuma, Kanai-Pak, & Naitoh, 2007, p. 210). It is clear that the use of these new systems is much debated, and many people have their own, individualized opinion. This information suggests that when there is a problem in the medical field, those who address it attempt to gather opinions from everyone who is involved before proceeding. It has been proven by multiple studies that this system of record keeping does in fact have potential to significantly improve patient health through efficiency, and it is because of this that the majority of hospitals have already completed, or begun the transfer from paperless to electronic (Otieno, Toyama, Asonuma, Kanai-Pak, & Naitoh,
Over the past decade, technological advances have paved the way for nurses to provide, quality, safe, standardized and individualized patient care (Saba & McCormick, 2015). The use of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) to manage patient data is quickly becoming widespread in the healthcare industry. The emerging use of the Electronic Health Record, is transforming how nurses care for patients. By creating and implementing an electronic, comprehensive, standardized method of recording patient data, nurses can facilitate and coordinate patient care with members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. The use of the Electronic Health Record will promote positive
Nursing may be seen as very independent work even though there will be situations that will require others. Friendships may be formed; however, to have professional interactions is something that is not always followed. In terms of patient confidentiality, we may not realize that a HIPPA violation has occurred due to friendly conversation with coworkers. If a patient were to overhear their nurse discussing their information in an unprofessional manner then it may cause issues with a patient’s dignity and their rights. If a patient’s right is violated then it can lead to a patient’s mistrust in their caregiver, leading to mistrust in the facilities, and can end with a patient’s health being compromised. The patient is the reason for this career; if the needs of the patient are being unmet or violated then the purpose of our occupation will be unsuccessful and
If the health of employees can help or hinder a company, then why do companies still have sick days? With the “on the go” lifestyles, how can we not question the health of employees and their families. Today we have high stress jobs, rush hour traffic, and demanding schedules. Being healthy and fit is the way to conquer tomorrow.
Data and information are integrated into each step of the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. ("Nursing Excellence." Nursing Informatics 101. Web. 19 Nov. 2014.) Following this process, nursing informatics personnel can organize and set each file and record accordingly based on the care process. Since health care providers communicate primarily through the notes they write in a patient’s chart, nurse informaticists seek to continually improve the speed, timeliness and accuracy of patient charting. Working with the accurate information is key to nurses in all fields of the spectrum. It is beneficial to the health care providers that information is precise and up-to-date so the care will be more than sufficient. When health workers have access to more up-to-date, complete patient notes, they can make better decisions about a patient’s care and use the appropriate resources to better help the quality of the patient’s care doctors can
